UNI

It depends .... if the Hawks realize that they're not currently good enough to beat Wisconsin ... then maybe they'll put in the requisite work to improve. If they put in the work to improve through the UNI week ... then they're giving themselves a chance to be competitive against Wisconsin.

If the Hawks mail in things during UNI week ... just expecting to coast ... then I agree with you that they'll be grossly mistaken. While I won't lie ... I do believe that UNI is well-outclassed in this match-up ... if you ever disrespect your opponent ... then they have a legit chance to surprise you. It's when you're on your heals ... that is when THEY have the advantage!
The Hawks and the coaches are in a no win situation this week. If we shut down UNI's offense then this forum will be all over them for being over confident coming into the Wisc. game. And if we allow 10 points or more than they'll be bitching we're not that good and Wisc. will kick some as-.
Again, a no win situation??? Always 5 negative posts to 1 positive post...

This game does have trap written all over it. Between Iowa State and Wisconsin, UNI had a bye last week, and UNI in general thinks they are on the same level as Iowa and Iowa State.

That said I think Iowa will win it pretty easily. It being a third game helps Iowa immensely. UNI is not the team that they have been in past years. It being in that game also helps Iowa. Seems a lot of these upsets by FCS teams happen on early starts.

Not at all .... what the outside world says about the program is of little consequence. What matters ... and it's really the ONLY thing that matters ... is that the Hawks use the UNI game as an opportunity to improve. If the Hawks learn and improve from each of the first 3 games ... then it gives us a fighting chance against Wisconsin.

However, the Hawks have to put up a good week of prep this week first ... and then execute a good game next. Then we can really start worrying about Wisconsin and perception ....

Yeah it would not surprise me to see UNI be more successful on offense against Iowa than was Iowa State. Big thing to watch for me is whether or not the Iowa offense can get in any rhythm. If it is 7-3 Iowa at halftime, it's Danger Will Robinson time as it relates to the ability to beat Wisconsin.

What will be critical is cleaning up a lot of those drive-killing penalties. Also, shoring up some of the drops ... and having Nate be a little more loose ... and throwing better balls. And most importantly ... having the guys continue to run-block better.

I've been pleasantly surprised with the pass-blocking ... but again, I think that that has been continuing to be a point of emphasis for the unit. My guess is that they've been extensively prepped in order to be ready to face the pressure that they'll be seeing from both Wisconsin and Penn State ... with the hope that they'll be able to give Nate an adequate amount of time in the pocket to do some damage.

However, other aspects of our blocking game need to continue to improve.

Farley has ruined UNI football chasing Moby Dick (dual threat QB).

I will be happy when he retires.

Whenever Iowa plays UNI I always wonder if the MSU board would be cautiously optimistic if they were hosting Maine this weekend. Or if Wisconsin fans would be worried that hosting Wofford could be a trap game.

You're right.

But at the same time, if you're Brian Ferentz, don't you have to be thinking something along the lines of, "Gee, we have kinda looked like shit so far this season. Maybe Saturday we could be a little more...offensive?" and then hang 60 on UNI?

It took Tim Dwight and Tavian Banks, two of the most prolific skill players Iowa has ever had, to hang 60+ on UNI. The current corps of skill players don’t belong on the same field as Dwight and Banks.

There is truth here, but Wofford and Maine aren't loaded with in-state, walk-on/preferred walk on talents (who believe they could have been a Josey Jewell if given a late hour scholarship)...seeing a prime time national TV opportunity to shine that they have never had before, and they'll never get again...to knock off the team that didn't take them. They have a historical level of success beating ISU and should have won in Kinnick within recent memory - no matter how you may want to dismiss it. Many players are lifelong Hawk fans with the full motive to show out. Arguably two of the best - if not the two best - NFL players from the state's universities are UNI grads. Is it not at least conceivable that they would "self-sabotage" their offense - including sitting a starting quarterback - to preserve a game plan to oust the Hawks before a national audience? How many more of these battles does Farley have before retirement? This is a golden opportunity for them unlike any other, and they have been planning for months to take advantage.

While I do not worry or predict an upset, with all due respect to anyone not seeing the danger here and the difference between this game and the others, you may not only fail to understand in-state rivalry and the nature of Iowa football in the 21st century but sport in general.

There is truth in what you say as well. But I still contend that the chances of all it making a difference should be one in a hundred. Tradition, financial resources, P5 affilation, & 22 more players on full ride should stack the deck. Thats just my opinion.

No question. You are correct. But, there are a litany of examples to the contrary in every sport at every level. You gotta show up.

I'd like to bet, after the UNI game there will be more negative post about our play than positive posts, win or lose:rolleyes:

It's called hyperbole.

I was talking about the mindset.

This, plus it was UNI's first game with a new coach, as well as a new QB.

Very true.

If the Iowa defense plays like they did the first 2 games, we'll be fine. :)
Certainly not claiming we will lose by all means- I am confident we will win and am also confident our offense will come out looking to "click" and score points. Just was simply pointing out by definition this is in fact a "trap" game. The game right in between two huge rivalry games- one in state and the other between two teams trying to rep. the west in the championship game.

I'm totally sure MSU's board was fully confident when they played Utah State & Penn State played Appy State 2 weeks ago. Both almost got beat.
