Will they get more than buck fifty in total offense saturday. I say no. If isu can't move the ball do ypou really think UNI will. Should be a lot of playing time for redshirts and let the vetrans rest up. Hope mansell gets a quarter just to see what he's got

I'm still curious who they'll have as their starting QB. Dunne had such a bad game against Montana that they pulled him and they put in Howell instead. Not unlike Iowa, UNI's top receiving option appears to be a tight end.

UNI's run D was pretty tight against Montana. However, I doubt Montana is a power team like the Hawks ... so it poses a very different sort of match-up for the Panther D. Given how much attention UNI's LBs will have to pay to Iowa's TEs ... that might make it a little harder for them to come hard downhill against the run.

This offense couldn’t put 59 on West Dowling
LOL ... that may be true. However, UNI wasn't exactly lighting things up against a fellow FCS team. UNI seems like its O might be a little challenged ... and their facing off against a pretty good Iowa D. That suggests to me that Iowa's D could possibly help set up the O ... and that could lead to points (much like how the D set up the O against NIU too).

UNI's Colton Howell threw for 140 yards on 11 completions with a TD throw and a TD run... he also averaged over 7 yards per run.
UNI held Montana running backs to 19 yards on 13 carries
should be a good game.
remember 2009?

Yeah, I'm hoping the coaches are constantly reminding our players of what can happen. UNI in 2009, NDSU loss, David Johnson running all over us. Have to be smart.

Do we have the better athletes? Of course. But anything can happen.

Yep, Iowa is better than UNI and they were better in 09 when UNI beat Iowa.. don’t over look anyone! Don’t need some overlooked kid having a come out party like D Johnson did back then..

The Hawks have already seen a similarly "multiple" O versus NIU ... and NIU's Childers had comparable mobility.

Montana jumped out to a 26-0 lead ... and then held on for dear life to secure the win. Colton Howell had some success ... but he was still barely over 50% in terms of completion percentage. When UNI had their strong game against Iowa ... Pat Grace was their QB ... and they had more weapons on O that year.

The bigger knock on the Hawks that year was that the UNI game was the first game of the season. Thus, not only did they NOT have any film on UNI ... but, more importantly, the Hawks had a number of primary starters out for the game (Calloway and Vandervelde were out). Furthermore, it was the first game of the season ... and Iowa as only playing O'Meara and ARob at RB at that juncture of the season (we hadn't yet pulled Wegher's redshirt).

If you look at the situation heading into the current UNI game ... the scenario looks quite different. The Hawks have a lot more tape to self-scout upon. Iowa's regular starters on the OL have re-integrated back onto the starting lineup. The Hawks have a full game of tape to scout as it relates to UNI's run-D. And lastly, UNI's current passing game isn't nearly as talented as it was in '09.

I doubt it. UNI is probably an average FCS team this year. Iowa has been very underwhelming on offense, and another sluggish start is probably to be expected, but I figure this will be a game that could potentially cure what ails the O.

Iowa - 40
UNI - 7
I see it being more like 38-10 ... where a score is given up in garbage-time.

18-23 year old kids. They're going to be excited about a night game against the badgers (just like us). Hoping for a solid win in a perfect spot for the KF "September turd."

That's a fair point. However, Ferentz is also trying to sell the guys on the UNI team being an opportunity for them to really try to make some strides in improving. Given how the O has been looking ... there is definitely ample opportunity for the O to make improvement. The O definitely is not a unit that can really feel good about themselves ... so they MUST know that Kirk is correct about them needing to continue to work on improving.

It IS possible that the D could get a little cocky and overlook UNI ... however, given our leaders on the DL ... I'm inclined to believe that that won't be as likely of an outcome. I think that the D is having a lot of fun ... and they want to keep on improving ... and keep on having an opportunity to rush that passer. That only happens if they do their respective jobs.

I don't think the Hawkeyes are going to look past a night game this week for a night game next week.

These late nights are killing me old ass.

But this place at night is worth it!!!! :D

I'm so tired I can't even persuade the little neighbor girls to come over.

After ISU game and right before night game (just announced) @ Wisconsin......about as Trappy as you can get
It depends .... if the Hawks realize that they're not currently good enough to beat Wisconsin ... then maybe they'll put in the requisite work to improve. If they put in the work to improve through the UNI week ... then they're giving themselves a chance to be competitive against Wisconsin.

If the Hawks mail in things during UNI week ... just expecting to coast ... then I agree with you that they'll be grossly mistaken. While I won't lie ... I do believe that UNI is well-outclassed in this match-up ... if you ever disrespect your opponent ... then they have a legit chance to surprise you. It's when you're on your heals ... that is when THEY have the advantage!

Unless they are clinical narcissists, I think our players on offense know they have a lot of work. ;)

UNI will not put up more than 10 points against this Iowa front seven (outside of garbage time). Iowa gets on track.

My prediction...Iowa comes out with a game plan that has a focus on getting Stanley back in tune. Meaning, Iowa comes out knowing UNI is going to be sending the house early and often so they will exploit the open zones via the pass. In a perfect world, Iowa uses the pass to build a three score lead before shifting focus to the run game which gets Iowa up somewhere in the 35 point range. Then, while staying healthy, they allow the backups a full quarter to get experience. Again, that scenario is the perfect scenario in my opinion.

I was thinking same thing- lets get our passing game clicking early and often

If you really start breaking down UNI, you start appreciating the sort of prep that they're going to force on the Hawks:
  • Their O is pretty multiple - so it will give a lot of looks for the Hawk D to diagnose. This is good as it relates to continuing to build the collective football IQ of the group.
  • Their D is awful solid against the run. Montana was averaging just a little over 2 yards per carry. A run D doesn't accomplish that unless they're a pretty darn solid group. Thus, Iowa is not going to be able to run the ball "for free."
  • A lot of guys on the UNI roster were guys who likely wanted to become Hawks ... but didn't get the offer from the Hawks. Thus, UNI always comes to the game against the Hawks with a nice old chip on their shoulders. It's always a nice test when the opposing team is out gunning for ya.
So while I still think that the Hawks will win ... I also think that the Panthers are going to force the Hawks to become a better team ... and that is exactly the thing you want for a team that is of a developmental nature!

You're right.

But at the same time, if you're Brian Ferentz, don't you have to be thinking something along the lines of, "Gee, we have kinda looked like shit so far this season. Maybe Saturday we could be a little more...offensive?" and then hang 60 on UNI?

I really dont envision the hawks opening up the playbook any further until Wisconsin. Even against Wisconsin we may stick with the run based on BF's prior comments about abandoning it last year was a mistake.
