We (U.S.) Just Got Played by Russia

Heard part of the peace negotiations will require ukraine to have a new election to replace zalenski after he banned elections in the country. The dems and zalensky aren't gonna be fans of that democracy taking place, I'm calling it right now

Reuters reports the US has sent the following questions for Europe to answer:

  1. What do you view as a Europe-backed security guarantee or assurance that would serve as a sufficient deterrent to Russia while also ensuring this conflict ends with an enduring peace settlement?
  2. Which European and/or third countries do you believe could or would participate in such an arrangement? Are there any countries you believe would be indispensable? Would your country be willing to deploy its troops to Ukraine as part of a peace settlement?
  3. If third country military forces were to be deployed to Ukraine as part of a peace arrangement, what would you consider to be the necessary size of such a European-led force? How and where would these forces be deployed and for how long?
  4. What actions do US allies and partners need to be prepared to take if Russia attacks these forces?
  5. What, if any, US support requirements would your government consider necessary for its participation in these security arrangements Specifically, which short-term and long-term resources do you think will be required from the US?
  6. What additional capabilities, equipment and maintenance sustainment options is your government prepared to provide to Ukraine to improve its negotiating hand and increase pressure on Russia? What more is your government prepared to do to increase its sanctions on Russia, including more strictly enforcing sanctions and better targeting third countries enabling Russia globally?

those are some fairly decent questions.

Most of those questions have been asked and answered as part of our alliance with NATO.

The US should insist on actual elections in Russia then. They haven't had an actual election in decades.

Time for a trip down memory lane since I've got a little time to kill.

Putin prefers Biden. Just saying....
Putin is loving some Biden.

Putin said he prefers Biden.
.
Putin says he hopes Biden wins. I wonder why?
Yet Putin stated he prefers Biden
The OP is wrong. Putin's interview with USA Today says Putin wants Biden to win. Biden is "old school and predictable".
Um, Putin said a couple weeks ago that he prefers Biden over Trump.

Regardless of what you, "heard," it's asinine to think Zalensky would agree to such nonsense. Right now, Zalensky is Ukraine's leader. Putin is Russia's. If you're not pulling for Zalensky, you're rooting for putin.
Zalensky banned elections so he could not be usurped. Expecting democracy to take place is a fairly low bar as far as asks go tbh

The NATO treaty specifically exempts non-member territory:

Are you familiar with Article 6?

Article 6

For the purpose of Article 5, an armed attack on one or more of the Parties is deemed to include an armed attack:

  • on the territory of any of the Parties in Europe or North America, on the Algerian Departments of France, on the territory of Turkey or on the Islands under the jurisdiction of any of the Parties in the North Atlantic area north of the Tropic of Cancer;
  • on the forces, vessels, or aircraft of any of the Parties, when in or over these territories or any other area in Europe in which occupation forces of any of the Parties were stationed on the date when the Treaty entered into force or the Mediterranean Sea or the North Atlantic area north of the Tropic of Cancer.

Very much so.

Elections are curtailed by the declaration of martial law, which came about because they were invaded.

On the subject of Ukrainians voting, I think a few people have forgotten it was Zelensky that broached this topic:

August 1, 2024
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy took another concrete step towards launching ceasefire talks with Russia by saying he might call for a referendum on the issue of making territorial concessions to Russia ahead of planned negotiations this autumn.
Zelensky told Le Monde that accepting territorial losses would be a very difficult decision and suggested he might put it to a referendum. He also admitted that giving up land to bring an end to the war would constitute a victory for Russian President Vladimir Putin.
“Giving up Ukrainian territories is 'a very, very difficult' question,” Zelenskiy told the French newspaper.
Zelenskiy’s comments on a referendum follow on from a similar call for a referendum by Kyiv Vitaly Klitschko, who said in a recent interview at the end of July that Zelenskiy “risks political suicide” if he tries to give away Ukrainian territory to Russia as part of a deal to end the fighting.
"The next few months will be very difficult for Volodymyr Zelenskiy. Should he continue the war with new deaths and destruction, or consider a territorial compromise with Putin?" Klitschko said during an interview with the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera. "How can we explain to the country that we need to give up pieces of our territory that cost the lives of thousands of our fighting heroes? Whatever move he makes, our president risks political suicide."
"Zelenskiy will probably need to resort to a referendum. I don't think he can reach such painful and important agreements on his own without popular legitimisation," Klitschko added.
Commentators warn that Zelenskiy's biggest political problem is the threat of protests or insurrection by fractions on the far-right or nationalists, who will not accept defeat or territorial concessions. A referendum would give him some political cover should he make this very unpopular decision.

The funniest part about it is that there were so many posts of finance talking about how putin loves weakness and takes advantage of weakness because he's a "bully" which is a nice way to describe a murderous dictator but that's fine. Then he'd follow it up about how Putin loves Biden.

Little did ol Finance know, the weakness that Putin loves and takes advantage of, is currently in the White House. Trump is the weakness that a foreign adversary dictator is able to take advantage of to get what he wants.

Sorry to keep bringing this up Finance, but your posting history about this whole topic is extraordinarily stupid but also very entertaining to read through.

Now quick, pull the trigger on your "Dems only believe Putin when it backs their opinion" bullshit.

Do you want Russia to withdraw from Ukraine?
Yes, though there will likely need to be a neutrally controlled "buffer zone" between Russian and ukraine controlled territories. Ukraine will end up losing some land in all this, including what Russia took from them when Obama and biden were in the Whitehouse.
An attack on one is an attack on all.

What does that mean to you?
Ukraine isn't part of nato nor will they be allowed in after the peace talks are finalized (my prediction)

Diplomatic norms are being restored. Embassy staffing levels increased to pre-Biden numbers. Russia has a seat at the table again.

Biden crushed Russia's economy, and tiny is ready to give it all back.
lol…Biden crushed Russia’s economy?!?

An attack on one is an attack on all.

What does that mean to you?
An attack on Hawaii doesn't even trigger Article 5.
You know that, right?

Article 6 makes clear that article 5 is only triggered in specific places, and putting your troops into a non-member country doesn't leave them covered.

Either you're really ignorant, or just not an honest person. The former is curable.

The six questions pertain specifically to Ukraine, and are not addressed by the NATO treaty.
