The US will win gold anyway, but the gals on the US Olympic team were served notice last night that they're not all that. The WNBA team handled the US Olympic stars with relative ease. If those teams played a seven-game series, the WNBA team would win at least four. That group is simply better. And that's despite an exhausted Caitlin Clark failing to hit a single three-point shot, although she did hand out a rookie record 10 assists, short by one of the all-time all-star record.
So while the US Olympic team waltzes to gold over a bunch of overmatched opponents, the WNBA team can take solace in knowing they're better. And even more important, CC can FINALLY get some rest. And when the threes start dropping again when the season resumes, look out.
CC has been playing under a microscope virtually nonstop since way back last October. Every game she's played since has been to a packed house, if you don't count the Kinnick Stadium exhibition that only drew about 56,000. She's the constant target of everyone, everywhere, all the time, yet she's handled the entire fiasco with nothing but grace and humility. CC is making everyone associated with the WNBA rich and famous beyond their wildest dreams, and many hate her for it. But she keeps shrugging it off and playing ball. And despite what she's already accomplished, this league ain't seen nothin' yet.
And so the US Olympic team knows they're second best in their own country, but at least they'll always have Paris.
