The University of Iowa Department of Public Safety is looking for a man they say was recording video of women showering in a residence hall.

According to a UI news release, an officer responded to Burge Hall around 10:24 p.m. Monday for a complaint of a person videotaping a student while she was showing in the women’s shower room. The incident happened around 9 p.m. and ended when the woman confronted the man and he fled the shower room. The man did not make any contact with the woman, police said.

While an officer was at Burge, he received information about suspicious activity in a women’s bathroom in Burge. Police said the officer found a man hiding in a bathroom stall. A fight ensued between the officer and the suspect, who eventually escaped, police said.

Officers canvassed the neighborhood and determined there was no immediate or imminent threat to campus.

The university is now changing all of the mechanical locks on the shower doors in Burge. Residents are asked to report suspicious activity to Resident Assistants or the police and be on the lookout for strangers in the residence hall.

Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call UI police at 335-5022.

And they actually operated on cellular waves.

I still have my very first cell phone. It was a bag phone with an antenna that I had to plug into my cig lighter in the car.
Air time was about a dollar a minute. It was a miracle if you could complete a conversation without the call getting dropped. And every call started with "Guess where I'm calling you from..."

The thrill of my Burge existence was when a pretty girl from Georgia did a strip tease in front of her window, but only down to her undies.
Also, when a roommate got in trouble for projecting cartoons off a neighboring dorm.

Risky move for the officer to fight with the suspect. I guessing the suspect already had has loaded, cocked, and ready to fire gun in hand.

University of Iowa police have arrested a man suspected of videotaping a female student while she was showering Monday.

In a news release sent Tuesday morning, police said they received a report Monday of a person videotaping a female student who was showering in Burge Hall, on North Clinton Street. The incident occurred at about 9 p.m., the release said. The woman confronted the man and left the room, police said.

When an officer arrived at the residence hall, he was told of suspicious activity in a women's restroom and found the suspect hiding in a stall. Police said a fight ensued and the suspect was able to flee the building.

According to police, after canvassing the area officers determined there was no immediate threat to campus. The university will be changing all mechanical locks on shower doors in Burge Hall, the release stated, and residents were encouraged to report suspicious activity.

On Tuesday evening, UI released an image of the suspect and asked for the public's help identifying him. Later that night, officials sent another release saying they had located the man and taken him into custody. Charges are pending and the university will release the suspect's name when they are final, officials said.

This is the fifth report of sexual misconduct the university has informed the public of in recent weeks. The others were reported to have occurred on Jan. 24 and 30 and Feb. 6 and 7.

An Iowa City man faces numerous charges for breaking into a Burge Hall dorm room and recording a woman showering in a restroom.

According to University of Iowa Department of Public Safety criminal complaints, 23-year-old Robert L. Hightower faces charges of invasion of privacy, third-degree burglary, assault on persons in certain occupations, criminal trespass, simple assault, interference with official acts and third-degree harassment. Hightower, who lives on East Jefferson Street, is not a student or affiliated with the university in any way, according to the UI Department of Strategic Communication.

Police said Hightower admitted to entering a fifth floor room in Burge sometime between Feb. 14 and 15. Hightower allegedly told police he had walked around the residence hall until he found a door that was cracked open. When he didn’t see anyone in the room, Hightower walked in and found a card wallet and a key ring, he told police. Hightower found a key for the women’s restroom and took it off the key ring, police said.

At some point on the evening of Feb. 15, Hightower returned to the residence hall. Police said Hightower admitted to entering the restroom on the fifth floor around 9 p.m. and recorded at least one woman showering. Hightower showed police video clips, one of which showed a woman showering. A second video showed a woman drying off. Police said the woman’s naked body was visible in each video.

The second clip ends as the woman catches Hightower in the act and yells at him, police said.

Police said Hightower admitted to going barefoot in the shower because he didn’t want to get his shoes wet. The victim in the case told police the suspect who recorded her was barefoot, according to the criminal complaint.

An officer responded to a complaint about the incident in the shower around 10:24 a.m. Monday. While the officer was at Burge, they received information about suspicious activity in a women’s restroom in Burge. The officer responded to the restroom and found Hightower hiding in a stall, police said.

Hightower allegedly rushed the officer and pushed past them. Hightower escaped after kicking and struggling with the officer, police said.

UI police said Tuesday night they located Hightower, but it is not clear how he was found. Hightower has since been arrested.

Third-degree burglary is a Class D felony punishable by up to five years in prison. Assault on persons in certain occupations and invasion of privacy are both serious misdemeanors punishable by up to one year in jail. Criminal trespass, simple assault, interference with official acts and third-degree harassment are all simple misdemeanors punishable by up to 30 days in jail.

Hightower also faces two charges from Coralville police for an incident alleged to have occurred in December. An officer was called to Target on December 3 after Hightower was spotted taking cell phone photos of a woman in a dressing room without her permission. He was also banned from entering the store until November 2016 due to a prior shoplifting charge. He faces charges of trespass and peeping in that case.
