Watching Limp Dix Is Sad

Sad Henry Rollins GIF

Maybe he could grab a rebound or get to the line instead of just roaming the perimeter. There’s other ways to get involved instead of settling for jumpers all the time. This is what Fran allows though, so nothing will change.

Dix is good player---he's got nice touch and usually attempts to play good defense. I think OSU game plan was to play Dix and Sandfort tight and physical and Dix was finding trouble getting his shot off vs guys guarding him. The OSU players guarding Dix had a lot more muscle and athleticism and were playing tonight defense. He also got a few bad rolls on a tight rim that usually go in at Carver. The lack of rebounding is a legitimate complaint. He's 6'5, playing the 3 most of the time---he needs to be pulling ing 5-6 rebounds a game from that position in Fran's system which has a lot of opportunities..When the ball gets shot, it looks to me like a lot of the Hawks are standing flat footed and not even attempting to go for the rebound. When they do get to the ball, often gets ripped out of their hands.

This 2-game stretch shows why Dix is not yet a guy that can play professional B-ball. He needs to put on muscle and get tougher.

At this point Freeman, Dix, Traore are about the only solid B1G level players (with eligibility next year) on the team and signing them up for another year with enough NIL would be good start for next coach. Traore might not be eligible for NIL, so maybe only Freeman and Dix need to be paid. Thelwell deserves money if he gets another year. Koch probably worth some NIL--he hasn't played a lot but I think he had offer from Purdue, which is validation he's a solid player. Tadjo---he's least he has athleticism---would be nice to see him play more than Dimbele.

This a really a coaching problem pure and simple. Instead of guys crashing the boards when the ball goes up they all stop and stare or start leaking out towards the offensive end. Dix has the athleticism to pull down 5-6 boards per game. He's not being coached to do it.

The strength and conditioning program Fran runs is fvcking terrible.

Strength and conditioning . . . LOL

Yah, that'll turn Iowa basketball around. Lift more weights. Also invade Canada, Greenland, and Mexico. That will elevate Iowa basketball the same as a greater emphasis on strength and conditioning.

If DeVries were coaching these same players, Iowa would be an NCAA team. You don't play defense and you don't rebound, you don't win. It has nothing to do with how much you can bench press. LOL

Nearly every post you try to make political. Just stop.

Lifting weights would make a difference. In order to play physical you have to be strong enough. These skinny white boys get shoved everywhere. Hell Caitlin Clark but on a bunch of muscle to help her get better. Seemed to work out ok for her. But the coaching sucks so to your point, we would be stronger but still have a pussy mentality.

Pretty archaic (and doltish) take. The list of NBA players that attribute improvement in their game to strength training is endless. Michael Jordan said he was tired of getting knocked around when playing the Detroit Pistons so he started an offseason program to add muscle and his game exploded. Steph Curry transformed his body with a strength training program that he points to as the key to his NBA success. I could go on but I’ve been critical about the strength program for Iowa basketball dating back to Dr. Tom Davis. I had regular conversations with the strength coach for Dr. Tom and boy wonder and the program was trash. Players didn’t show up for workouts and they just let it slide as workouts were not “mandatory”. I haven’t talked to the strength coach since Lick and Fran but it appears to no changes have been made. The strength program in comparison to others in the Big 10 was greatly lacking. I’ll try to find out more about what Devries philosophy on strength training but don’t really have the contacts in the business I used to. I do know he took his strength coach from Drake to West Virginia with him where he is now the assistant strength and conditioning coach so I think he values S & C pretty highly.

This has been the defensive mission the past handful of games and it has worked to perfection for our competition, basically slashing 20 or so points off our scoring. Unfortunately it has exposed both players and their limitations. Adding zero points and two rebounds is just not enough production for a player that averages 30 minutes a game. At least Sandfort usually boards well. He didn't even manage that last night. If we can't overcome this trend, it's going to be a long, long year.

Starting lineup based on defensive effort should be...

1 Thelwell
2 Dix
3 Treore
4 Dembele
5 Freeman
Would love to see it. Try and win with a physical brand of half-court basketball. But Fran's ego would get in the way. He has a deep-seated need to be thought of as some kind of offensive guru.

Fran doesn't want them to put on too much muscle so they can run around non-stop for his motion offense. This of course makes for an embarrassing defense.

Sweet jameis you are retarded

Dude is not having fun out there. He deserves better.
His body language the last 4-5 games has not been good. And his effort on both ends last night was terrible. Then you toss in the Sandfort bros who couldn’t guard me and it’s a shitshow. As you said at halftime last night that game was still there for the taking. OSU is very mediocre and that arena is a mausoleum. But we laid down. Give Tadjo 10-15 minutes. He’s big and athletic. Of course he’s raw but this lineup is not the answer. We will be lucky to stay out of the bottom 3 and make the Big Ten tournament if this keeps up.

You think lifting is stupid too.

Seems about right.

This. Someone posted about Iowa making a sweet 16 run. At this point we may not even play in the B1G tournament let alone the big dance...

This.

His off season weight gain was the addition of a spare tire around his mid section.
Part of our non existent strength training program. This happens every game by the way. Back to Dix it looks like he’s checked out for the season. I’m not sure if Fran stays he comes back. And if he continues to play with zero effort on either end it might be time for him to take his money elsewhere.

So Fran never allowed him to drive into the lane and pull up for a jumper? Interesting

I noticed that 3.5 minutes into the game last night, they had Freeman on camera. He was holding his short bottoms and breathing very heavy. This was after the first 3.5 minutes of the game.
Noticed this too, the first few possession of the game Owen play perfect defense on the ball screens, everything was working and then after a couple minutes he's tired and starts fouling and the game goes down hill.

It's kind of hard to blame him because for the better part of last year and this year he's been out there playing solid defense on the other teams best perimeter player and it makes essentially no difference on this team in terms of getting stops.

Then on the other end he works hard to get good high percentage looks while Payton plays pretend nba player and throws up garbage every time he touches the ball.

Dembele might want to play defense, but he is in no way a good defender. He's slow as molasses. If it's just about defense, then move Freeman to the 4 and put Mulvey in at the 5.
Agreed. Mulvey plays hard, sets good screens, and at least makes some effort.

At this point nothing can hurt.
