Confirmed douche. This is from the Chicago Tribune in regards to Ayo.

“Damn, I don’t know who’s any better,” Underwood said. “I know guys have more publicity and more marketing. But the numbers don’t lie and the productivity doesn’t lie and the winning doesn’t lie. I have no idea who in the hell anybody thinks is better than him right now.”

Of course a coach is going to pimp his own player like that. Does anyone really expect him to say “well, I guess it’s all wrapped up, let’s congratulate Luka Garza on a memorable season”?

He knows full well Ayo is still a big underdog to Luka for the Naismith. He may be a douche for taking veiled jabs as Luka, but he’d be an even bigger douche to concede at this point.

There’s a more tactful way to campaign for your player.

Who are the other players that have media notoriety?

Are you serious?

Jared Butler, Corey Kispert, Suggs, Timme, Mobley, Grimes...

Butler and Kispert have received a lot more pub than Dosunmu for POY.

Calling that statement a shot at Garza is really dishonest, in my opinion. It’s just not. Underwood has called Luka the best player in college basketball on more than one occasion this year.

Its the B10...these guys are coaches...they ain't PR masters. A coach better lobby for HIS ballplayers if and when he has a chance to....unless he doesn't want to recruit ballplayers in the future.
BTW......you don't think Ayo is deserving? He ain't the only B10 player deserving looks either....Liddell from tOSU is pretty sweet....what about UMichigan? And those teams are all ahead of Iowa in the standings......and then there might be a few players across the nation that are having great seasons......
If Garza wins "POY" he will deserve it......and there will be many out there who will cry "Foul!" Its the nature of the beast.
Most importantly, Luka needs to finsih strong and Iowa needs to finish strong too. Go Hawks....

A coach promoting his own player? What an ass!!

Good God this topic makes Iowa fans look so pathetic. It's embarrassing.
It's probably because there's a lot of Illinois fans online lately pushing to get people to consider Ayo over Luka.....and then switching their tune, after Garza's last two games, to suggest it would only be fair to have co-B10 POY because it's just so hard to decide....................

That's probably why.

Btw, I guess I haven't paid enough attention to Illinois to know what these numbers that don't lie are that everyone is touting for Dosunmu.

I'm too busy not seeing his name leading the nation in any statistical categories.....

Is because he had two triple doubles? Or is it because he made some last-second shots?

Are those the NPOY-worthy numbers that don't lie?...........

Asking for the annoyed Iowa fans posting on here that roll their eyes at threads like this.

What's embarrassing is anybody on planet earth that thinks one fan base is different from any other, then actually has the nerve to hit Post Reply when they put it in writing.

Making shots in a one or two minute span is evidently more important to a lot of people than making shots at a historic rate over a 40 minute span. Big Ten rankings be damned, it’s a guard’s game so of course they get the advantage, yet Luka is by far the best at his position and also more valuable to his (top 10) team than any other player in the country.

While I understand the PTSD from Toppin last year, Hawk fans shouldn’t even be entertaining this conversation until things go sideways when the awards are handed out

He’s turned the ball over 19 times the last 4 games. Pretty exciting stuff.

Current odds on BetUS

Garza -2200
Ayo +450

This has dropped from last week which was Garza -3500 and Ayo +1000

Underwood just doing what a good coach should do. If the Hawks take it on the chin this week, fall to 20th in the rankings, Luka struggles against Liddell and Dickinson while the Illini continue to roll with Ayo continuing to put up solid numbers, the odds are Dosunmu will win B10 player of the year. Garza should still win national player of the year as he deserves it and the pundits have touted him from day one. Butler is probably the guy that Luka has to worry about for NPOY. But 2 losses this week and Wisconsin won’t be a cake walk so if the Hawks have a Franesque end of the year collapse Luka may be on the outside looking in on both awards unfortunately.

After Dosunmu's late game big shots in win over N'Western and then his Triple Double all the talk was Ayo this Ayo that and yet he didn't get voted BigTen Player of the Week.... that went to Luka :)

I think that's pretty telling
They gave it to Luka largely in recognition of his history making performance.

Not exactly a shot at Luka.

Well he says or implies his guy is better because the competition (which is really only Garza) is a product of better marketing (not substance) and plays on a team that isn't as good as the Illini.
Sounds like good locker room stuff for Iowa

I wouldn't consider it douchey...but Underwood is a douche...and I don't care for Ayo much either. Bring it on. Iowa probably folds to end the season, but there is always
a chance they make statement wins and instead the Illini fold and Ayo has a few crap games. Not like Ayo is a pure shooter.

First of all Brad Underwood is a douchebag, but he’s doing what any coach would do to tout his player. The National pundits are just trying to stir
up some noise. They know Ayo’a not going to beat Garza for Big or National player of the year.
Garza shut them up this past week and will continue to shut them up!
I’m looking forward to Illinois/MSU tonight. I can promise you Izzo has told his players to make him go left!

Who cares what Illini fans think/say? If Garza plays well and Iowa does well in the tournament he wins. If he doesn't play well and Iowa stumbles he probably doesn't. What Illinois fans think has as much bearing on the outcome as what Iowa fans think which is none whatsoever.

Luka Garza is focused on beating Michigan and Ohio St
as the Big 10 Season winds down. Then there is the hope
of making it to the Final Four in the NCAA Tournament.
Garza himself has said that this season is about winning
games rather than winning awards.

Oh yeah? Well........

what Iowa fans think > what Illinois fans think

That'll learn 'em.
