I see that ESPN will be broadcasting the game between Cook's Chaminade College Prep and Oak Hill Academy on Thursday night at 6:30. The game will also feature two of the top recruits in the country (both signed to Duke) in Harry Giles at Oak Hill and Jayson Tatum at Chaminade.

That will be worth watching! And I believe you meant three of the country's top recruits - Tyler Cook, and a couple of others.

Story from his first game...

Senior post Tyler Cook showed an immense amount of power as he banged home five dunks including a right-handed windmill in the first quarter that nearly brought the house down and stretched the iron to its limits.

“I want to take a rim with me to college,” Cook said with a smile. “That's a goal.”

He finished with 14 points.

Gonna be fun. Here is the link to the article with more quotes from Cook plus pictures.

Sounds like he has a little bit of Reggie Evans in him

Cook represents the physical play and rebounding that have been missing at Iowa for years. With Cook, a year on Wagner and Hutton, and some contributions from Kriener and Pemsl, this will be a totally different type of team next year- PHYSICAL!

What a fun night! Tyler Cook vs Andrew Fleming's former team Oak Hill Academy. :p:D

"Immense" and "power" are certainly good words to read about any Hawkeye. If Cook starts at 5, a real possibility, and Wagner at 4 our opponent's are going to face a trash compactor inside.

Cook's a 5? I always thought he was a 4. 6'8" is a relatively short 5 in the BIG.

I don't think he'll play the 5 exclusively. I think Kriener will be our primary center, but wouldn't be surprised to see lineups with Cook at the 5. Iowa won't have that prototypical 7' type of center for the near future. But, between Kriener, Pemsl, Uhl, Cook, Wagner (throw Baer into the mix as well) in the front court, and generally speaking a pretty tall and athletic back court as well I think we should be OK.

Wagner has spent time at the 5 this year and he's 6'7". Some sites list Cook at 6'9". Cook's explosiveness around the rim will have him on the floor no matter where he lines up. I wouldn't expect Kriener to see significant minutes next year with Cook, Wagner, Uhl, Jones, Baer, and Pemsl in the mix at the forward positions.

I forgot about Jones; many apologies Sahib.

I think you're right that Cook will see the floor no matter what his 'position' is called. It's difficult for a man of my chronological age to realize traditional positions on the basketball court are not what they used to be. You're rarely seeing the classic: back to the basket center, power forward, small forward, shooting guard, point guard lineup anymore. The positions just kind of meld together.

Cook is going to be special. Pending moss and huttons development, this team is primed to be great in 2017. Starting lineup. Williams (Jr.) PG
moss (So.) SG Dom (Sr.) SF Wagner (Jr.) Cook (So) C. First off the bench Hutton as the change of pace nasty defense. Then Ellingson and Fleming as your call upon sharp shooters. Not sure of Bear yet, know he's a hustle guy but the talent coming in my take his minutes. Pemsl and krenier spot minutes to help out post. Bohanon back up PG. that's an 11 man rotation. But I bet someone transfers out. If Fleming doesn't get more minutes next year he may leave.

I think Cook is about the same height as Nick Ward, who I believe MSU recruited as a C/PF. However, I think Fran would like to play him at PF as he develops. I've heard he's working on his shooting and that will get him more PF minutes. Since Kriener and Pemsl have outside games, it will allow him more free range inside too.

I'm not too worried about Fleming at this point. Fran claims to be comfortable with him, so it is probably just working on getting acclimated to the pace difference even between high school at Oak Hill and at the D1 level. Plus, when MG and AC are gone, guard minute will open up quite a bit. I think it is safe to say that we'll have moments where we rely on two of Fleming, Brady, and probably even Bohannon (we'll have to see if he RS or not) to bring the ball up next year while Williams needs a breather.

I like thinking about the level of recruits coming in, and I hope we continue to see our recruits outperform their HS rankings (although that will be more difficult with higher rated guys).

I agree that PG is our least secure position for 2016. Concerning other positions, the competition will work itself out and the cream of our 3* recruits will rise to the surface. Although we don't have talent coming in in bulk like MSU, we're getting at least one 4* a year for the foreseeable future. I can't remember the last time Iowa had an incoming player with the physicality and athleticism of Cook. So in short, we are doing more with less even as we're slowly getting more.

They do list Ward and Cook at about the same size, just never thought of Cook as a 5. Does he play center on his high school team?

I've been watching the game and have been pretty impressed with Cook so far. Only 4 points (2/2 at the line, and hit a nice fadeaway jumper), and has made every shot he's attempted (Through one quarter). Hasn't shown too much on the boards, but the area he has impressed me in particular has been his facilitating. Tatum is obviously the go-to guy on the team, but Cook gets the ball quite a bit and doesn't seem to feel any pressure to make any big plays happen. Just makes smart decisions with the ball and had a nice find to a teammate in the corner for an open three.

Only through one quarter, but so far, I like what I see in terms of style of play.

We're getting bigger through some lucky growth. Uhl looks closer to 6'10" than 6'9", assuming Ute is really 6'9". Also heard that Kreiner is still growing and is also around 6'10". Let's see how those guys grow and fill out.

Has 3 fouls with 3:14 left in the second quarter so I'd imagine he's done for the half. On my count, he has 4 points, 3 boards, and probably a couple assists (although he could have a few more if his teammates would finish/make shots), a turnover.

I think he could be a little more aggressive with the ball, as Chaminade is struggling to get anything going offensively, and Tatum isn't having a great game. Only has taken 2 shots and is 1/2 (not including the shot he was fouled on)

Also, unsurprisingly, all the announcers have done is hype up Jayson Tatum. Cook getting very little attention

Kreiner has really slimmed down. Looks like he has actually lost some weight and he is moving much better. Looks quicker and a little more explosive. He had like 5 dunks the other night, granted the team he was playing didnt have anyone ovee 6'2" guarding him.

You can't judge much from the competition that Kreiner will be playing up in northwest Iowa. There is really no D-1 talent that he will be matching up against.

Cook fouled out with 6 points. Not his best game I'm sure, but he made few mistakes and the team was clearly better both offensively and defensively with him on the court

I tuned in late and only saw fouls and missed free throws. Didn't seem like he touched the ball much from what I saw.

It is hard to judge Cook based on this game. He didn't get the ball much and looked to play solid team ball. On the other side, he wasn't as aggressive offensively or going after rebounds as I would like to have seen.

Watched for over a quarter and I don't think Cook took a single shot and perhaps had only a couple of rebounds. What are his offensive strengths - down on the block or shots from the outside?

I put a frozen burrito inside a microwave. I turned that on and put it all in a second microwave and turned that on. Then I put the whole thing in a huge microwave and turned that on.

It was a burrito to begin with and just like that I could tell it wasn't a burrito anymore!

Apparently, High School BB officiating is just as bad as college officiating...
I don't know how the refs for prep games normally are, but I'd love it if the HS officials I see around here were even remotely as consistent as college refs.
