University of Albany Great Danes

We should not be playing any team ever where the very first reaction is “do they even have a football team??”

Then we have UNI in the following year again, I believe.

I’m all for a few patsy games per year - but FCS schools and Albany is pretty rough ….
If you think that's rough, you should see some of the schedules teams played prior to the 1950s.................................

This isn’t uncommon.

Nebraska plays something called Houston Christian University next season.

In the now pro football era of what was formerly college football, although they count on the record games like this are the equivalent of preseason tune ups.

I figured they just booked this team so that Fran would have a free ride on their charter plane back to Albany when they send his ass back to Siena....

Yeah because no team in the SEC plays any FCS teams, right? Oh wait.....

I have no problem playing an FCS team when we're playing a non-con against a team that just played in the Big 12 championship, and conference games against both teams that played in the Big 10 championship.

You're not helping yourself as a coach or a program when your "pre-season" games are 2 jokes and a program that almost everyone on this board describes as a G5 school.
And I would take your SEC comment seriously if it wasn't for the fact that you and every other _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ says that the IOWA WAY is morally superior to every other school and conference.
Ya can't have it both ways.

Point me to where I've ever said that (hint: You can't). Until then, you're just making shit up to support your dumb narrative. Again, a large % of teams play FCS. Most teams in the SEC play FCS in the middle of the season, and they only play 8 conference games, not 9. So if you can point me to another team that is playing 3 conference championship participants in 2024 that isn't playing an FCS team, I'll listen. Until then, yeah, I'm cool with it.

My narrative is that winners like to play winners.

The top athletes in the world don't hone their skills against weaklings.

Q) What does Iowa get when it plays an FCS school from the Dakotas ????

A) A loss

Sorry, that doesn't impress star football players, nor does it entertain the people in the seats.

Didn’t Iowa just beat a Dakota school a few years ago??

Like you said this is not "a new thing" SEC teams have games like this. East coast teams like Rutgers play Howard all the time. We are all just too close to Iowa having teams like this on the schedule. We used to play Drake some years as well......

I just looked up this highly competitive rivalry between Drake and Iowa in football. From a Fandom website I found the last time Iowa played Drake was 1985. That is 40 years ago so your statement is hazy at best.

Prior to that the game was in 1941. I didnt think Iowa played Drake very much in modern day history.

I would say there are several reasons for playing these lower level teams, 1) it is hard to find teams to schedule sometimes especially when another team drops it scheduled game agaisnt you 2) you want an easier team usually for that very first game as you want to start positive and get video of your issues and 3) it was good to play N Iowa for instance to keep the money in the state and help their program which also goes for N Illinois etc

Yet those mighty Georgia Bulldogs don't like to play a lot of winners in their non-conference schedule. This season they played Tennessee Tech and UMass. Last year they played UT-Martin, Ball State, and UAB. In 2022 they played Samford and Kent State.

While I'd like to see Iowa play one quality non-conference opponent every season along with Iowa State, the upgrade in the B1G and playing 9 conference games (one more than the SEC) makes it unlikely to happen. If the B1G were to resume playing 8 conference games then it would be a must.
