Was there an explanation why the refs let the clock run out at the end of the first half?

... right after Beathard threw an incomplete pass that left 13 seconds left on the clock?

Should have had one more play with the clock stopped at 13, but the clock suddenly jumped to 3 seconds from 13 seconds when ref came in from sideline, and then just wound down as if the Hawks had a running play on the prior play. Check your PVR recordings... It didn't make any sense when I first saw it at the bar, and less sense when I watched the replay at home then. Probably wouldn't have made a difference, but another person sitting next to me were debating whether Beathard would take a shot on a hail mary then with the score the way it was at the end of the half.

When Beathard threw the last pass he was about 3 yards beyond the line of scrimmage. The result is a loss of down and they advance he clock 10 seconds and start it running again. Iowa didn't try for another play, they just let the clock run out.

Added note: the ref said this rule applies when there is 1 min or less in the half.

We figured that out as we were watching on television, but the announcing crew totally ignored what was happening and continued to talk about something completely unrelated. They must have had something that by contract needed to be spoken before half-time. It was a little annoying.

I was happy, though, that we decided to throw the ball in that situation. That's another sign that the end of half approach has changed for good.

Something was off in Beathard's reactions yesterday after the early hit. He stood in the pocket and backfield far more than normal yesterday. Maybe he simply didn't want or couldn't move yesterday, but I wouldn't be surprised to hear that he had a concussion. He had plenty of time to throw the ball away yesterday, and this accounted for two or three of the sacks. His typical level of awareness would not result in him throwing the ball that far past the line of scrimmage, in my opinion.
