He's looked really good at times, but he's noticeably not been breaking long runs this year. Daniels on the other hand has, despite them being called back. Is Wadley not at full speed?

He isn't being patient on some of the runs he has had where there were big gains to be had. last game there was on play in particular if he would have just waited there was a lane that opened up and he could have had a huge gain but instead he just tried to go outside the blocks and didn't really get anywhere. I think he is trying to press too much the last two games trying to make a play to spark the offense.

He's averaging 6.1 ypc on the season. I'd say that's pretty good. I still think he's do for a break-out game like NW last year.

Ran into a friend that lives in IC and is his neighbor. He told me that Wadley's knee was hurt before the first game. So, he's pretty much been playing on at least a tender knee all season if that is true.

Hard to be patient when the DL is 3yds into the backfield.

Our run blocking is actually pretty good, why we do not run the ball more often is beyond me! Wadley averaging 6 ypc and Daniels averages 5.4 ypc (that is with 150 yards called back on 2 carries.

I saw a stat where when the game was tied at 24-24 Iowa did not run the ball the rest of the game? Is that true? They passed the ball every time?

I know we are supposed to have this "pro QB" but it almost seems like GD is calling WAY too many pass plays. We have to run the ball at all times. It grinds the clock and keeps our defense off of the field. It still baffles me that we line up in 4 wide and shotgun when its 3rd down and 3 or 3rd and 2? Why? We do not run zone read or draw plays, so the defense already knows it a pass. So they just pin their ears back and tighten up the coverage and we get sacked every time.

Running the ball shortens the game but doesn't necessarily keep our defense off the field, picking up first downs does. I look back at the jNW game and see how easy it was for them to complete 5-8 yard passes, then look at how it was near-impossible for us to do. This has to be fixed.

If we're going to throw the ball it's obvious we need good 3 step drops and quick passes, or roll CJ out of the pocket nearly every time. There are so few passing plays where CJ has had time to throw, you would think that there would be adjustments to roll him away from the pressure. Besides, CJ is one of the best passers on the run, something Chuck Long has been saying for a long time - take advantage of your strengths while understanding your weaknesses.

Iowa is 110th in the nation for Offense (95th for rushing with 143.2 yds per game).

This is mainly due to the offense lacking any consistency in converting third downs, not being able to pass the ball, and the defense inability to get off the field which has resulted in Iowa running abnormally low offensive plays.

Look at how many running plays have actually been called. 169 is the number of attempts but that is counting Beathards sacks and kneel downs etc. The number of actual running back carries is I think 131 which is only about 26 carries a game. The 169 attempts puts Iowa about 90th in the country in attempts.
Daniels is averaging 14 carries a game with 5.4 ypc and Wadley 10 carries per game at 6.1 ypc.

As Chad Leistikow pointed out, in the second half from the time Iowa was up 24-14 to down 38-14 there were zero called running plays. They went 3 and out two times. Only 3 called runs. Pass, pass, sack. and pass pass sack.

They should be running the ball more when they have two backs averaging 5.4 and 6.1 ypc respectively.

Take Beathard out of the running stats and the take the team runs out, i.e. knees taken. and Iowa backs and receivers are averaging a combined 5.6 ypc.

The problem is not the running game or the run blocking. The only problem game was NDSU and that was because their best run blockers were injured. Daniels was averaging a respectable 4.2 ypc against NU and that is counting two one yard runs near the goal line. He had two carries in the 3rd quarter when they should have been trying to establish the run. Last week he was averaging 6 ypc and had only 13 carries.

They are 108th in total offensive plays called. and One of the worst in terms of time of possession as well.

Yeah that is true. Iowa went Inc. Pass, Inc. Pass, Sack, Punt and the next series Inc. pass, Inc. Pass, sack, punt.

The 3rd and short in shotgun drives me crazy. Especially because they have yet to run out of it.

Called zero runs in the 4th quarter I believe vs NW. This is on the coaches... nice to get a raise and then stink up the state.

Wow that is just shocking to believe. How can we have two of the "better RB's" in the conference and not use them in the 4th quarter?

I seriously wonder if they are trying too hard to get CJB his TD's. Just run the dang ball, hell run a reverse, run something other than shotgun 4 wide.

You have no clue what you are talking about, not even close.

Iowa had 21 plays in the 4thQ against Northwestern. 11 of the 22 plays (50%) were rushes.

Northwestern had possession of the ball to start the 4thQ and they scored to go ahead 38-24 with about 12:00 to play.

Iowa's first possession of the 4thQ: Iowa answered with a 9 play scoring drive (7 rushes, 2 passes) culminating in a Daniels rushing TD.

Iowa's 2nd drive of the 4thQ was 7 plays (4 rushes) ending with a QB sack and punt.

Iowa's last drive in the 4thQ started at about 2:00 remaining and down 7 points was 6 plays, all passes, ending with the INT.

You might want to get your facts straight before wildly criticizing the coaches.

Okay So I went back and whoever posted that stat must of been wrong.

Iowa did rush the ball in the 4th quarter. The glaring issue is right after NW scored this is our first series after they scored to go up 7pts.

yes I did and I was disgusted with our play calling. GD seems to panic whenever we lose yardage on any rushing play. I think he must be stuck in the glory days and thinks he has Vince Young back there. Guy needs to find an identity and stick with it. Stop with this current set up. Last year I even said it, he was very jeykll and hyde in his play calling.

Our run game is decent but our pass play-calling needs a complete overhaul. Yards per game is a misleading statistic. Teams like Oregon a few years ago who ran plays at superfast tempo would have more per game than those with slower tempos. Yards per play is more accurate.

This is a pretty good example of why the coaches will always be criticized for play calling no matter what is called.

