The University of Iowa's president has apologized to one offended employee for saying publicly that instructors who aren't ready to teach their classes should be shot.

Bruce Harreld wrote in an email to librarian Lisa Gardinier that his statement to the UI Staff Council was "an unfortunate off-the-cuff remark." He says he didn't mean to offend anyone or imply that he supports gun violence in any form.

Harreld writes that he's used the comment in many forums previously without drawing a complaint.

Gardinier says Harreld's remark came during the Dec. 9 meeting, in response to a staffer's question about instruction. Gardinier told Harreld the remark was "irresponsible and unprofessional." She later welcomed his apology, saying she understood his remark to be rhetorical.

Gardinier shared the correspondence with The Associated Press.

Oh gawd. Herreld likely will not recover from this.

Statues are getting torn down and buildings being renamed on college campuses for less.

When do the hunger strikes start?

I am coming to like this guy more and more.

Instructors should be subject to the same standards as anyone else who draws a paycheck.

This would include in many cases being (metaphorically) shot.

.................................

The girl professor is probably someone who sees micro-aggression everywhere. Now that she has been empowered, expect to hear more from her.

He can survive but he will need to take anger management and have all his decisions approved by the faculty and student senate.

My God what a dumb thing to say. He is a president of a university and we are in a gun culture run amok. Not smart and it makes me wonder who we are hiring for these important jobs?

I think any "librarian" who is offended by this harmless comment and then goes to the Associated Press ... "should be shot"

Seriously ... People are looking for any excuse to try to bring him down as President.

Was it a smart comment to make? Of course not. That being said, our PC society is becoming laughable. Someone gets offended and they immediately think the world should know about it so they take to social media, etc. And because "they" are offended then they believe you should be offended as well.

Holy cow, what's happening to our society ...

Trump will make America great again, and put these offended malcontents in their place.

People who thought this was a credible threat should be shot

I'd be careful if I was that lady since she'll probably be marked as a target by him. People in power usually get there for a reason.

It's not the end of the world that he said it, but it's too bad people are calling her out for running to the Associated Press like she's the guilty one. What should she do when the main boss at the college is the one that is guilty? Go to him?

I seriously doubt Harreld is going to keep her name on a post-it note on his desk just waiting for the right moment to relieve her of her duties.

The man was almost certainly joking......

But I'm sure the Iowa faculty will now think they work in an "unsafe" environment.....

I always wondered how Garfield could say things like who ever invented Monday's should be drug out into the street and shot. That cat was such a gun nut.

That's what people say about racism. Small actions can lead to bad cultural behavior and it's just not smart to suggest people should be shot.

Can you be more specific about what you're referring to when you talk about racism and bad cultural behavior? As in, which comments (or, action, as you call it) have led to what type of cultural behavior? Then can you please juxtapose those thoughts with this situation? Just so we can all see your argument laid out?

There was no action. It was a comment. Not even a real suggestion.

How is he guilty of anything here? And people aren't calling her out for being guilty, they're calling her out for being stupid.

For the love of God I hope you're just playing devils advocate.
I doubt it. I think he's probably a current student. Or she. Wouldn't want to be guilty of a microagression. Girls can be called Trevor. I'm a guy and I have what's considered a girl's name.

Having apologized for using an “insensitive” shooting metaphor, the president of the University of Iowa said he now wants to set the record straight on what he actually said during a recent UI Staff Council meeting.

“During a discussion with our Staff Council I responded to a question about improving graduate student teaching by commenting that ‘I have learned the (hard) way that if I ever walk into a classroom without a teaching plan, I should be shot,’” UI President Bruce Harreld wrote late Tuesday in an email to the Press-Citizen.

The email came in response to an Associated Press story citing an email conversation between Harreld and Lisa Gardinier, a UI librarian and member of the UI Staff Council. In that exchange, Gardinier took Harreld to task for "(claiming) that there was 'one way' to prepare lessons and any instructor who goes into a class without having done so 'should be shot.'"

The email exchange has since been made available to multiple media outlets.

"Clearly using the word 'shot' in today's environment is insensitive and I apologize," Harreld said in his email. "However, I never said 'teachers should be shot.'"

Harreld said he called Gardinier on Tuesday afternoon to discuss what had actually been said, and “she quickly agreed with what I said and agreed that I never said ‘teachers should be shot.’ … I then repeated again what I said and she agreed that I did said ‘I should be shot.’”

Harreld also included an follow-up email he sent Gardinier later Tuesday.

"I believe there is meaningful difference between 'I should be shot' and 'teachers should be shot,'" Harreld wrote to Gardinier. "I am more than willing to be held accountable for I did say but not for what I didn't say. Your (sic) were honorable enough to agree in today's call to corroborate what I said and quickly agreed that the reporting has been inaccurate. Would you please be willing to speak with reporter to correct this error?"

When contacted Tuesday night, Gardinier said she had agreed with Harreld during their phone conversation, but upon further reflection, she “no longer trusts either his or my memory on whether he said ‘I’ or ‘they’ (teachers).”

As a librarian for Latin American and Iberian Studies, Gardinier is classified as a professional and scientific staff member with a continuing appointment.

"It's not sure not tenure," Gardinier said of her job status, "but it is somewhat protective."

Sam Van Horne, the UI staff member who asked the initial question, told the Press-Citizen earlier Tuesday that he had been startled by the “should be shot” comment in Harreld’s answer. But he was more interested in the substance of Harreld’s comments about investing more resources in the training of graduate instructors.

Gardinier said, from her perspective, the president is making a distinction without a difference. The implication of the president’s "should be shot" comment, she said, was meant to apply to anyone in a similar situation — even if initially directed at himself.

No video or audio recording of the meeting exists, according to the council.

In response to Harreld's comments, critics on campus have scheduled a protest march for noon Thursday. The marchers will travel from the Old Capitol Town Centre to Harreld's office in Jessup Hall.

The Associated Press reported last week that Harreld had hired Eileen Wixted, a crisis communications consultant, to help improve his public communications skills. Harreld, a former IBM executive, is paying for the training out of his own pocket.

...

This is so incredibly lame and stupid that I might even show up tomorrow and counter protest these idiots. (Only I am not sure if I will have enough time between now and then to puncture my own face with obnoxious jewelry and/or color my hair orange so I can look the part of a protester.) What a bunch of whiny little b_____es. First of all, there was nothing to see here. His "offensive" quote was a simple figure of speech that has been used by millions of people, millions of times.

Second of all, the original story was very inaccurately reported as it now turns out. So double the stupidity for trying to make this an issue.

Now...despite all of that, some folks are apparently going to form a protest march. Good grief, what a bunch of maroons! I don't think the organizers of the anti-Harreld protests realize that they are undermining any support they might receive from non-UI employed people regarding Harreld's hire, etc.

Thank you! You just saved me 20 minutes to gather my thoughts about the protestors. Well said!
