That is who I thought that was.Is #50 Mike Gatens, Matt's dad? Wonder how many the oldtimers can name?
I suspect they aren't much different than those of many schools of that era. Forty or so years from now, that is if there is college basketball) fans will be making fun of unis of these times.I love the Hawks, and the history with them, but those are some of the worst looking uniforms I've seen. The jerseys aren't horrid, but those shorts...dayum.
what year?
Looks like the 1973-74 squad, the last for coach Dick Schultz.
Larry Parker #32
Mike Gatens #50
Neil Fegebank #15
Sky King #11 (freshman, he wore #54 as upper classman)
Scott Thompson #34
Leon Thomas #52
Archie Mays #4
John Hairston #42
Candy LaPrince #10
Glen Worley #44
I would like to see HAWKEYES on the front of the jerseys instead of Iowa. Why don't home teams play in their school colors? I detest white jerseys. Just wait..The style eventually will swing back to the butt huggers and everyone will laugh at the hideous pants worn for the last 15 -20 years.

#44 is William Mayfield I believe. That's a serious insult comparing him in any way to Worley.
I think # 33 is Larry Moore from Quincy Ill.Looks like the 1973-74 squad, the last for coach Dick Schultz.

No, Mayfield was recruited by Lute Olson two years later. #44 is Glen Worley. The player holding the basketball is Jim Collins from Fort Dodge.#44 is William Mayfield I believe. That's a serious insult comparing him in any way to Worley.
# 3 is Cliff Sumpter, He had a lot of potential, but left the team a year later. Is #50 Mike Gatens, Matt's dad? Wonder how many tumpterhe oldtimers can name?
Glen Worley wasn't even born until the early 80s, unless there was more than one who played for Iowa. That also isn't William Mayfield, who was a very underrated player. Not sure who #44 is. I started watching the Hawks in 75-76 season. No, Mayfield was recruited by Lute Olson two years later. #44 is Glen Worley. The player holding the basketball is Jim Collins from Fort Dodge.
# 44 is Glen Worley senior.Glen Worley wasn't even born until the early 80s, unless there was more than one who played for Iowa. That also isn't William Mayfield, who was a very underrated player. Not sure who #44 is. I started watching the Hawks in 75-76 season.
Dude, what are you smoking? #44 is definitely Glen Worley.Glen Worley wasn't even born until the early 80s, unless there was more than one who played for Iowa. That also isn't William Mayfield, who was a very underrated player. Not sure who #44 is. I started watching the Hawks in 75-76 season.
One of the more lengendary Iowa HS BB players of all time.
I recognize the Converse chuck taylor's, but what brand are those shoes with the 2 black stripes, I don't remember those? Never mind, answered my own question (they were Pro-Keds)
Almost sure it's 1974. #10 is my childhood favorite Candy LaPrince and #50 is Mike Gatens...only year together was '74

Dick Peth was not on that team, he was a freshman in 1975-76, and was recruited by Lute Olson, just like William Mayfield. # 33 is Larry Moore from Quincy , Illinois.Dick Peth was on that team, I believe he was #33.
Good call on Sky King. The #11 confused me as well. Sky was our best player in the couple of years pre-Lester. I used to love attending games in those days. The Field House was ugly as hell, but it could really rock like Carver-Hawkeye never has. Thanks to the OP for the pic. I'm gonna take a stab that #44 is Clay Hargrave, who would become the shortest player to lead the B10 in rebounding at 6'4". Also thanks to hawk halen, I thought #11 looked like Bruce King but didn't recall him wearing that number.
Though belts were popular in the '50s and early '60s, by '74 we might have been the only team in the NCAA still using them. The black roadies were a different style uni, but also had belts (must have been a Schultz thing, since he also coached baseball). Then Lute came and switched to the Laker-ish style with the black side panels on the shorts, that were worn the rest of the '70s.