Iowa calls a pass play on 2 and 11 trailing late in the 4thQ after loss on a run play on 1st down --- this poster is critical (criticizing Davis' pass play calls: "the second we fail to gain yardage, we need to throw the ball")

Two weeks prior against NDSU on 2nd and 12 and trailing late in the 4thQ after a 2 yard loss on a 1st down run play, Iowa again called a running play (what this poster demands) for minimal gain ---- the coaches should be fired!

I am more upset with the play calling when the game was TIED and then when NW went up by 7. Look at those two drives and that's your story of GD play calling. Both those drives Iowa did not attempt one rushing attempt (we were in NW territory on one of those drives). He comes out slinging w/mediocre WR's.

Sorry but GD has never had a "high-powered" offense here at Iowa. He has always been one of the "worst hires" in NCAA football. The only reason we were able to be some what successful last year was because our defense was so good. It helped out offense. GD is a horrible offensive coordinator. Here are our rankings of total offense since he has arrived at Iowa:

2016 Currently 99th behind (ISU, Ball State, Cent Mich, NIU, and Troy) This is very similar to our 4-8 season of 2012.
2015; 52nd (12-0 season)
2014: 60th (7-6 season)
2013: 78th (8-5 season)
2012: 116 (4-8 season)

This guy has not shown anything positive in his time at Iowa. If we are truly paying him a coach salary, he needs to get an offense in the top 25 at some point. We are not even sniffing the top 25 in terms of total offense. How can we not get close? GD is the reason and his style.

KOK:
2005: 24th in the nation (7-5 season)
2006: 30th in the nation (6-7 season)
2007: 110 in the nation (6-6 season)
2008: 48th in the nation (9-4 season)

So to say we have a good offensive coordinator now is a joke. KOK was much better and the results prove it.

My bad, that was the NDSU game where we were outgained 126 to -9 in the 4th. The past 3 games have looked so much the same they just blend together...

Look at some of his touchdown runs.... there have been a few where he's turned the corner. He's going the distance on those wherever they are on the field, they just happen to be from 5-10 yards instead of 80.

Our play calling seems befuddling at times. We rarely keep the defense guessing as to our offensive intent and at times we seem to be playing into our weakness (passing game) instead of leaning on what should be our strength (running game). I'm hopeful our D can find a way to shore up the run defense and that our O-line can start asserting themselves at the line of scrimmage and get our running game clicking consistently. If we don't find answers soon, this season's expectations will be lost.

Ran into a friend that lives in IC and is his neighbor. He told me that Wadley's knee was hurt before the first game. So, he's pretty much been playing on at least a tender knee all season if that is true.
Can you befriend Beathards neighbor, to get a quote from him (or her) to find out what is wrong with him?

If we are going to use your logic, then we need to run the ball on every down.

Guess what? That doesn't work.

If we are going to use your logic, then we need to run the ball on every down.

Well I wouldn't go that far, but why come out slinging the ball around when we have mediocre WR/TE's?? We started in plus territory and we throw the ball 3 times? Why not try and run it and see what happens? I mean first down at the opponents 39, try an off tackle play. I am pretty sure on those pass plays, there were not even fakes given to freeze the LBs.

I just hate how GD is a book and you can read him as can other teams defenses. Anytime Iowa is tied or behind he goes to his panic mode of passing. When the score was 24-24 we came out with great field position tried 3 passes and punted. NW went down and scored to go up 7. Now 31-24 we attempt 3 more passes, Punt and NW scored again to go up 38-24. Those two total drives took maybe 10 seconds off of the clock. The defense got ZERO rest and unfortunately it showed as NW drove right down the field and scored TWICE.

You're kind of moving the goalposts here Dav. If you can read GD like a book and we have excellent field position at the 39, wouldn't they be expecting something off tackle? Look, I get that you are frustrated. We all are. Iowa looks like a really bad team when they don't execute well, especially on the lines. They are not executing well right now and they are bad. Ferentz (not Davis) has run the same type of offense and defense, for the most part, for the whole of his coaching life. He is going to out-execute the other team. When that team does what it is supposed to, he's a fabulous coach. When it doesn't, he's a horrible coach.

One more thing. The term is would/should/could have, not would/could/should of. Sorry, just a pet peeve of mine.

I guess I am more frustrated that we are trying to pass the ball w/medicore WR/TEs. Our strength is our rushing attack and our RB's are our best "athletes" on the team, yet we are not using them.

Iowa is 12th in passing and 11th in rushing in the Big ten. That shows me that we have not decided what type of offense we are yet. Last year we were 11th passing and 7th rushing, so that means we were more run dominated last year. Why not stick with that? What has changed from last year to this year??? QB is the same, RB are basically the same (minus canzeri).

I am frustrated because our coaching staff seems to stupid to figure out that we need to find a brand and stick with it. Quit trying to be a pass first team, we do not have the WR/TE's to be able to do that. Yes CJB is probably the QB to come along since Stanzi, but he is throwing to inferior talent.

Dude. Iowa knows exactly who they are. They are not blocking for shit, so neither part of the game works. It's that simple. Same thing on the defensive side of the ball.

We rarely keep the defense guessing as to our offensive intent and at times we seem to be playing into our weakness (passing game) instead of leaning on what should be our strength (running game).

This is one of the most oblivious sentences I've ever read. We rarely keep the defense guessing, because we pass when its a weakness?

That is literally the definition to keeping the defense guessing. Everyone used to complain that GD was too predictable, but now they want us running the ball in every obvious running situation, unless its late in the NDSU game, then running the ball in an obvious running situation is obviously stupid.

Most fans are ****ing morons.

I was most frustrated with our defense in that Northwestern game. This was a Northwestern offense that had problems getting anything going on offense all year. I'm afraid we are going to see more of the same against the goofs. They will run it down our throat. Iowa used to be so stingy against the run.
