Uthoff had chances to be picked last night but turned them down

I have to tip my cap to Niang & Nader. I did not think Niang would be drafted but I did think JU would in the second. I did not see the drafting of Nader coming. In hindsight you can kind of see why taking a flyer on Nader makes sense. He's long and athletic. Can drive and shoot it from 3. He could become a very good defender and role player at the next level with hard work and a chance.

Still hope JU gets a shot. He's a pretty darn good player but so were a lot of other guys not drafted. Just shows how hard it is to make it to the pros.

trying to save face for his client. it is total bs

I really don't think so. Apparently this is becoming more and more common for late 2nd round picks to test free agency instead of agree to be a draft-and-stash player. Being a draft-and-stash player, especially when you are already 22 years old, gives you an extremely small chance of ever playing in the NBA. Going the free agent route probably slightly increases your chances because you can find a team that you fill a need for and then compete in summer league to try to actually get on the official roster.

The "trend" really isn't entirely new. Basically, past about picks 40-45, you're probably better off taking a shot as a free agent. Teams will contact agents to gauge where a prospective player stands on being drafted with certain agreements/restrictions in place. Teams not needing immediate help or wanting a longer eval. of a player who may wind up helping said team, or who may wind up as a decent asset in the future use these picks as organizational builders basically. The trade off to being drafted with a shot at a roster spot is that these teams hold rights for up to 3 years if the player never makes the NBA roster. In some cases, teams contact players/agents urging them not to take a draft and stash deal because they'll promise an immediate signing; these teams really like the player, but don't have the picks to take them. The Spurs did this with Arcidiacano and the Rockets with Payton. I have no idea which teams or how many contacted Uthoff, but I'm sure he had late interest. His best bet is to effectively try-out well in summer league.

Red is it true yogi did same thing as uthoff and turned down late pick as a stash pick in Europe or d league so he could sign with nets. Swear I read it on cbs sports or somewhere can't find it anymore. Anyways if true smart decision cause I think yogi can make their roster.

I'm not sure Yogi had as high a draft interest as Uthoff, but I did read where the Nets were high on him and vice versa. The Nets only have one Pt. Guard under contract I believe. I think Troy Williams' camp is saying he was contacted about being drafted and stashed as well, but turned them down. Personally, I see Yogi and Uthoff finding a home, but not Williams yet.

Don't believe it BUT it frankly works out better for him potentially. I really never expected him to go in the first two rounds.
I am a Celtic fan and Nadar will be in D league. Only thing Celtics did right in this draft was trading two picks for a future 1st round.

When it comes to FA's, they are always trying to find the best fit to make a roster. Certainly possible that Uthoff held out but he worked out for 17 teams and not one of them though he was good enough to make their team.
Or teams wanted to draft players who they could stash in Europe or the D League which Uthoff didn't want so he said don't draft me. Not hard to understand.

I'm shocked that a bunch of jerk clowns showed up to spew their crap, a g a I n.

Even if Uthoff or any undrafted player is signed after doing well in summer league it doesn't guarantee they won't spend most or all of their year in the D League. Teams have up to 20 players on their summer league roster and if a very veteran team most of them will not be on that current team roster. Most of those teams don't even have openings because players hang on for so many years. It's to bad there isn't a limit on number of years for players to play, maybe more than college but to give others a chance.

Even the president's years are limited.

That's not a good idea.

Agreed, I'm tried of watching LeBron in the playoffs every year, been there done that. Get him out of there. It's Uthoff's time now.

Drafted in 2nd round is better than not being drafted but both are long shots at getting a contract. I don't completely buy that JU turned down offers to be drafted but if they were contingent on being stashed away it makes more sense.

And it's never as simple as not being good enough to make their team. The Celtics don't think Nader is good enough to make their team but still drafted him.
It looks like Niang will have a much better shot at making the Pacers, than an average 2nd rounder. He was the Pacers only Draft pick and Bird really likes his game. The other ISU draftee will be fortunate to ever lace them up for an NBA regular season game.

Even in the NFL I would rather be an undrafted FA who can dictate the team/roster/style of play I sign with rather than being drafted by a team in the final round.

I'm glad my job doesn't have a time limit. Are you stupid or trolling? NBA teams aren't required to retain these older guys.

I didn't say teams were required to retain the older guys but teams often sign older players to long contracts late in their careers and then often times the players start getting injured and no more than hold a bench seat warm or supposedly serving as a mentor for the few young players that do get drafted. not allowing many new players to enter each year. I guess the NBA teams are the stupid ones.

but teams often sign older players to long contracts late in their careers

Are you serious? Please provide evidence of this prevalence of older players signing long contracts with NBA teams.

No offense, but WTF are you talking about? Older players get dumped all the time to make room for up and coming young players. Is it Happy Hour already? Wow.
