U of I Professor Thinks Herky Looks Too Mean

Vendors across the street from Kinnick hope this story remains active till next week.

Hard hitting press by Torbee.
That's what most the press/online crap is any more. One of six billion people in the world says something stupid, and someone "reports" it. And you know why? Because people get worked up about it and write two pages of comments on the subject.

A stupid comment by one person does not mean anything more than someone said something stupid. Proper thing to do is to ignore it and move on.

I like to bring it up every now and then. See what kind of noobs are on the board.

Hah sorry, I thought about it after you posted that I might be ruining your bait but I was laughing too hard in remembrance to not respond

The deeper issue is that there are students going into debt to take a class with her.

I did a quick scan of the board and didn't see this posted anywhere. So my bad if I missed it. Apparently this professor thinks Herky looks to mean and promotes "Aggression and Violence." Article written by ol Torbs.

The professor is correct, but I'd go several giant steps further. I'd dump the hawk as our mascot. Hawks represent agression, they prey on the weak, their talons grip, draw blood and their beak is designed to tear/rip flesh.........My recommendation........go with the...........

Definitely a stupid remark to make on Herky. Dr. Oral would probably be well served by going out to a small town Iowa dive, rubbing some elbows, having a beer, and eating a pork tenderloin. A lot of the professors at the UI, in fact, would be wise to do this to get an idea of the people of Iowa.

That being said, this isn't a liberal political issue. And Dr Oral works with many abused children and testifies in court on a regular basis as an expert on this abuse. So yeah, she does earn every penny of her salary.

This professor more than likely wrote a text book which is not being bought. Way to get her name out.

Playing devils advocate, who says she earns every penny on her salary? Sure, advocating against child abuse is a noble cause, but that doesn't mean she's any good at it. With comments like the one she made about Herky makes me question her intelligence and sense of judgement.

Honest question, do you know more about her professional life? Are you familiar with her work and if she's any good at her job?

Good grief. Sure doesn't take much to get peoples' panties in a bunch around here. It's hard to top some of the totally callous ignorance in this thread. It's really striking how easy it is for idiots to post spiteful things anonymously about other people they don't know. Whether giving Herky a different expression for certain non-athletic purposes is a good idea or not, I don't know. It's only an idea, after all, and if we all became afraid to suggest ideas that might not win a popularity contest, there wouldn't be any ideas at all.

Professor:
What I see here is political correctness invading competitive sports.
I found that competitive sports was fun and important to my health, but more importantly, my involvement in sports taught me about fairness and how to abide by rules, helped me develop personal relationships and nurture many friendships. Competitive sports taught me to respect others, taught me that I had to work hard to achieve my goals, how to win and more importantly how to lose. It is my opinion, changing the facial expression of Herky, our mascot logo, is not going to achieve any of those things that I just described.
I understand you are a university professor and I commend you for reaching that level of your profession.
I too have had university-level academic positions as an Instructor, Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, and was a Department Head with a tenured professorship. It is my opinion that political correctness is a combination of one's political and personal beliefs. How the athletic team's logis is designed and is expressed is solely within the administrative responsibility of the Department of Athletics, not to be influenced by your political beliefs or personal opinions.
