Ulis

Oh I agree, he didn’t make the decision on his own. My point is we have absolutely no idea what the guys behind him can do. We saw that the stage was too big for Bowen last year. Ulis was a big and physical pt guard, especially defensively. Pretty good rebounder. Bowen and Harding are barely 6 ft. Again, not dogging them as I think (and hope) they have potential. But at this pt that’s all we know. Would be nice to bring back an experienced pt guard. We know Fran doesn’t like pt guards that turn the ball over.
Bowen is 6'2, jesus the song short people have no right to live by you. just like white people have no right to play basketball.
to many bigots or racists on this board.

You have to assume Fran is optimistic about what he has.

Personally I see a lot of game in Bowens bag.

Hopefully Fran can keep his emotions about turnovers under control this year.

Yeah! We know dude! It's all you ever seem to talk about. That and stats that are these:
4 *'s
6' blah blah
1 rebounds
3*'s
Derp deep derpy derp
hey just trying to fit in on this board. its funny how posters like to bitch that Fran can't recruit or land top rated players,

hmm 4* players are top players to me. now we will see how they develop and if he can recruit more in the near future.

the 23 class is rated #28 by 247 the 22 class was rated #56
21 class was rated #69.
20 class rated #63
need I go on. considering the recruiting class rankings Fran either has a excellent eye for talent or is a excellent developer of the talent he does get.

Whatever. I just don't see any reason to always bring up people's race. You've been back for like a day and I've already seen you mention skin color in at least 3 of your posts.

Just my guess, but if the coaches wanted Ulis to be back next year he would have been, same with Toussaint the year before.

A rebuilding year getting all these young guards experience would actually be fine as long as the payoff results in something more than 0-1 in the tournament the following year.

That would be preferable to riding lesser talented experienced players to a few more wins and an invite but without the potential to do anything when you get there.
How dare you, the nerve!

I know he wasn't ready this year, but one thing I continue to recall is that Bowen was the guy Fran wanted in that recruiting class. He doesn't often get that first choice.

Oh? Really? Please share the actual reasons he left. Not fake conjecture please ... the actual reasons. Also, please cite your sources. Thanks.

I'm assuming he left because he's not good enough to play a significant role at Iowa.

He's basically a replacement level player at this level and his departure will have very little impact on the season Iowa has next year.

if Ulis has any type of success Fran will be crucified for not using him like he should have,

How should he have been used? He was used completely correctly based on his production.

I'm glad Ulis has moved on........I said before last season that he would never be the answer at PG. Decent defender, but not a good ball handler or passer/facilitator. Like you said, Bowen/Harding at least have potential to be good BT level PGs......where Ulis doesn't.

Again, he did play a significant role at Iowa last year as our starting pt guard, over 20 minutes a game. Actually very similar to the Touissant situation last year. Not going to argue that he wasn't used correctly. 39% field goal % from your starting pt guard isn't great. Only adding that this now only leaves Bowen who Fran totally lost confidence in and an incoming Freshman in Harding. Obviously Perk can play the point if needed but it's not his ideal position. Hoping for Bowen to make a big leap this year. Really like his potential.

I like Ulis. Seemed to be a good teammate and had flashes of being a good player. He simply had too many lapses or disappeared. Bowen and Dix have a lot more upside so it's a good thing that Ulis left, in my opinion. If Ulis would have stayed, Fran would have probably played him some minutes and Bowen and Dix wouldn't develop as quickly as I hope they will this season.

I think this year is a transition year. The fact we can get those guys experience will mean we'll be a good team in a year or two.

I agree with all of this. The bottom line is that Fran is still looking for that elusive point guard. All he knows is that Ulis wasn't it, and he never had any confidence that he was the guy. He didn't even start Ulis at the beginning of the year.

He (and everyone else) is hoping that Bowen is the guy, but that's really all it is. Hope. If you ranked Iowa's guards last year according to conference PER it would go;

Perkins 20
Cmac/Dix 13
Ulis 10
Bowen 4

These PER rankings pretty much confirm what we saw on the court and what we saw on the court was that Bowen wasn't anywhere close to ready either physically or mentally for B1G play. He needs to make huge strides just to be a passable point guard, let alone the floor leader everyone is hoping he can be. We haven't really seen a point guard develop to that extent under Fran. Hoping that this is the year it happens because hope is really all we have.

his 1st 2 seasons he was behind these
JBO, Tousant, Perkins and Connor who got very little playing time. he got very little time to adjust to a starting role.

even he needed time to adjust to playing with those playing on the floor with him. this past season the players were constantly getting limiting the time they could practice together.

when I look at this years 2 deep it sets up nicely for 1 on 1 practice.
PG 6'2 Bowen vs 6'0 Harding
SG 6'4 Perkins vs 6'5 DIX
SF 6'7 Sanfort vs 6'7 Sanfort
F 6'9 Pat vs 6'9 Krikke
C 6'11 Mulvey vs 6'11 Freeman

this is why the oversea trip will be so important to get a feel for can play at what position and more importantly who can play TOGETHER

Ulis is a good athlete, with decent size and strength. A solid defender but not much upside as he does not really wow with any aspect of his game. Is not a natural shooter, very stiff. Just not much upside. He could have more impact at a mid major, but is never going to be a 15 points per game type scorer.

As someone who grew up one town over from him, I wish him the best of luck. Get that degree.
