on how things are going?

I certainly hope we get some of those insiders who get to visit practice that will give us some nuggets.

Does anyone know if fall baseball is overlapping with bball....and if it is, how long does that go on for?

I hope Connor doesn't get worn out like he did last year....should be a vital part of this team/season.

I hope that the veterans learned from last year, and are highly motivated to play defense...that they set the example in practice with their effort and intensity during defensive drills and the defense they play in scrimmages.

This time of year is my absolute favorite as an Iowa fan....Football going on and bball getting underway. Doesn't get any better than having both of these teams to read about and follow going on at the same time.

No, we will hear Fran say that at least 3 of these guys are the greatest shooters he has ever coached.
So there was an article somewhere that I read the other day. In it, Fran said he can be too hard on players during games, so outside of dames he tries to build confidence by saying positive things.

I get that.......say good things about the players publicly so they know you care about them and appreciate/recognize their abilities and contributions. That way, when the coach gives constructive criticism the player takes it as that even if delivered in a fairly harsh way.

The only recent comments I've heard are from Tom Kskerts talk with Coach Speraw. Tom's comments from coach were that the team has matured. He thinks they will be better defensive team.

Individually he mentioned Kriener as being impressive this summer and fall. Coach Speraw was concerned that Pemsl had lost to much weight. Maishe is fighting a injury. Jordan has gotten quicker laterally. He told a Joe W story. That was about it.

I would certainly hope so! No reason we shouldn't. Fran needs to get some information out there. Information from someone else, other than staff.

It looks like Hawkeye baseball ends the weekend of October 12th. Plenty of time before the basketball season.

You would think they’d do something to try to drum up interest for MBB considering no PTL and the kind of season the Hawks are coming off of.

I have thought about this and I'm not sure I would do or say anything. I would let performance on the court do all of the talking. IMHO, winning is the only thing that's going to get people back into Carver. I sure wouldn't be going out of my way to go to games if the product would be what it was last season.

Bohannon is Steph Curry, Wieskamp is Klay Thompson, Cook is Draymond Green and Garza is a Dirk Nowitzki and everyone will play because everyone is too good not to get minutes.

There will probably be a couple of posters (not Wartburg, above) who will pretend to have inside info like they always do, but the posts will be so vague that we will be able to see through them.

Thanks for the summary. JB being a little quicker laterally would be huge news for defensive weaknesses. Kriener shining this summer combined with Garza’s surgery makes me think we’ll see more of Ryan this fall than last. Which could also be good news defensively for the team. MD injury puts the focus again on Moss producing in the backcourt. But a healthy Connor does probably mean more successful passing to the post.

One update, since I didn't see it mentioned in the Garza thread (or in any other threads on this board) and it's now public info (thanks Luka's dad)...

It doesn't sound like Garza will be practicing for a while, maybe until close to the exhibition (if my math and judging of the timeline are accurate). He had a 10 lb cyst removed from his spleen and it sounded pretty serious, not just serious because it was a 10 pound cyst, serious because it was impacting internal functions. I don't know what they will have him do in addition to his rehab, likely some cardio and whatever strength training he can handle until he's cleared to fully practice.

Wow. Not good! Hope he recovers well & quickly. Glad they caught when they did, before anything worse happened... The benefits of being at a university hospital definitely helps our student athletes. Even tho they may go elsewhere closer to home, or wherever, for their procedures...

RK being in top shape will come in handy. But we can always go smaller with a slimmed down Pemsl and Nunge.

Are you sure this is accurate? Luka and anyone even looking at him would have known, if he had a "10-lb cyst". I looked at the thread, and someone mentioned a friend, who had a 10-lb cyst, and the dr and her parents had thought she was pregnant. I missed any update on whether he would start practicing, if there has been one.

His dad made a public post, I think on FB, about it and TK mentioned it a couple of weeks ago or so on the pay site. 10lb cyst, 9 lbs was fluid. Just found the original post from early Sep. Said a couple of weeks off, maybe back to basketball 6 weeks post surgery.

I would guess there is a big difference between a 6'11" 240 lb guy vs a 5'5" 120 lb girl in noticing a 10 lb cyst.

I keep hearing Krieners name, which would be great with Luka bouncing back. Heck it wouldn’t be the end of the world if Luka had to take a medical year.

