A goat the size of a small deer was on the loose in the Coralville area Friday morning, according to a statement issued by the University of Iowa.

It is the second time a goat has been wandering the area in the past six months.

The goat escaped its carrier around 9 a.m. at the University of Iowa's Research Park. The animal, which is "in excellent health and poses no public health risk," made its way to Brown Deer Golf Course in northern Coralville late Friday morning, where it was last seen, according to the statement.

The goat is described as a white-and-cream-colored male that weighs about 125 pounds, and UI veterinarians say it might seek food in residential areas.

"The health and safety of animals used for research is of paramount importance and the university is investigating the cause of the incident to prevent it from happening again," the statement reads. "In compliance with federal regulations, the UI has reported the incident to funding agencies and appropriate regulatory bodies."

The incident Friday marks a second occurrence of a goat on the loose in the Iowa City area. In August, a goat was spotted on the west side of Iowa City and was eventually caught on Mormon Trek Boulevard.

University of Iowa Public Safety, the Coralville police, Coralville City Animal Control, members of the UI Office of Animal Resources and UI veterinarians responded immediately Friday morning to help search for the animal, according to the statement.

UI officials are encouraging anyone who spots the goat to call UI Public Safety at 319-335-5022.
