Two of the top programs in our state come from the same city. Yes, part of the reason they are solid is because each of them has a division one caliber player but there have been many players coming out of Waukee the last few years. For those in the know, what is making this happen? Do they have an outstanding youth program? Is there an outstanding AAU program in Waukee? Why are they having more success than the other schools in the Des Moines area?

I've lived in Waukee for almost 10 years after living in CR for 15 years. Des Moines has more facilities. I was involved in Fastpitch softball. CR only had one indoor facility for winter use when we moved. There is at least 5 here in DSM.

It's not just Waukee though as Johnston usually has a good team too as does Valley. Waukee stands out lately since they have had 2 Sandforts Devries and Omaha come through. If Devries doesn't get the Drake job then Tucker wouldn't have been here. Omaha, not sure how he ended up here. Then he left and came back.

Really not much different from football and baseball either if you think about it. Des Moines Dowling in football. Johnston, Urbandale and Waukee have been loaded in baseball. The CIML has bullied the rest of the state.

I’ve said it before.

Eastern Iowa & the rest of the state are done.

Des Moines metro needs it’s own 6A league.

The east side isn't that far off in basketball. However, the only big school sports I can really think of that are close to the central part of the state and eastern are:
Swimming (although its kind of Ankeny and IC West/Liberty combined then everyone else)
Boys basketball
Girls basketball
Volleyball (east is probably better)
Boys soccer

Football and girls soccer are the two furthest apart from the central and east. Like, not even in the same world. I say this being a girls soccer coach on the east side. Our girls work their butts off and already putting in so much time but we just don't have the same players.

Probably true given the population increases in DM metro area
i think that plays a big part.

I umpired freshman softball game between Waukee and Fort Dodge a few years ago. Waukee had enough players for three teams. Waukee threw 5 pitchers in the doubleheader. All very skilled. I went home and told my wife and said four of those girls may never throw a varsity inning. All were better than 1A and 2a varsity pitchers in area I see.

Billew's dunk was impressive. Here's a couple from Indiana last weekend, one from Brownstown Central player and Purdue commit Jack Benter, the other from Kokomo's Flory Bidunga, the #1 Center in Indiana and #4 Class of 2024 recruit in the country

Omaha Billew is a terrific player, but is he actually from Waukee? He's played for Dowling and then transfered to Waukee, then left, and now for his senior year, he's back at Waukee. Can a kid just jump around high schools like that? Four moves in four years? There's some reason Fran has not gone after him. I mean, he starts day one for Iowa. And if he really ends up permanently at Iowa State is another question. The BIG BOYS will come recruiting in spring if he gets Waukee another title.

First one looks like a potential law suit in 2023.....................

The second one is just plain disrespectful lol.

For softball? Fort Dodge won two years ago. Waukee NW won last year. Waukee High made state last year which was a surprise because they got the short end of the stick talent wise after the split. A few players came back to play high school ball at Waukee after the coach went to NW. You really only need one ace though and NW has a pretty good one. Unless they find another they will fall back to the pack after she graduates this year.

That's definitely true. I coached travel ball and usually had a mix DSM suburb kids and small town kids. The kids that play 4-5 years of varsity would only start their senior years if they moved to the burbs.

Softball is one sport Fort Dodge is consistently good at. I do believe they have only won one state championship.

Pleasant Valley disagrees. They are just getting started.

So you think he will ask to be let out of his LOI?
