What type of vacations do you hate, that others enjoy?

Again, I highly recommend European river cruises. Perfect combination of things to do and time to chill on the deck with a drink watching the shoreline for old castles, vineyards, whatever. You get your choice of 2-3 excursions and generally a couple hours to explore on your own before dinner. At least one evening concert off the boat also. Loved all of it.
My friends love those river cruises especially because the ships dock right at the foot of town and it’s so easy to walk to things you want to see. That plus almost no kids is a huge plus.

True that

Any recommended carriers? My wife has been suggesting one of these for quite a while. Appreciate any suggestions
I like AMA and Avalon. Scenic is nice. Viking is good but I hate their payment requirements. They require way too much too early in my opinion. I think choosing your dates and river are almost more important. Find out how they handle low river levels. Or book with a pro that can help you with that. 😂

“foodie” aspects of cruises and foreign travel. Gimme a hamburger, speghetti, a pancake, a beer or soda pop option and I will be in “Hog heaven” on most any trip.
I don’t understand folks who vacation and all they talk about is what they ate or drank for dinner or lunch the day before. And that’s all they wanna talk about!
I guess my gut is used to certain things and a lot of “experimenting” usually ends up in some degree of discomfort. But honestly, “ food” is nothing more to me than getting thru the day.

We booked through our travel agent with Scenic. They’re Australian. You can YouTube them. With them everything is included. No special drink packages. Everything was first class. We took advantage of free airfare and they gave us each a damn nice carry on bag.

I will book through them the next time too.

You can correct me but I would always try to book in June in case there is a summer drought.

Yep. They just take care of everything for you. They all really seem to know what they’re doing.

On departure our Cruise Director had a system. His mom was a kindergarten teacher and taught him a color code system for his tags. Yellow is going onto Munich. Red flies out of Nuremburg. Blue goes to airport to fly to Amsterdam. It’s how she got students where they needed to go in Bulgaria. It was funny but awesome!

I get what your saying, but I can have a hamburger every day here in Cedar Rapids. I can't get ocean fresh seafood here, so I will have a lot of that while in the Outer Banks. Perhaps some Southern food as well.

We always try to go with local while traveling. We'll still have some Midwest comfort food though. Nothing wrong with a burger or pizza here and there. We found an unexpectedly great BBQ place in Cork, Ireland a few years ago and it was a welcome treat.

April/May or maybe September but I would err more toward October for river levels. But it can also
depend on the cruise line because some boats are better situated to handle lower river levels and some cruise lines will basically transfer everything from one boat to another while people are on excursions to continue the cruise. Others will go land based for the remaining cruise time.

You are going to not see too many people out there this time of year. We always hit Nags Head during season and it’s never too busy with lots of people up and down the beach road area.

Good places to eat up and down the beach road…Tortugas, Goom Bays, Awful Arthur’s, Nags Head Cafe, Tail of the Whale, then seafood markets to get fresh seafood like Austin’s which have great sandwiches - grouper, crab cake, mahi mahi, poboy while you are picking up your meal/catch for dinner or Sugar Creek with a seafood market that has fresh catch as well as menu similar to Austin’s. Love that area.
We arrived in Rodanthe NC today after a boring day of flying in from CR to Norfolk, and enduring the " it takes longer than you think" drive from the airport to our house. Went to Neptune's for dinner as it was really close. I'm wearing a pullover with a Tiger hawk on it. Guy at the next table is wearing an Iowa sweatshirt. Of course he is...we are everywhere. Fist bumps and "Go Hawks all around! Happens everywhere I travel.

How's the weather in Rodanthe this time of year?

Good god. Carnival is the worst. A 3 or 4 day Carnival is like an Oasis property in Cancun. Spring break with a bunch of unsupervised 18 year olds.
Honestly, all inclusive is great for the right people in the right destination. There are options that will fit almost anything you want to do. But quite frankly if you’re going to one of the more affluent islands they likely aren’t the best choice. Mostly because they don’t have many if any and they are so expensive that they aren’t worth it. Kind of like traveling Christmas week. You’re going to pay double to triple the cost for no better experience.
@3boysmom Its that time of year. I never understood the "Senior Trip with 50 other families" that they do now. Anyway, we experienced one of those at a RIU in Playacar. Kids from Texas, Iowa, and Portugal invaded the place we were staying at, they were like locusts. This was 15 years ago, we haven't been back over spring break since.

Anyway, you mentioned Oasis. Maybe you can add RIU to your list. For your reading/watching enjoyment......

I’m not a fan of RIU. The Palaces are marginally better. They have instituted a no Spring Break groups policy. But all that really means is that a parent has to travel with the kids and they can’t get a group contract. But obviously that’s not working.
I heard about that shooting yesterday. Oh how I wish people would stop buying drugs on vacation

Anything with an itinerary is a no-go for me. I don't want to be responsible for anything besides eating, drinking, swimming and sleeping. For those against all-inclusives, must have hit the wrong one. I have been to two, one south of Cancun, one north of Cancun. Both were absolutely unbelievable. Great food, booze and zero white trash factor.

Random non-political topic.... What types of vacations do you hate, that others seem to enjoy?

Currently in the Caribbean at a beach resort. I can't stand it. So damned boring. I'm good for about 3 days here. I can do one beach day, one fishing day, and on snorkeling/dive day. After that I get tried of the sweat, sand, and suntan lotion. I can roll around in the dirt and spray myself down with the hose and get the same effect during Midwest summers.

What say you HROT?

Cruises, all-inclusives, that sort of thing. Part of the joy of travel is the planning.

You and I could never be travel buddies. I need things to do, places to go, and a checklist. Plenty of time reserved for beers in the square but I want action items.

I'm fine with a beach every few years but my perfect trip is two weeks, a Sixt rental, and 4 eastern European cities with hotel reservations.

I only do limited tours in country, like going to Schonebrun (sp) palace in Austria.

I did a lot on my own, and my husband let me plan the itineraries.

I don’t like fat, loud mouth tourists from any country when I’m traveling. I like to get into the culture and mingle.

But, I was raised that way. My parents also always did it solo. I think living overseas makes it easier because you learn how to get along in other cultures.

Something a lot of our citizens could learn.

Pretty brazen for cartel to set up shop on resort grounds (probably started on the beach, but you get my drift). In any case, I get the Lets Go To Cancun thing, for college kids. I don't get the "Senior trip" thing at all. As for the drugs, Playa Mujeres is waaaay off the beaten path, which probably means less national guard/police presence.

The resort we stayed at in Playa Mujeres had three separate checkpoints on the way in with armed guards. They weren't armed with pea shooters either.

It was but it’s where all of the new development has been built. It’s quickly turning into resort after resort.
From what I was hearing yesterday the dealer was let onto the resort by employees. Who I’m sure were getting a kickback. I am surprised that they were brazen enough that everyone seemingly knew it was happening. But I’ve seen so many people who first thing they do on arrival is start looking for drugs. Usually weed. It’s not surprising that this becomes a consequence.

Gateway Murders.

They all come in from the beach. All of the beaches are public so they can’t stop them from being on the beach. Which is why when something like this happens it’s usually on the beach or in the water. This is unusual because they were actually on resort grounds. This particular resort is massive. It has 3 properties as part of the complex. They should take a massive hit.
