UCLA Will Be Difficult For Iowa To Beat

MSU is going to be one of those that we look back on for a while and know that game would have been much different with Lee, Castro, and Sullivan in the game.
True, and since that MSU game the defense seems to be playing with a bit of an edge like they have something to prove. They were pretty feisty several times Saturday night, you could tell they were fired up.

Their record is not good because they played Indiana, LSU, Oregon, Penn state, and Minnesota in consecutive weeks.

A lot of decent teams might come out of that with 4 or 5 losses.
Yeah, I find it hard to believe anyone has played a tougher schedule. Road trips to Hawaii, Nebraska, LSU, PSU, Rutgers. Home games v. Current #1 and #8. Road tilts v. #6 and #14

They might actually stomp Iowa given the west coast ghosts.

Kirk is scared too. That’s why he is going to start the veteran McNamara
Not a chance that happens. First off, Cade has to get cleared, and even if he was cleared starting today, the prep already started on Sunday because of the Friday game time. So no way they are going to take Cade from being in concussion protocol to starting a Friday night game, on the road.

And even as stubborn as KF has been, he's not pulling a guy that's been responsible for 79 points in his last 7 quarters.

I watched UCLA/Nebraska last night and UCLA looked pretty good, especially the QB. But I do think Nebraska wore them down toward the end of the game but the game was in Nebraska, so... They have some very good athletes on both sides of the ball but tend to lack discipline which kept Nebraska in the game. Iowa will have to play well and physically beat them to win IMO.

Wisconsin's run defense is more than suspect, they were averaging 144 ypg giving up. UCLA has played a much more difficult schedule as well. They will load the box, and Iowa will have to throw the ball.
Everyone loads the box, most aren't successful.

I’m a fan of a team run by Kirk Ferentz for a quarter century. I’m a battered wife and prisoner of circumstance here, and I’m resigned to believing the worst is right around the corner with respect to his QB decisions. He’s going to do it again, I just feel it.

It wouldn't surprise me a whole lot, though.

Not exactly the point I’m trying to make. Merely that i hope we aren’t overlooking them due to their record, because it sure looks like they have the tools to beat us if we aren’t sharp.
Again, WE can overlook whom ever we want, But I'll guarantee you that the players and staff will not be overlooking the Bruins. Their last two wins will assure that we won't be taking them lightly....

But probably won't.

Upon further research, UCLA doesn't really have a bad loss on their schedule. The 4-point loss at home to Minnesota as probably their worst loss, and they were beating Minnesota 10-0 at half.

Otherwise, their other 4 losses have been against....

#1 Oregon
#6 Penn State
#8 Indiana
#14 LSU (17-17 at half)

They are probably pretty good against the run if they are 11th in nation in rushing defense considering they've played those 4 ranked teams plus Minnesota and Rutgers who also like to run.

We will need the Defense to play one of their best games of the year.

And the Offense needs to play solid and be opportunistic when the chances come.

the one upside of kirk’s propensity for qb malfeasance is that ucla will have to split their time prepping for 2 qbs…:)

Watching the Nebraska UCLA game their quarterback looked very good with a quick release, and their offensive coordinator is Eric Bienemy who did same with Kansas City Chiefs. A west coast trip is usually a disaster under Kirks regime
I have to agree. Most of the time Iowa seems to have a rough trip out west.

What UCLA is not good. Lost their whole roster, new coaching staff. Bunch of lightweights soft Cali players. Easy win despite KF's awful record vs Pac teams. Bienemy sent in plays Andy Reid told him. Indiana beat them by 40. It will not be a repeat of the Sparty blowout. Rarely bet anything but under with the Hawks but going big this week vs this soft weak west coast team.
The Hawks have hit the over in nearly every game this year, so if you've been betting the under you've lost $$$$.

UCLA is #92 in scoring defense. When looking at yardage stats, I'm wondering if they're sufficiently skewed that the Bruins really aren't so tough against the run. Maybe they're so bad against the pass that their opponents attack their weakness, or perhaps the opponents have primarily been pass-first teams. UCLA has faced the third fewest rushing attempts this season. It's also worth noting that some teams have had no trouble running the ball against them (e.g., Rutgers).

Yes, the Hawks should pass more this game, but not necessarily because they won't be able to run.

Hawks have played exactly one half of good football on the road so far this year. That’s it. Combine that with UCLA having a stout run defense and a record that doesn’t represent how they’ve played, I’m squarely in the camp that Iowa needs to play a squeaky clean game to get the win.

Granted, none of our road games had the benefit of Sully at QB - but we haven’t seen him play on the road yet either. He’ll need to protect the ball bigtime imo.

I’m optimistic - but very cautious.

Maybe. I don't like this matchup nearly as much as I liked Wisconsin. Unlike the Badgers, the UCLA defense is much stronger vs the run than the pass. They are susceptible through the air. I hope the Iowa staff recognizes this and is working on some wrinkles to open up the passing game, because that's where UCLA is vulnerable.
I am definitely sure the coaches are aware of this. The coaches will be working on some pass patterns for sure that can work against UCLA and maybe Sully can run enough to keep the ucla defense off balance.

We sure need a top effort from every player and coach just because of the short week and the travel as well as another nite game. On defense the hawks might be in CASH all game

I think hawks win by 7-10 because ucla has been called undisciplined.

If you dig deeper, UCLA’s rush defense is a little bit of fool’s gold. PSU was without Singleton and that was probably UCLA’s best effort against an actual rushing attack (top 40 in YPG/YPC). Otherwise, Rutgers and Oregon both ran it effectively, and neither of those rushing attacks are what I would call “dangerous”. The other teams on the schedule are using the run game mostly as a distraction (yes, even Minnesota).

If they hold us 0.5 yards per carry under our average, it will still be a long night for them. Lester might have to call some more QB run game to get them softened up, but that matchup will decide the game.

Before the season started I had this game tagged as the TRAP game and one of our two losses.

Fortunately, I've been wrong a lot this season when it comes to Iowa football.

I see from the game notes that Iowa is 2-7 all-time against UCLA. Because I attended both of the wins, maybe the team needs to get me to the game.

depends if cade starts and the defense that played in the MSU game shows up...........or should I say didn't show up

Bruins will throw the ball a lot,.. Should present opportunities for both them, and us...

What every team needs to do, every game. No turnovers and keep everything in front of you.
