IOWA CITY, Iowa – Seth Wallace, who has served as recruiting coordinator for the University of Iowa football program for the past two years, has been named linebackers coach. The announcement was made Friday by head football coach Kirk Ferentz. Wallace fills the vacancy that was created when Jim Reid was named defensive coordinator at Boston College earlier this month.

“Seth has done a tremendous job in his role as our recruiting coordinator and defensive assistant,” said Ferentz. “Moving forward, Seth will serve as our linebackers coach and I am confident he will do a tremendous job in that role. We intend to fill our open coaching position sometime after signing day (Feb. 3).”

“I am excited to coach our linebackers as we begin preparations for 2016 and beyond,” said Wallace. “We have a great group returning who have been well coached by Coach Reid. I am very appreciative for this opportunity and look forward to this next phase of my career.”

Wallace served as Iowa’s recruiting coordinator in 2014 and 2015, while also coaching cornerbacks and nickelbacks in 2015 and working with the defensive line in 2014. Wallace returned to the Hawkeye coaching staff after serving as a graduate assistant coach for three seasons (2006-08).

The Hawkeyes last season posted a perfect 12-0 regular season record, winning the West Division of the Big Ten Conference. Iowa participated in the 2016 Rose Bowl following a last-minute loss to Michigan State (16-13) in the Big Ten title game. Junior cornerback Desmond King earned consensus All-America honors, while winning the Jim Thorpe Award being named the Tatum-Woodson Big Ten Defensive Back of the Year.

In 2014, Wallace assisted with an Iowa defense that ranked seventh in the nation in pass defense and 22nd in total defense. Iowa led the Big Ten and ranked second in the nation in fewest penalties and penalty yards. Senior tackles Carl Davis and Louis Trinca-Pasat, along with junior end Drew Ott were each named second team All-Big Ten.

Wallace returned to the Iowa staff from Valdosta State University, where he served as defensive coordinator from 2010-13. Wallace coached the Valdosta State defensive line in 2013 and the defensive backs from 2009-2012. He joined the Valdosta State staff after his three-year stint with the Iowa program.

In his 15 seasons coaching on the collegiate level, Wallace has served as both offensive and defensive coordinator, coached defensive backs, defensive line and wide receivers, along with holding special teams duties in 12 of the 15 seasons.

Wallace earned his bachelor’s degree in physical education from Coe College in 2001 and his master’s degree in sports management from Iowa in 2008. He and his wife, Erica, have a son, Landry, and a daughter, Maci.

Wow. Didn't see that move coming. Figured he would be looking for more experienced coach. Now would guess younger coach FRID recruiting coordinator and position assistant somewhere

He has coached for 15 years including time as a D coordinator. Maybe not P5 experience besides Iowa, but enough. How much experience were you expecting?

Gee, an unexpected coaching hire by KF. Huh. Go figure.

I like it. Sounds like Seth has been doing a good job and we could have lost him without a promotion. The recruiting coordinator position is one that will burn out even high energy guys rather quickly so we will probably see a new, young up and coming coach filling it every few years.

I like this move but it was not a complete surprise. Seth is a good young coach with a lot of defensive experience.

We still keep him here as an aggressive recruiter also. Will be interesting who Kirk brings in as recruiting coordinator.

Seth was a great recruiter obviously so this was a good move to keep him on board and the staff young

At first I was disappointed because it's obvious what a great job he has done in that role. Certainly stepped up Iowa's recruiting in nearly every way.

I think for the LB position this is great.

I don't know anything about Kelvin Bell but he seems to be the likely replacement.

Great idea to keep that position with young, energetic people. Kirk let that get stale with eric Johnson in that position way too long. Not a knock on EJ so much as acknowledging how tough that job is to stay on top and motivated.

Kirk seems to be pushing all the right buttons. Much of that (IMO) is coming from Jr's influence

Great move by Coach Ferentz. Promotion by performance. Seth Wallace has done a TERRIFIC job as recruiting coordinator. Now, he can help the New guy that's hired in keep the recruiting momentum going.

#goHawks !!! I love this move

With the returning LB cast of Josey Jewell, Ben Niemann, Bo Bowers, Aaron Mends, Jack Hockday, et al, I would probably be an ALL-BIG10 Assistant Coach, next year.
I knew I should have applied for that gig!

Call me crazy, but it would have been nice to see a former hawk with NFL pedigree get this job. Someone who could resonate with recruits and add a little "sexy" to the staff. Wallace seems to be a decent recruiting coordinator (let's face it, even after this rose bowl season, we are almost the only Big 10 team without a 4 star recruit committed), but his Coe college pedigree and his major strike out on all Georgia recruits (we offered like 40 of them this year) don't get me super excited for him to get a big promotion after 2 yrs on the job. He is being handed the keys to the mercedes, coaching up our stud LBs.

Which one of our NFL pedigree Hawkeyes wanted the linebacker coaching position?

Continuity in recruiting is the most important part of Iowa Football. Yes, it may be a burn-out position, but that can be alleviated by having two individuals placed there exclusively. One coach should be experienced and the other young and energetic. Every four years or so, the older coach moves out and younger one up.

Fwiw....The former Iowa player with a NFL linebacker pedigree-LeVar Woods- heads up Iowa's recruiting in Georgia...

The only thing that I worry about is a drop off in recruiting. He has been a pleasant surprise at recruiting coordinator and he has done a great job. He seems like a jack of all trades coach, so I'm sure he will be great as a LB coach. I just can't help but be concerned about recruiting.

I can definitely see them promoting Bell to recruiting coordinator. If that happens, I wonder if Binns steps in to fill Bell's role since his time will be up as a grad assistant.
