USA Today Football ranking

Cyclones probably will be higher in the next one. This came out when people thought they lost a draft choice WR.

Who are the key players coming back? Or is this ranking based on MC's track record.

There should be a constitutional amendment that outlaws any ranking (other than fun for media and fans) before week 3 or 4.

22. Iowa State

How I picture Eyewejun reacting to this...

Nice to be recognized, but 100% meaningless on May 2nd.

If (big IF) they are ranked in early October, I will pay attention.

At least if ISU is ranked, going into the Iowa game, and Iowa wins, the hawkeyes won’t lose votes or fall in the rankings, which has happened to them previously, after a win over ISU.
So if you win, does that mean it was your super bowl?

1. I'm as impressed with May rankings as I should be, which means NOT AT ALL. Just posted in this thread to make a little joke about Lazard getting bypassed in the draft.

2. Offense: The top two quarterbacks, top two tight ends and top four running backs are coming back. Butler is back at one WR spot and Deshaunte Jones, who played a lot, at another. Two other experienced WR are back. There are guys with starting experience at all spots in the OL, but that's still the area on offense that concerns me most.

3. Defense: Lima is an outstanding DL and Johnson had some excellent games. Two of the three starting linebackers return. The corners who started the Liberty Bowl return. Safety is a question.

This is the time of the year to be optimistic, and I am, cautiously so. But Campbell's teams have not started strong, and the early schedule is very challenging. The first seven games comprise Iowa, Oklahoma, TCU, Oklahoma State and West Virginia, three of them on the road, as well as home games with Akron and South Dakota State..

Yikes, glad this years game is in Kinnick.

James Daniels was drafted in the 2nd round and was tabbed by most to be a 1st round pick ... however, based on contributions on the field and leadership, I still would tag Sean Welsh as Iowa's best O-lineman in 2017. How much a player meant to his college team rarely gets reflected by the draft.

Back in 2008, Iowa's best player on the team was Shonn Greene ... but the guy who meant the most to the team just might have been Mitch King. Again, one guy (Greene) was drafted ... and the other (King) was not.

Of course, you're right ... early season rankings are based on perception ... and most folks don't know crap.

QB got his 6th year so he is back, but he has a lot of film on him now and arm strength is questionable. Don't believe he is a run threat either.

Their D line will be a strength. O line may be more of a question with lesser experience at tackle and center. They lost Campos at tackle.

RB is a strength. Pretty powerful back.

Supposedly good receivers, although the most experienced one back is the dude that dropped the pass in OT against Iowa that had them settle for their FG in OT.

Damn! I didn't know they had Cyclone fans working at USA today. I guess, in the end, they get to look as stupid as the Cyclone fans in my office.

May or September, Coaches or sportswriters, from the responses on this thread its a hard pill to swallow. No wonder Iowa fans want them off their schedule

For the record, he'd have been short of the first down if he'd held onto the ball, but definitely should have caught it. And he's the same guy who caught the 74-yard TD pass late in the fourth quarter that should have been the ball game.

Actually, the way-too-early rating is meaningless when it comes to ISU's progress. What IS NOT meaningless is -- as somebody pointed out on the CR board -- with all the highlight vidieos of Mayfield when he was the top choice, none were against Iowa State.

I’m glad you are proud that for once you weren’t on the wrong end of a highlight reel. Big accomplishment there.

I think its important to note, the reason for the ranking is simple - for national media that only do a high level overview, they see a team that upset 2 top 5 teams last year, a weak Big 12, and an up and coming coach who is presumed to be treating this essentially as a contract year to leave ISU.

When you look at the actual roster though, Iowa State quickly falls apart. They have no outstanding lineman and the group will be towards the bottom of the Big 12. Quarterback is a very weak position for them too. Combine that with ISU’s historical depth as a team and a tough early schedule, you have a recipe for the disappointment team of the year.

It is your analysis that is weak. All of your credibility is lost when you mention the QB position at ISU. Your mention of historical depth sinks you as well. Don't give up your day job. How good do you think the Iowa QB is?
