I'm not saying he should be the guy, but a few years ago he was the hot name for someone deserving a promotion to a major conference school. His record is solid and he has had middling success in the NCAA. Just wondering why no love now?

Maybe another example of a coach who's stayed in one place too long. Drake and ISU (and maybe even St Thomas?) probably has made it harder to recruit?

Iowa can't have him. :)

Yeah, it's a mixed bag of success with Jake the last several years. A couple of conference championships, but hasn't been back to the dance (yes, the Covid year should have been, but can't really use that as an excuse any more). He's well liked in the Cedar Valley, great with boosters and has raised a ton of money in a hard place to do that. I think he could be successful at Iowa but I doubt he's enough of a splash hire these days to move the needle for Iowa fans.

He'd be well liked by players, fans, the media and just about everybody. But when it comes to the game, he's going to do things his way and I could see that being a source of frustration if success doesn't come immediately.

He had opportunities after '10 Sweet 16 run but I'm guessing he saw what happened with McDermott and thought..... "Maybe I can enjoy life living in a good community at $500K/year".
I think that's what his raise was after the run. Now he's up to $900K.
People are driven by different things. Why did Hoiberg leave his home town and school and try the NBA? He failed miserably and came back to college.

I appreciate Ben for what he's done at UNI. He's a good coach and good for the community. He was :44 way from taking UNI to 2 Sweet 16s.
That '20 team was solid with Green, Berhow, Phyfe, Carter & Pickford.

He's still at UNI but hasn't made the ncaa tournament since 2016. Only 2 postseason appearances since then (including this year) according to wiki:

Looks like covid cheated him out of an ncaa bid judging by their 2020 record.
They won the valley with an NBA player on roster and lost in the first round of the MVC. Only team to ever do that.

“Cheated him out”. He doesn’t deserve the benefit of the doubt.

How they lost a 12 point lead in less than 40 seconds is the most baffling and biggest choke job in the history of basketball.

Like Farley , it’s over. How long of a farewell tour do you want us the only question.

Too soon. Still too soon.

And I can count several uncalled A&M fouls in that 40 seconds. Couldn't inbound to save our life, but it seems like the officials got caught up in the excitement of it all and forgot to officiate. Jepserson's heave to beat Texas was about as good as it gets, and then to have that. Pain. So much pain.

Transfer Portal has also hurt teams like UNI as they struggle to keep their best players. I think ISU got one of them this past season.

It’s refreshing to see a guy where it isn’t all about the money 💰.

Nate Heise, yep. Also lost Bowen Born to CSU.

That's just the way it is anymore. But it makes you really appreciate a guy like Tytan Anderson for sticking around.

Panthers play tonight, 8pm at SMU in the NIT if anyone is looking for something to watch.

Small school can’t really build. You have to win right away because the big schools will poach talent away with NIL.

I never blame a kid for taking the money, it’s once in a lifetime cash and NBA odds are about zero for all players.

What channel/network? TIA

It's pretty clear he'll be a UNI lifer. I've heard he likes his situation and ain't interested in chasing the really big bucks or the really big pressure. He's a rare person who seems to appreciate what he has and understands there's more to life than money. At least that's what I've heard, and the evidence would seem to support that view. Not that anyone gives a damn about facts or evidence anymore.

Good coach but some clunkers
1- 2016 12 point lead with 35 seconds left to go to sweet 16. Largest choke in history
2- 2019 Largest halftime lead ever lost in MVC championship game.
3- 2020 First and only conference Number 1 seed to lose to 8 seed.
4- I believe first 3 seed to lose to 11 seed this year.

Probably but he also wouldn’t be a real candidate anywhere now.

Good coach, I think he’s in a bad situation now, and I don’t think he’ll have any sustained success at UNI again.

Prime example of why mid major coaches need to strike while the iron is hot if they want to move up. There’s always going to be up and comers that are younger and likely cheaper to hire.

But not everyone wants to move up and he’s seemed comfortable there.
Sure, and he would have failed in 2-3 years then probably coaching D-2 somewhere. I think it was openly stated back then, he was very happy with his situation

He's got 11 players returning on his roster next year, which speaks highly of the culture he's built. A practice facility is finally getting built, and he makes a decent salary in a very livable area. His son is on the team (but rarely plays). He's got it pretty good.

Once the Dome renovation gets done and the practice facility is up - they need to work on a refresh of the interior of McLeod. I hope UNI's AD sticks around, she seems to know what she is doing.

I remember watching that game thinking the refs let several obvious fouls go on A&M, then called a couple of touch fouls on UNI when A&M got the lead. A&M played the ISU/MSU defense and it worked for them.

It is amazing how so many people fail to realize that the coaches are not the ones that are actually playing the game. Truth is, the coaches do not have nearly as much influence on the game as most think. There are great coaches, those who can elevate the play of team over the individual talent, good coaches that can win with talent but lose without it and bad coaches that can lose even if they have talent. But the bottom line is that you cannot make chicken salad out of chicken s**t, and even great coaches cannot win if they don’t have the players.

BJ is a good coach.
