UNI took down #1 UNC...Will Iowa do it to MSU?

With UNI having beaten #1 UNC minus Marcus Paige, there would be some symmetry in Iowa beating #1 MSU without Denzel Valentine.

And if the Hawkeyes could manage it, that would be a pretty good deal for the state of Iowa to have two teams knock off #1 teams within weeks of each other.

It won't happen. MSU owns the Hawks and has for some time.

The B1G tourney game would be the anomaly. We got hosed in that one.

They, with the current No. 1 team and we, with a learning-how-not-to blow-the-game team does not bode well for us. It's not an impossibility. Just an improbability.

The one thing that would swing things to our favor would be to outshine them from 3. Very brightly outshine them.

We are 3 point favorites.

What's the anomoly? Sure the officiating hurt but we still blew it late. That is the exact opposite of an anomaly.

Tonight represents a great opportunity for Fran and this program to get the 800lb gorilla(MSU) off their back. They have certainly had our number and we've had a number of heartbreaking losses during the past few years where we were in great positions to win but couldn't finish them off. Whether folks want to point at officiating as an excuse or not, the fact is MSU sets the standard for toughness in this league and Iowa will have to really bring their best to walk away with a win. I just hope the officials are consistent tonight and don't allow themselves to be bullied by Izzo. Tonight will be a great barometer to determine if the officials are serious and willing to follow through with the new rules emphasis on restricting motion whether on the ball or not.

I wouldn't consider a win improbable as you suggested above...in fact this is the perfect timing to get the W with their best and most versatile player out with injury. I hope we attack the basket from the start as I don't think their frontline is that impressive beyond the freshman Davis(edit: it appears Shilling is back playing and he has had some good moments). I hope Sapp brings his best effort to date on the defensive end to contest their 3pt shooters, especially his old HS teammate Forbes.

A great challenge but huge opportunity awaits this evening, very excited to see how this team evolves during conference play. We should have the leadership and experience to handle the demanding schedule they face early in B1G play. Lets hope the Hawks get off to a great start tonight!

Go Hawks!

We got hosed in the tourney game. By the officials. When they contribute to the end result as opposed to us tripping over our own feet, it is a deviation from the norm.

And to make it perfectly clear, I do not want us to lose, nor do I hope we lose so I can say, "told you so!"

It's the best opportunity Iowa will have to beat a No. 1 team in hoops in some time. Might not be a better time in our lifetimes. Valentine has been the best player in college basketball by a longshot this year. I would still take the Spartans if forced to choose a winner, but hope I'm wrong.

But it would still be cool to have two different schools from IOWA knock off the nation's #1 team in the same season. Probably doesn't happen very often in any state. ;)

Iowa got hosed against them 3 years ago in Carver as well in the final minutes. Iowa should have won that night even without Marble. So many close calls against Michigan State in the last few years with no victories to show for it. I think that ends tonight with Iowa winning by 5-10.

And ISU likely plays the new #1 on Sat.

I was wrong. And right.

I said we wouldn't win, but also said that MSU's donination couldn't last forever.

Nothing like a good waffle.

If ISU played Oklahoma a few days later after the ratings come out for this week instead of Saturday, perhaps there could be three different Iowa teams beating a #1 team this year. Perhaps could still happen later in January against Oklahoma or Kansas.

When your PG is stuck with no where to go trying to get the ball in play, and then tries to throw it long to a teammate and it bounces off the MSU player into the hoop for a two...well, a night things might "work out."

When Uhl puts up a three from 35 and banks it off the glass for three...well, a night things might "work out."

Great to have it work out for Iowa's players, so often cursed by the "Magic" of MSU...

You nailed it revkev73. Two bizarre plays that have always gone against Iowa. When those things happened I started to believe it was, finally, Iowa's night.
