Waukee Basketball

Omaha Billew is a terrific player, but is he actually from Waukee? He's played for Dowling and then transfered to Waukee, then left, and now for his senior year, he's back at Waukee. Can a kid just jump around high schools like that? Four moves in four years? There's some reason Fran has not gone after him. I mean, he starts day one for Iowa. And if he really ends up permanently at Iowa State is another question. The BIG BOYS will come recruiting in spring if he gets Waukee another title.
1. Yes kids can bounce around pretty easily nowadays.

2. He’s already signed with ISU

3. He’ll only be there a year or two

Oh, side note to this. I'm super jealous of the crowd in this game. It would take any of the Iowa City schools probably 4 games to get that crowd and 10 games to get that student section!
I know a few people. Maybe we can do a "Scared Straight" kinda thing and scare the kids into going to the games more often............yeah?

I don't normally get too up or down on a recruit but losing that kid to ISU hurts. GDit.
I’m going to go out on a limb and say Dembele has a better college career than Omaha. Billew is a one and done and doesn’t appear to be a “team” player, based on his jumping around from school to school. Dembele will play four years and odds are, given Fran’s history with big guys, will improve dramatically.

Well it must've been a hell of a game then for an Omaha Biliew-led Iowa team to come up short of a national championship. :)

Btw, thanks in advance for letting us have him.
You can get just about anything with enough cash…..except maybe Kadyn Proctor;)

I've lived in Waukee for almost 10 years after living in CR for 15 years. Des Moines has more facilities. I was involved in Fastpitch softball. CR only had one indoor facility for winter use when we moved. There is at least 5 here in DSM.

It's not just Waukee though as Johnston usually has a good team too as does Valley. Waukee stands out lately since they have had 2 Sandforts Devries and Omaha come through. If Devries doesn't get the Drake job then Tucker wouldn't have been here. Omaha, not sure how he ended up here. Then he left and came back.

Really not much different from football and baseball either if you think about it. Des Moines Dowling in football. Johnston, Urbandale and Waukee have been loaded in baseball. The CIML has bullied the rest of the state.
How are the 2 Sandforts Omaha and DeVries all ending up at the same school when they are plenty of other great schools in the area?

I think the Sandforts have always lived in Waukee. Devries started coaching Drake in 2018 which would have been Tucker's soph year. Waukee is one of the fastest growing cities in the state with lots of money. Basketball aside, it probably came down to Waukee or West Des Moines as to where to live making that kind of money and working downtown at Drake. Now factor in that Sandfort is there as a highly rated sophomore to pair up with Tucker and there you go. Not sure where Omaha played his freshman year but he was there as a soph when Payton and Tucker were seniors and won state. Probably enticed by the chance to play with those two and Pryce and win state. If Medved doesn't leave Drake after one year then Tucker isn't playing at Waukee and Omaha might not come there either. They would have been left with just the Sandforts and the rest of the team. Still good but not a powerhouse.

From a guy from the East side of Iowa-- when Waukee won with DeVries and Sandfort and crew, that was one of the best teams ever to win the Iowa 4A title, I thought . Now the two Waukee schools have two tremendous athletes and will contend again this year. A couple of years doesn't mean a dynasty, but the Des Moines area teams have big enrollments and loads of talent. Go back to the entirety of the last 30-50 years though, and the East has dominated. Hope it doesn't end up like football where the DM Metro area basically owns the sport, at least among the big schools.

Times have changed. We had a football-focused thread on this in the Lounge back in the fall. A team from the Eastern side of the state has not won the "Big School" (4A now 5A) title in football since 2009.

The suburban Des Moines schools have left everybody else in the dust. There is no reason to think it will change any time soon.

CR Kennedy has a good chance this year, in basketball.

Is he a good student?
No, and it’s very evident in how schools recruited him and why he’s moved around. Tremendous bball player and I’m sure Isu will find a way to keep him elegible. Also, pretty common with many high level bball players nowadays.

After this year, both schools will drop off quite a bit. Loaded Seniors at both schools and the Junior classes are very meh.

We have a junior at our high school that played limited varsity minutes at a small school 15 miles away last year. He transferred into our school this year and had to sit out the first 10 varsity games or so because his old school wouldn't sign off on it. I don't know Omaha's situation but I wouldn't say they can bounce around easily.

As stated earlier...the DM metro is a magnet. Good coaching, elite facilities, rabid parents, and playing with other top notch kids is the draw.

It definitely is headed in the same direction as football.

I know of 6th/7th graders being approached(unofficially) to play in certain programs.

Baseball/football/basketball...even the IHSAA is spreading the DM area teams in post season assignments to get the best teams to the various State tourneys.

ISU will do a great job preparing him to be a professional basketball player which will be his career.

It's never been common for high level basketball players to be great students.

You’ll see above, I agree. It’s very common nowadays and there is no reason the top guys should even have to go to college.

LOL, Fran did go after him. He had an offer, and visited Iowa on 6/9/21. Your whole post is terrible.

Listen, Omaha is a tremendous basketball talent. There is a reason other schools had to eventually end this relationship, including all Big Ten schools, and that's ok. Kansas was looking good, until those recruiting violations popped up and they couldn't take another chance. ISU found a way to make it possible as one of the last men standing, and let's be honest, this isn't anything new for ISU basketball. Probably one where you guys should just smile and be happy he's going to make it to your campus.

In which sport?
- Girl's basketball is #2 in the state and undefeated at 17-0.
- Girl's volleyball is #3 in the state. They lost in the state title last year and won the championship in 2021. This season they have beaten Urbandale, Waukee, and Ankeny Centennial.
- Boy's football went 10-1 and lost to West Des Moines Valley 15-10. Valley ended up going to the state championship and lost to a historically good SE Polk team. PV was playing without their DE, Andrew Depaepe, that committed to Michigan State.
- Boy's soccer won back to back state championships in 2021/2022.
- Boy's baseball won the state championship in 2021 over Johnston.

PV is not competitive in basketball at the state level... yet.

I think that's a pretty good list.

The eastern side of Bettendorf is exploding with growth and it's not going to slow down anytime soon. The money is pouring into PV. There's really nowhere to build within the Bettendorf school district, so the growth is all happening out in the Pleasant Valley school district. The era of Bettendorf dominance in sports is over. The only thing that's going to slow PV down will be when they have to split into two high schools, similar to Liberty in the Iowa City area. The TBK Bank Sports Complex is also a great resource for kids in the QC area working on their skills.
