Academy Award Winner Broderick Crawford is a great example of a very good actor who happened to not be handsome. They say he had a problem with alcohol.
IIRC Highway Patrol ran on Saturday afternoons around supper time back in the early 60s when I was watching it.
(It was syndicated so stations could air it whenever they wanted.)

Crawford made a career out of playing bad guys and 'heavies' (no pun intended). It's always a hoot to watch these old crime shows like Perry Mason, Tales of the Highway Patrol, etc. where people had to find the nearest pay phone to communicate. I guess Officer Dan (Crawford) was privileged and had a pretty good car radio to speak to base or other cars.
