Thanks for the update. I had always thought that Uthoff had a great chance to break through with his all-round skills. Unless he has bulked up a lot, I don't see how he could be a center.

I have never been able to figure out Uthoff + NBA. I thought he was great for the Mavs, but they dealt him pretty quickly, even though he played fairly well. I actually think he has a very relevant skillset for the league with his length + shooting + shot blocking. He is certainly not the quickest guy, but for his height and wingspan, he moves OK. Maybe he should just squeeze what he can out of some time in Europe.

I was traveling in Australia quite a few years ago and stayed at the house of a friend-of-a-friend for a night. The Aussie owner of the house asked where in the states I was from. When I told him I was from Iowa, he said, “Oh, you must know about Jason Reese then!” Being a basketball nerd, I did know about UNI’s all-time leading scorer.

He proceeded to tell me about how beloved players like Jason Reese and former Hawkeye Steve Carfino were in Oz and how so many foreign players who came to play Down Under ended up liking it so much that they moved there after their playing career was over.

So yeah, I could see playing in Australia being a pretty great gig.

I was at UNI when Reese and the Panthers upset Missouri in the 1st round of the NCAA tournament. That was a really fun team to watch. VERY MUCH alcohol was consumed in Cedar Falls that day.
And the winning shot was made by..........? Weren't they both from....? which isnt heard from much in sports nowadays.

Maurice Newby. I was in 6th grade and we got to watch it in the school lunchroom. I had Missouri going to the Final Four, so it busted my bracket.

I was talking with one of the players from that team a few years ago and he said they had recently had a team reunion and Newby was one of the only ones that didn't come back and nobody really knew where he was.

*edit - looks like he is an assistant coach at WVU Potomac State College now.

I remember exactly where i was at watching that game. I also remember where i was when UNI kind of got the shaft in their next game against Minnesota.
UNI actually under achieved that year. Only 6-6 in Mid Continent that year. Conference tournament was played at UNI. Ice storm the night of conference championship game.

Great comments about one of the great basketball memories in the history of the state of Iowa hoops that we all should cherish (David vs Goliath kind of thing). I too remember exactly where I was when that game and that sweet shot from Maurice occurred. Jason Reese was an absolute bull in that game. Troy M, Dale Turner, Steve Phyfe (current player Austin Phyfe's father, many others).

One of my great memories of the NCAA tournament.

I read an article from the great Eldon Miller (who really put UNI hoops on the map) where he said the plan was to have Dale Turner (the PG) to create and either take it to the rack or kick it out to an open option.

The Newby shot was totally a 3rd - 4th option but he nailed it.

UNI dominated that game until a late charge by MO. And yes, UNI really should have won that MN game but let it slip away.
