A neighbor posted something political in our neighborhood FB group—a place that’s been pretty peaceful for nearly 11 years. The only previous keyboard fight was when the HOA raised our dues.

And yes, it’s going exactly as you’d expect: a live, non-anonymous version of HBOT. I chimed in with this meme and then kindly exited.

Smart choice.

You could also link this great article.

Great meme! Throughout history, religious disagreements have been known result in wars and bloodshed. ;)

I do not understand why anyone would join a neighborhood Facebook group in the first place.
People are weird, man. They try to find power in the weirdest places.

My neighbor suggested an edit to Next Door so that our street was listed in the neighborhood it is actually a part of. The admin of the neighborhood that falsely claimed our street harassed my neighbor over it for almost a month. Said she was "Poaching her territory."

Like.. what?

I just respond with funny memes about anything non-political when the group texts I’m on turn political.

Our HOA Pres started it and it's actually a great place for information, community, "anyone seen my package?" etc. For example, a neighbor posted this yesterday:

Good morning neighbors! Are there any plumbers in the neighborhood? I need someone asap. My son broke the lever in the shower last night and what I know to be my emergency water shut off valves didn’t stop the water flow so, I need someone that can come asap and help me out. Thank you.

I wound up going over there and the shower in her Master Bathroom had been running full blast since the night prior. The darn room was like a sauna (surprised the water heaters kept up). I was able to get the water off and actually fix it for her. So, up until last night, it's been a pretty great resource.

Terrible ending to your story. Started off well and had potential.

The best reason I can surmise here in ankeny is to keep track of coyote sightings, for pet safety reasons. Other than that, from what I can tell from what my wife tells me, it is a lot like here, except crazier and not anonymous.
DUDE! 👇

Just saw a coyote in the Coves neighborhood. Watch your pets.

People that go political on Facebook, the neighborhood groups and those that put up political yard signs are emotionally driven people. But it is nice to know who the commies are.
I have to say the vast majority of people taking to Facebook and getting political is overwhelmingly Trump/MAGA oriented. Most liberals and independents I know have more self awareness.

Hence why it's been a surprisingly peaceful community forum. People don't even bitch about lawns, well, because most of us have lawn guys. ;)

I'm not sure how this plays out...people yelling at each other then show up at the annual Memorial Day Pool cookout like:

Awkward George Costanza GIF

I take the same approach with neighbors as I mentioned in @BrianNole777 's ending friendships/family thread.

Did you PIITB?

I assume the group has a caveat or rule to not post such things?
Nope. Here's what HOA Prez posted in the thread...definitely used ChatGPT (and it's 100% TL;DR)

I’d like to take a moment to address some concerns and clarify a few things about the private group’s purpose I started and how we should navigate different perspectives.

In the recent past, I was approached—yes, even yelled at in a parking lot—by someone in the private group who felt I should censor certain posts by others in this private group of a political nature. Let me reiterate what I’ve said before: we are adults. My role as an admin for this private group is not to police opinions or dictate what you can and cannot share, as long as posts adhere to the law and our group rules.

This is a space where everyone is welcome to express themselves. If you want to share a political meme, celebrate an election result, or post something that reflects your political views, that is entirely your right. Some will agree, and others may not—that’s the nature of free expression in a diverse community such as ours.

That said, humor is important for all of us. Life can be stressful, and sometimes a funny meme or lighthearted post can provide the laugh we all need. Let’s try not to take everything to heart or let differing opinions ruin the sense of community we’ve built here. A little humor and perspective go a long way!

I also ask that everyone keep the group rules in mind:

1. Be Kind and Courteous: Healthy debates are natural, but kindness is required. Personal attacks and unkindness won’t be tolerated.
2. Respect Everyone’s Privacy: What’s shared in this group should stay in this group.
3. No Hate Speech or Bullying: Bullying of any kind isn’t allowed. Degrading comments about race, religion, culture, sexual orientation, gender, or identity will not be tolerated.
4. No Excessive Promotions or Spam: Give more than you take. Members may post one business-related advertisement per day.
5. Discussion Posts or Member Removal: Admins reserve the right to remove posts and members as necessary to maintain harmony.
6. Private Group Rules: Rules may be updated by admins without prior notice.

We can disagree without being disrespectful, and we can engage in discussions without turning to personal attacks or accusations. This group is here to bring us together as a community, not tear us apart.

If anyone has questions or concerns about what’s appropriate to post or how to engage with others, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
Thank you all for being part of this group and helping us maintain a space where everyone feels welcome, respected, and maybe even entertained with a good laugh now and then.
