We're burning the shirt?

I am still trying to figure that out. He may not play another snap this year. As much as people complain about Ott not getting an extra year, if his freshmen year hadn't been wasted he would be playing this year.

I think it comes down to confidence in the recruits coming in. What's the point of saving him if they know in 3 years he is either going to be really good or be passed by.

Uh, no.

I said in the game thread. It really doesn't matter if he is starting next year. I doubt he'd be a four year starter at the QB position. Because if he's good enough he will leave for the NFL after his redshirt junior year that was he is the same age as the other QBs in his classes and he can't get knocked for being "too old" or "not much room for development" or whatever other cliche you want to throw out there.

With how bad Beathard got hit today, and coaches already saying that Stanley is the real deal, might as well get him in. He obviously beat out Wiegers, get him game experience

setting up for Wieger's to transfer if wants to play, Cook to move to TE. It is good sign when a Freshman QB makes noise....Drew Tate, Beathard...heard good things about both of them as Freshmen. A QB either has it or doesn't as a playmaker.

QBs like Vandenberg and JC Christiansen that got their RS year in and you can't say it helped their abilities.

Wiegers hasnt looked good during his time at Iowa. If Stanley is better, he deserves to be number 2 and get in there. No big deal burning redshirt - he get experience and more opportunities with 1st string in practice. With how CJB got pummeled today, I expect Stanley to get some meaningful time this year in conference play....

There is not one thing anyone can convince me that this was an intelligent decision. Makes zero sense to me.

Offense good for the most part. But, pass protection at tackle remains suspect. May need Stanley if the coaches don't think Wiegers is the answer should something cause CJB to miss any playing time.

How many times does a back up qb at Iowa get into a game? Seriously! We blew a year for a guy who may not play the rest of the year. He got garbage time and handed off 5 x.

I wish I shared your certainty that CJB is guaranteed to avoid injury this year. He has proven he rarely gets dinged.

Maybe it's just because I'm used to it, but it looked like he might possibly be limping on his last drive.

You can pull his redshirt if/when CJ gets injured enough to miss a few games. Handing the ball off five times does nothing in terms of gaining valuable experience.

Former players like Drew Tate, who also skipped a redshirt to be #2 his freshman year, disagree with you.

for the umpteenth time! What does it matter?!

if he is starting next year it's highly, highly, highly unlikely he stays for four more years, unless he sucks. Why is it so bad that he doesn't red shirt this year?

I don't always love the Iowa Huddlecast podcast, but Anton & Drew Tate talked about playing as a freshman this year. Drew's point, when asked about whether he had any regrets about being Chandler's backup as a true freshman, was that the #2 guy gets enough practice reps with the regulars that it's a huge leg up going forward. Tate said he was way ahead of Manson going into the next spring just because of the extra reps he got during the 2003 season.

I get the debate and I think I could argue it either way...but if Stanley is the guy, then that's great. Going this route also leaves his redshirt in his pocket, should he need it for injury reasons down the road.

IMHO, you're underselling the practice reps to go into a game as the #2.

Iowa just showed every recruit that they are recruiting that contrary to popular belief that if you got the skills as a true freshman you will get a shot at PT.. Yep hopefully CJ stays healty and we don't see Nate to much but kids come to play I think we all need to get used to.. Any one watch the Alabama game?? true freshman at QB it happens. FORGET THAT RED SHIRT! Toks, Noah, Nate redshirts done and gone, Get ready for game time!

I saw somewhere (forgot where, sorry) that Kirk said after the game that Stanley is going to continue being the one to get game reps. There are multiple games that Iowa SHOULD blow out their opponents, or at least be up enough to get Stanley some valuable experience

Reason for playing 10 true Freshman this year is the staff did a good job recruiting. Maybe if we play these kids as freshman then they won't transfer because some walk on is some how in front of them. If the kid is better than the soph. junior or senior. YOU PLAY THE KID.

Good thing no one has to convince you.

Stanley is our #2 QB now, he will get the reps that requires this year and be ready for 3 solid years.

You're never going to get 4 years out of a QB that's worth a shit anyways.

Iowa isn't going to stop recruiting QB's anytime soon. There is absolutely no reason to reshirt a kid if he has the ability to come into a gave on a given snap. Get the kid experience that he deserves if he is ready. Iowa has a very good one coming in next year. They will be signing one or two every year. Not a big deal. If this is all there is to complain about all year....we are in business.

Imo KF and staff are using playing time as a selling point in recruting from now on. A large majority of kids want to play right away. Or at least see the field within first 2 years.

When is the last time Iowa had a QB leave for the NFL after their Junior year?

Well I certainly don't want to see a starting qb next year who has zero game experience.

Disagree. Plus he gets all of those practice and pregame reps as the 2 for the rest of the year and will be the 1 in January.

That is huge.

Then give him the number 2 practice reps in practice and keep his RS. If CJB goes down, you insert him.

No. If you're giving him all the #2 reps in practice then you've already made the decision. Go all in. Plus, it helps with recruiting to see that there's a chance to compete from day 1.

This is a little outside the box but we are seeing it everywhere in CFB right now (attrition at the QB position)

Any chance they burned the shirt so that an incoming QB knows if they do get redshirted next year they will still have two years as the guy instead of one? So basically if they RS Mansell they now put two years between the guys..

I realize this is a debate that no one wins on, lol, but what games on our remaining schedule would you say our back up will get in due to us winning big at the time? As of this moment, I would say none. Not sure how anyone can say yesterday's game experience is so valuable?

I guess there are a lot of if's and buts for either scenario.

You realize that these guys practice during the week right?

Getting the #2 team reps is a lot different then running the practice team

Playing freshman probably makes sense as we are going to have a lot of attrition due to graduation. There's quite a few players playing significant roles in the junior/senior class/classes. We've had some natural attrition elsewhere. I'm all for it if we can get these guys some real game action in spots across the year.

I said this in another post about Stanley. They like him and think he's going to be the guy next year. If you redshirt him and we end up also liking the kid from Texas that's coming in next summer that puts only 1 year between them. This way you can keep 2 years between those 2 guys. You can get some possible continuity between QB changeovers. This is also a point of consideration in addition to getting the practice reps, etc. that has been pointed out.