So, basically Luka gave birth to a good sized bouncing baby cyst. Still, a little hard to believe that would not have been pretty noticeable. Most cysts aren't 10 ozs.

Kriener and Nunge I think would make a nice defensive combo at the post while Garza is out. Nunge is upto 235lbs now as well.

The D has to improve. They were Charles Barkley TERRRRIBLE last year. I hope they scrap the zone that left the corner 3 open so much. It could be fun to watch Moss, Joe, Bo and Dailey play together and shoot 3s. I think the O will be top tier, gonna have to prove it on D. Still not sure how Fran manages minutes. Looking forward to it.

How long is Dailey expected to be out with the injury?

I can fill in a few blanks, as I saw Coach Speraw's speech to an Eastern Iowa athletic club.

Dailey has been injured this summer, but he expects him to be more effective this year because he won't be asked to play out of position.

Connor gives them a PG with more size and strength.

Nunge has improved his lower body strength, although he still has work to do on his upper body.

Kriener (as mentioned) seems to be primed to make a bigger impact this year.

Garza was shooting really well this summer. Coach Speraw said Luka would probably be out 6 weeks. He related a story where they had some recruits in the BBall practice facility, and Luka showed up after his surgery. They had a great team bonding experience as the players all greeted Luka.

He compared Wieskamp, to Woody and Gesell, in regards to being more mature and ready to contribute than most freshmen. The story: He watched Joe W play a game he thought he'd go off for about 45 points. To his disappointment Joe looked like he got tired in the second half, and for Wieskamp it was an off scoring game. He suggested to Joe that he should get in some extra sprints to help his stamina as the season progressed. After Coach Speraw left Joe texted him that he was playing with a fever of 101 degree's.

That's all I remember. I'm ready for this year's Iowa BBall team to erase the disappointment we all experienced last season.

Thanks for sharing! Good stuff there.

Is Dailey going to play the 2 or 3? Or does that really matter?

Sounds like Luka will be available to play at the season opener. However we should expect him to be a little rusty.

Joe W is going to be a solid player right out the gate. He may not become a game changer (or maybe he will?), but his addition to the puzzle could be much bigger than his actual contributions...

This will be fun to see!

I always like information, but all of it means literally nothing until they play games. Last year all we heard was how overlooked the team was and how steeled the team was by being picked anywhere from 8th to 12th in the league. And they proceeded to go out and play with zero sacrifice or unselfishness and go 4-14.

I would hope and expect that if there is good character on the team that last year was the dose of humility and reality this group needed. Everyone talking about the emphasis on defense and "getting it" is fine. It's better than the opposite. But I'm in the camp where even practice reports from Gregg Popovich saying "this is the greatest college team I've ever seen" would have me skeptical until games are played.

Believe me I agree......and in a weird sort of way, what you said (bold and italic) above is exactly the key...I could be completely wrong, but I think that last year at this time that team recognized how much talent they had (a lot) and they just came off of a reasonably successful year where they felt that they were going to make a serious step forward. And maybe didn't buy in at the defensive end like they should have?

Connor getting mono was an outlier. Won't happen again. He is another year older and stronger. Should play a big part of the team's success this season.

I’d warn about mis-using the word ‘talent’. Talent is what Duke, Kentucky, Kansas, etc. have. That means 1 or more players who were very, very highly recruited and have a legit case to leave for the NBA draft with 1-2 seasons. That’s talent and not what we have at all.

We have a roster full of potentially good 4 year players. There’s a difference between that and ‘talent’. That ‘talent’ word is how expectations get out-of-whack thinking we are ‘loaded’. Do we expect to be 4-14 in the B1G? No, of course not but we have a level of players where we should be on the bubble most years. I do have a good feel about being improved this year.

Talent is the natural ability to do something well

I'd warn about overanalyzing the meaning of the word talent.

We might get some news after the October 25th McCaffery annual Cancer fundraiser. He generally gives a pretty decent update and talks about the upcoming season, etc.

There is talent on every P5 college basketball team. The difference is varying degrees of it.

But I agree the term is misused and overstated. As it relates to Iowa, it's probably most accurate to say Iowa has a high degree of raw potential.
