The family should offer to help pay for the expenses of the investigation.
Everyone involved in all of the crimes committed that night should be charged. I think it's bogus to say you won't just to clear the air.
I had some weird feelings on this one right from the start. I think I commented on the beating the kid took, but to me it just didn't seem like Iowa CIty to see a gang of guys jump out of an alley in a racial assault. The timing of it and that it wasn't immediately divulged what Owens was doing that night gave me pause. Late at night outside a bar usually means a alcohol and testosterone were flowing. There was no immediate claim that Owens was walking home from the library minding his own business when the racially inspired assault took place. So, it seemed like a false claim was a possibility.

It's completely bogus to not file at least a false report charge here. Although perhaps the powers that be figured that Janet Lyness would bungle the prosecution and this was the best outcome that they could muster. I think the ICPD could be setting themselves up with a bad precedent here.

The guy is black, not going to happen. Don't you know there is a disapportianate amount of black people getting arrested? Can't get them to stop committing crimes so we need to stop arresting them to keep the numbers down. I am sure this case will serve as a huge deterrent the next time someone wants to file a bogus claim.

" Remember the guy with the BMW in Coralville, painted with swastikas and Ni**er scrawled on the side in black paint? Yeah, did it himself hoping for a new paint job.

Sjhhhhh.........black on white "hate crimes" happen far more often than white on black (not even close) and those get zero attention by the media.

Lyness would botch an attempt at a prosecution. That is a given.

Another good point...I change my initial opinion that he should have been minimally charged with making a false report to that he should ALSO be charged with public intox.
