Anybody else think that Uthoff posting up down low and running the offense through him at the elbow of the free throw line should be worth 20 points. With Davidson's lack of size he could do some damage in there not to mention he is a pretty good free throw shooter. I am confident Iowa can win but getting out of the gate quickly on offense will be the key. I believe Gabe and Woody can combine for about 17-20 rebounds....that is if... Davidson is missing some 3's. Should be a fun one.

I think if ever there is a time for Woody to man up and take a giant step forward in his game/confidence/career etc...it's this game. Davidson is built to win from the perimeter both offensively and defensively. Woody and Gabe are the 2 straws that stir the Hawks drink in this first game. I hope Woody comes out with his hair on fire.

Same game plan as Maryland. Same game plan as Nebraska. Same game plan as Indiana.

The NCAA Selection Committee gave us a great matchup.

I have a strong feeling that Iowa's fortunes for this game will be decided on the other end of the court - on defense.

If Uthoff can disrupt a few 3PT FGAs that would be worth 3-4 baskets on the other end. Clemmons, Jok, Gesell, and Oglesby need to make the Davidson perimeter their battlefront. Defend well there and everything will be fine IMO. If Davidson is hitting 40-50% 3PT shots I'm afraid the Hawkeyes are in trouble.

Make a concerted effort to get the ball inside, and don't settle for early midrange jumpers. Uthoff can get his shot off whenever he wants, so he needs to wait for a good one.

Not a big Woody hater but Woody has the ball blocked and taken from him by guys that are a full foot shorter than him. If he goes up with the ball above his shoulders he will be fine but if he continues to bring the ball up from his hips it wont matter if a 6'9" guy is on him or a 6'2" guy.

Last year against Tennessee and their bruisers, Woody was about the only one who showed heart and played well. I really think woody could go for 20 and 10 n friday.

I thought this was going to be a thread about Uhtoff saying he'd never heard of Davidson

Please not Woody... the offense needs to run through White and Uthoff. Woody needs to be scrappy and grab weak side boards and stay out of foul trouble.

White and Gabe's FT will be the ultimate difference and I too think they gave us a good first matchup. We just need better perimeter defense than we usually have.

Disagree, Woody likes to bang down low. He is absolutely terrible vs. smaller/quicker teams. He brings the ball down to his waist all the time and can't get shots off.

This is the exact type of match-up that I want to see Gabe for 25 minutes. Aaron, Gabe and Uthoff should absolutely exploit their lack of size.

I'm not hating on Woodbury either, we'll need him in the worst way if we win and want any chance vs. Gonzaga. It's just not his match-up but I'd be thrilled to be wrong.

I'm with GT Hawk. Woody does better against true 5-men. He struggles with quickness regardless of their size.

Uthoff, White, and Gabe give us size and athleticism to close out on shooters defensively. White and Gabe should press the rim constantly on offense and should rack up fouls. We should also get a ton of offensive rebounds.

That's how we win the game. Run at shooters with our length, run off missed shots, and attack the rim at every opportunity.

Agree.
If davidson is hitting from 3, it could be a long day for the Hawks.

I expect at least four 3 - pointers from about 3 ft beyond NBA range to go in, with another two more coming late in the game just because that's how this bullsh** works against Iowa.

And no, those 6 threes won't be the only ones they make because bau...

I agree. Throw UM in there as well. Extend the zone, let bigs rim protect and make them shoot over our length then hammer them inside.

I also agree this is a good matchup, and White, Utoff, and Gabe are key at the rim and with free throws. I am kind of surprised the national media sees it more unfavorable......

If they can prevent dribble penetration we win, it's pretty much that simple.

if they can't the games up for grabs.

The problem with this is that it's generally been difficult to post Uthoff because Whit and the 5 man prevent him from having enough space to operate in the lane.

With White shooting the jump shot better it could become a more viable option.

Not a big fan of trying to find Woody for shots, but he can be a pretty effective passer from the free throw line area. Uthoff, White, and Gabe need to take advantage around the basket. Really is the same game plan as we played very well against the B1G teams that lack a true center.

Easier to shoot layups and free throws in a new environment than threes. Advantage Hawks.

What I like about our matchups is really the size of their 4 guards they play. 2 guys at 6'4" and the other 2 at 6' and 5'11. If they pack it in, and they will, they have very little length coming out on shooters allowing Jok and JU easy looks. I like the matchup.

???

You think a guy like Woodbury is going to be able to guard anyone on a team who spreads it around, is quicker at the 5 position, and can shoot it? Wrong. If Iowa wants to go big, it can do so sufficiently with guys who are tremendously more athletic like Olaseni and White. I see Woodbury getting 5 boards and 4 fouls in 15 minutes.
