How to devise an effective game plan. Seriously our MO seems to be, don't show anything for the first 10-15 minutes of game time. Then adjust to how teams are attacking us. It sure seems like we consistently dig ourselves into a hole and then scramble to make it back. More often than not in our losses, the hole gets too deep and we don't have the horses to battle all the way back.

Of course every opponent poses different challenges, but IMHO in year #9 at Iowa Fran and his still original staff should have a much better idea of what to expect at the opening tip. I'm not calling for anyone's head, I'm just disappointed.

Definitely a fun season and a hell of a lot better than last year. We’re all going to miss Baer, but I look forward to seeing some of the new guys, Wieskamp a year older, and Pemsl/Nunge. Something tells me that Nunge and Wieskamp’s games are going to compliment each other nicely.

I can’t wait for next October/November.

I am not a fan of Iowa trying to play fast. It has been a recurring theme all B1G season; Iowa with 0 fast break points and opponents with 8-16 etc. As sketchy as Iowa's defense is they simply cannot afford to give up easy baskets when baskets aren't that hard to come by for opponents when the D is set.

Iowa is so much more effective on offense when the post guys get a couple touches and the ball moves. Take a break if it is there but otherwise get into the offense and make the other team work on defense. Pushing tempo works against cupcakes who don't get back on D or identify shooters but against everyone else leads to hurried shots and bad passes.

Charles Barkley said we switched to the zone too late. This seemed to happen in many games.

People seem to be in 2 camps today.

1 - we were one score from the Sweet 16 as a 10 seed

2 - if we played anywhere as well as we played in the second half today all year, we’d have a much better seed and could also be knocking on the door of the Sweet 16.

I see not wanting to take anything from the team today, but I agree we still have the same issues coming out of today’s games as coming in. We need play and coach like we did in the second half for a full 40 minutes.

Pure hindsight. Don't quit your day job.

I understand. But, I seriously doubt that the coaches were shocked by anything UT did. But, for 20 minutes, it looked like UT had 6 NBA players on the floor. I'm not sure how you game plan against that. In the 2nd half, UT looked like they knew they were going to win and coasted - and it almost cost them.

You can't simulate superior talent in practice. Just like the Cincy game, the Hawks looked bewildered for most of the first half. You can;t expect a coach to just "tell" his players that they will be over matched to start the game.

However, Iowa could have started in a zone defense to perhaps limit giving up early 3's by Tennessee.

IMO Fran made 1 huge strategic and 1 huge tactical mistake yesterday.

The strategic mistake was starting the game in man. There is no human being on this planet who would have believed we could match up with TN in man. Not only did it dig us a whole and get us in foul trouble, it put TN on an emotional high and demoralized our players for a 1/2. TN got anything it wanted offensively for the 1st 10 min of the game and forced us to panic on offense.

The tactical mistake was the last possession of regulation. We had fought back from a 21 pt 1/2 time deficit to tie the game with 20 sec left. At this point TN was staggering a bit and they were feeling ALL the pressure. At that point the last thing you want to do is go to overtime. This gives TN 3 minutes to gather themselves and regroup.

IMO we should have aggressively pressured the ball with the intent to either get a steal, foul, or force a quick shot. We want the ball with a chance to win in regulation. Sitting on D hoping to get a stop is passive. There was no way, by sitting back, we were going to get a stop with enough time to get a good shot of our own. In situations like the one we were in yesterday, you ALWAYS play to win or lose in regulation.

THIS^^^^^ I couldn't believe we didn't put pressure on the ball at the end!
