What do we make of that abysmal second half effort?

Depending on your point of view, that second half performance could be concerning. No offense whatsoever, and the defense all of a sudden unable to stop Maryland from driving down the field. If Iowa wants to win out, they can't have a repeat of that. With that said, I don't think we'll see a repeat of that. The team kind of let down their guard.

If no one got hurt, especially CJ, doesn't really matter. Some teaching moments for the coaches and hopefully, the players get a good week of work in coming up.

Defensively...no worries.

I don't think it was effort at all. Concentration lapse on offense? Hell yeah.

I'm just hoping that this was a general malaise from the bye week and a serious wake-up call. 60 minutes, Hawks. 60 minutes.

Try this next week and the outcome won't be good! Indiana will beat us...this lay down BS is why KF had five bad years. This stupid crap will catch up to us.....
Part of this sitting on the ball in the 2nd half has to do with CJ. With a healthier him, we take more risks on 3rd down; it just seems Ferentz wanted to get out of this game with a win, and think about next week when it comes.

Hard to convince the rest of the country the Hawks belong in the discussion when they come out and play like they did in the second half
We will NEVER convince anyone until we win the Big Ten title Game. Even then some will not believe, by then it won't matter because if we are 13-0 we will be one of the four.

Nice post Nostradamas.

Your right, I need to relax! Better to live and fight another day...

I thought we were up 31-7 in the 4th quarter? Take away that kickoff return TD and the game would have a different feel.
I think it would be fair to point out that we were staring 24-14 in the face before King's pick-6.

At the same time, the first half was fantastic and we're 8-0! Go Hawks!

Two biggest weaknesses of this team is pass protection and pass rush. However, our ability to control the LOS, control the clock, limit mistakes and force other teams to make mistakes more than overcomes for those two weaknesses.

Beathard is clearly hurting, to the point where you may think to sit him. Stats weren't bad, but clearly his passing is off and the last thing he wants to do is run. Give his backup the ball until we have to bring him in. I'm not worked up about potentially losing a game with a two game lead. Beathard is a totally different QB when he's healthy!

We were about 50/50 run/pass in the 1st half. In the 2nd that changed and we became very run heavy (understandably being up 21-0). Maryland kept putting 8, even 9 in the box and there was just too many to block effectively. Bottom line is that Iowa did what it needed to do against Maryland to win. Next week Indiana will most likely have a similar game plan, but they have more weapons on offense. Good news is that I don't think that their front four on defense are as good as Maryland.

Get used to seeing people daring us to throw, it's what everyone is gonna do the rest of the year.

It's about how many points you give up. Not much the defense could do about Likely's return...and two face mask penalties helped Maryland on their only touchdown. Honestly, I don't think they get six without the penalties. So, Iowa Defense 7 - Maryland 7. I'd say things were ok.

Honestly, with a three touchdown lead, I think KF and GD decide not to show our next opponent anything they haven't already seen. Certainly field position contributed...but we shut it down too.

I agree. We aren't going to beat any "good" teams with CJ the way he currently is. But apparently whatever ails him isn't healing, so we're apparently stuck. The scrambling ability is now pretty much zero, the QB Draws are zero, the rollouts are non existent, he can't buy time and make plays on the run, and all of that hinders us big time. When he's healthy our offense is dynamic, even with the pedestrian wide receiving corp we have. Damn shame.

If this version of CJ was around at the start of the year, we've probably got 3 losses now. Just sucks to see when things were going so damn good. (yeah, I know, 8-0 and all that fun stuff....)

Reverted to the Old Kirk, play not to lose and protect the lead.
I think he reverted to "Old Kirk" because the main reason he became "New Kirk" is now hobbling on, around and off the field. That's not good in any way, shape or form.

I think you are way overreacting. The defense played well, only giving up one touchdown, and that touchdown was added by two facemask penalties. I think the offense was out of sync in the second half and CJ's lack of mobility now really hurts our offense. We are much better when CJ can move and get away from the rush and he couldn't do that today. Overall it was a big win and we are 8-0 baby! Go Hawks!

Why do people keep saying Maryland moved the ball on us? What I saw was typical contain and bend but don't break hawk football. The only real TD came off a short field due to lackluster O and 2 facemasks penalties that spotted 30 freaking yards. This defense is elite, and the stats and 8-0 record shows it. The scary thing about this team is when our offense is on this team can do some real damage.

I know similar opponents isn't always the best indication, but
Iowa scraped by Illannoy.
Penn State scraped by Maryland.
Penn State just destroyed Illannoy, today.

Penn St f-ing sucks this year and is very lucky we're not on their schedule to give them another "respectable defeat"

Last time I looked Iowa was favored by 16. They won by 16. They dominated the 1st half. They were never in danger of losing this game.

Sure their QB got some yards but it's the same QB that ran for 170 yds and 2 TDS against America's favorite team Ohio State.

8-0. If you didn't think we would be 8-0 at this point than seriously your concerns and emotions should be playing with house money.

Not only isn't it always the best indicator, it absolutely never is an indicator. It's all about matchups. in 2009 we beat Iowa State 37-7 and Arkansas State 24-21. Nebraska dominated Arkansas State and lost to Iowa State.

You can't look at similar opponents. I mean you can but it has no bearing on anything.

I don't think so. I think CJ reinsured his groin late in first half and the coaches went run-heavy and depended on the defense. If Maryland had mounted any significant challenge, I think the coaches would have had to change strategy, but Iowa was too dominant on D (including key turnovers, a staple of this team), and Iowa did what it had to do to win a game by ... oh, yeah, 16 points even while attempting only two passes in the second half. No, Old Kirk, just Smart Kirk.

Why are people blowing this out of proportion? It wasn't "abysmal". It was a 10-15 2nd half.

They played to protect CJ. The sack he took down inside the 20 we thought ended his day. He sat on the ground and looked like he could not get up. We he did get up his first steps were limping. He's hurt and not playing the same game as he was at the start of the season. How can anyone not see that?
