Underwood Takes Shot At Garza

Are you serious?

Jared Butler, Corey Kispert, Suggs, Timme, Mobley, Grimes...

Butler and Kispert have received a lot more pub than Dosunmu for POY.

Calling that statement a shot at Garza is really dishonest, in my opinion. It’s just not. Underwood has called Luka the best player in college basketball on more than one occasion this year.

Illini are trying to get Ayo for Big10 poy....so kispert, timme, mobley, etc are not in the equation....it is Ayo vs Garza.

Other than the fact they play different positions, the deal breaker for me is Garza gets double and triple teamed every single possession of every single game. He is THE focal point in the entire Big Ten.

Seriously, who is the last Big Ten player to demand that type of attention on the Defensive end? I imagine there have been some, but not sure who it would be, and some of those guys were surely more athletic than Luka where that kind of strategy might be a waste of a defender.

That HAS to count for something.

It's probably because there's a lot of Illinois fans online lately pushing to get people to consider Ayo over Luka.....and then switching their tune, after Garza's last two games, to suggest it would only be fair to have co-B10 POY because it's just so hard to decide....................

That's probably why.
Life is “so hard”....Sports POY really isn’t..... :)

If Luka plays well next two games (like 25 n 10 ish or more) I think it’s his award.

If he struggles or looks out of sorts, it’s going to give the pundits ammunition to start looking Ayo’s way. Just the way it goes.

And for the record, Ayo is a helllllll of a player. Like him or not.

Some current odds for NPOY:

Luka Garza (Iowa)-1733
Jared Butler (Baylor)+867
Ayo Dosunmu (Illinois)+1000
Corey Kispert (Gonzaga)+1967
Drew Timme (Gonzaga)+1967

Luka Garza-1400
Jared Butler+500
Corey Kispert+2200
Ayo Dosunmu+2400
Drew Timme+2400
For us non gamblers could you explain what those numbers mean? Sorry for the dumb question....

Let’s use the second example. If you wanted to win $100 on Garza, you’d have to bet $1400 in order to do so. In other words, he’s a heavy, heavy favorite. If Ayo won, and you bet $100 on him, you’d win $2400.

Btw, I guess I haven't paid enough attention to Illinois to know what these numbers that don't lie are that everyone is touting for Dosunmu.

I'm too busy not seeing his name leading the nation in any statistical categories.....

Is because he had two triple doubles? Or is it because he made some last-second shots?

Are those the NPOY-worthy numbers that don't lie?...........

Asking for the annoyed Iowa fans posting on here that roll their eyes at threads like this.

It's partly the media is trying to drum up competition for the award - Garza has been the frontrunner all season and hasn't had a bad stretch or missed games to threaten that status.

Meanwhile, Illinois has won 7 in a row, Ayo has two triple-doubles this season and is the clear 2nd place guy who could pass Luka if he stumbles at all down the stretch.

Confirmed douche. This is from the Chicago Tribune in regards to Ayo.

“Damn, I don’t know who’s any better,” Underwood said. “I know guys have more publicity and more marketing. But the numbers don’t lie and the productivity doesn’t lie and the winning doesn’t lie. I have no idea who in the hell anybody thinks is better than him right now.”
what do you expect him to say about one of his own players ?

I’m kinda curious what numbers besides assists does ayo have that’s better then Garza?
He doesn't. This is all created by the BIG media right now, wanting to add hype as the season winds down and we head toward the tourney. Just keep all these great teams and top players names out there to build more attention for the NCAA's best basketball league.

The thing that chaps me is the way he leaves Ayo in the game to score easy points near game-end to pad his numbers. Fran doesn't do that.

Got a steal and score with 2 seconds on the clock tonight. When his team was down by 12 points with no chance to win.

I am surprised that he didn't purposely miss so he could add another rebound, too.

Another 3 TOs in the first half for the aggressive Ayo. Hell he may get a quadruple double tonight.
Caitlin Clark had 34 points and 7 assists today against Maryland! But I suppose with your one track mind her 6 turnovers and 1.17 assist/turnover ratio were the more telling statistics!!!

Imagine this board if an Iowa starter had 23 tos over a 5 game stretch. Pure pandemonium. BTW....**** Ayo, **** Illinois, and **** whatever team you follow.

Huh? Sparty dribbled out the last 20-25 seconds of the game.

Weezy has 10 in the last 2 but I think the rest of his play has more than made up for some gaffes.

It’s pretty rich for Underwood to talk about numbers when he kept Ayo in so he could chase stats when Illinois was up 30 on Minnesota late in the game.

That’s what they get! Karma is a bitch. Keep losing. I hate that team more than any other team in the country.
