What happened during that 10 minute drought?

I think it was about 10 minutes that we went scoreless or close to it. Did Rutgers pick up their defense? And why did Garza get so few touches? We sorted of stalled and they got back in it.

But, had we continued on the pace we had set up to that point would we have approached 100?
Against a vaunted Rutgers defense? Would Luka have gotten mid 30's?

Remarkable that even with that drought we went for 85. I'm looking forward to the game when we are hitting on all cylinders for 40 minutes, hopefully it's when we are in the sweet 16.

Extremely physical game and Garza had difficulty getting open late in 2nd half with how many guys they had going at him big part of it, stalls out O when it isn't moving around or he isn't touching it.

Cj missed a couple open 3s too.

I swear from the moment we tipped off, that he seemed pretty hesitant to shoot. Hope he's still feeling well! Haven't heard anything so that is good....

As for the drought? 10 minutes of clock w/o scoring...can't say I recall that.

Yes he was off for him, still solid but yep and Weiskamp was missing open shots 1st half too.

More like 7 minutes but seemed like 10.

I assume nearly 10 min without a field goal maybe, I don't recall it being quite that long but there was a chunk of time for sure where we were making FTs only.

oh, ok that could be.

as long as we're putting point on the boards it's all good.

Wasn't necessarily scoreless as we made some free throws during this time. At the same time Garza needs to touch the ball period!!!!

Most Iowa went in the second half without scoring was about 2 minutes. When you get 85, in a college game, you don't have long scoring droughts.

Iowa led 76-67 with 4:13 left after Wieskamp free throws. Didn't score again until 2:13 when Frederick hit the layup. 10-0 run in under 2 minutes. Mostly due to 3 straight turnovers.

Agree. I think a contributing factor is that the rest of the team didn't adjust, mentally as much as anything. They spent too much time and effort trying to force it inside and everybody was passive in looking for their own shots and opportunities.

JT had a layup at 10: 29 and we did not have another FG till CJ made a layup at the 2 : 15 mark , there were freethrows .

We were so lucky the Rutgers guard split our defense on a drive to the hoop in the last minute and blew a layup.

It's planned defense. When the guy expects the most resistance let him through scot free and he is so surprised he misses the shot.

At some point Fran had to sub and I believe (would have to rewatch) he tried to give Luka a quick blow, and Pemsl had sat the entire second half. (Not complaining). Like someone had said earlier, I thought it was when we just went up 9. Kreiner has been having a really good season off the bench, but him and Pemsl together on D are a disaster. Also took out Joe T for Evelyn, and Evelyn just wasn’t ready. It quickly unraveled on us. Luckily we got our composure back and hit some big shots. Super physical game with a very thin lineup.

As someone said earlier, guys were tired during that stretch. That was the first time I'd ever seen Garza tired--I didn't know it was possible!--and he had more trouble establishing position during that stretch. Plus, Rutgers was playing frenetically and cutting off passing lanes really well, anticipating where and how Iowa was trying to get Garza the ball. He had very few tocuhes during that stretch because of all of that. That stretch told me a lot about why Rutgers is rated so highly defensively.

Also, to the people saying no more Pemsl, Iowa has to play him some just to give Garza and other guys a breather, especially if one of the guys is in foul trouble (McCaffery). Every starter except Connor played well over 30 minutes. Having a shortened 8-man rotation has helped Iowa in some ways, but it could take a toll over the 20-game B10 season. Pemsl had a poor game, but he's not always going to play poorly like that any more than Joe T. is always going to play poorly (obviously). Pemsl just didn't match up well against Rutgers front line and, honestly, it's hard for guys who get few minutes game-in and game-out to get into a rhythm, especially a team like Rutgers that gets after it physically and frenetically on defense. Go back and watch the last ten minutes of the game again--Garza was TIRED! Who could blame him, he was hustling like a madman against a really, really physical frontline that threw a lot of different defensive looks at him.

At what point did Garza reach the 28 point mark. It seems to me that he rarely touched the ball and didn't take a shot , nor a free throw, the last 8-10 minutes.

It was under the 10 minute mark, but not by much. Rutgers was playing insanely aggressive at that point to get back into the game which is why Iowa shot so many free throws down the stretch.

The game announcers had a graphic regarding players with multiple 30 point games in a season and it seemed like 30 points for Luka was a foregone conclusion, after all he already had 28. I was hoping that he might get to 40 again.

I think Fran could use a timely timeout in the second half to get a break for the players we tend to end the game with leftover timeouts we had two at the end of this game unused.

I think Eternal said it very well. I think we all like that Fran has kind of been forced to go with the smaller rotation but when you get into such a physical game at some point you need a rest. Pemsl has actually been pretty good lately and we need probably 6-8 minutes a half from him. Last night was rough for him. Evelyn has been really steady as well off the bench but he struggled last night. When that happens Fran has nowhere to go.

Revsin in the studio made a point of the 7 minute drought in field goals but I believe during that time we made a number of free throws. I did not go back to check the recording, I think that was rhe case.

At the same time Garza needs to touch the ball period!!!!

With the 3 point baskets Luka made, get him the ball beyond the arc if he's covered inside. That was really my only complaint about the game is that it seems like Garza didn't touch the during the final 10 minutes.

Agree,.. During this dry stretch we passed up a lot of really good early shots from outside and then either turned it over trying to force it inside or missed on a bad last second three point attempt... We were tired and Rutgers defense was really good...

Sometimes winning is just a matter of not making mistakes. Rutgers was in that position after trailing most of the second half due to a number of Iowa mistakes in that stretch (Kriener fumbling ball OOB on wide open dunk, Evelyn charging in a 3-on-1, Evelyn throwing it away, 5-second call inbounding the ball, etc.).

If the Rutgers player makes the layup, maybe head to OT. Maybe Iowa scores on the last possession to win it. We don't know. It's what makes basketball interesting. Credit to Iowa for making all the big plays after going behind 77-76. Frederick forces the offensive rebound off the missed FT. Then makes a tough layup. Rutgers misses the 3, Iowa rebounds. Wieskamp makes the 3, Iowa now up 4. Rutgers scores, then stops Iowa and gets the rebound. Then Young misses the layup. Iowa rebounds, Conor makes 4 FT's in a row and game over.

FYI, Iowa’s FG drought was from the 10:29 mark after Joe T’s layup until CJ’s layup at the 2:15 mark. Iowa hit 7 FT and gave up 18 points during that stretch.

Two words. Cordell pemsl. I like the guy, but he was terrible. And I swear if that announcer says he’s our best passer one more time.
