What if the Hawks rack up a win or two in the BTT, and maybe 1+ in whatever post season tournament they are in, and Beth decides to keep Fran? How do you think the fan base will react? Will attendance continue to suffer next year? Will the Hawks do better and make the ncaa tournament? Will basketball NIL remain minimal?

I know some on here are saying he is gone-it’s a done deal. But is it really? I am not convinced.

One thing is certain….if Fran is back this board will explode! Especially if (when) McCollum is hired elsewhere.

He's at the point where you have to either extend him or fire him.

You can't just run the contract out.

I highly doubt he's getting extended but it's Iowa so you never know. Incompetence is kind of their thing.

He will not be coaching past the BTT unless he wins it. He'll be let go prior to Iowa stumbling into the Crown or NIT or whatever other garbage 2nd rate tourneys they have now. As soon as he has officially been eliminated from Sweet 16 contention, he gone. There would be an interim coach for any postseason play (if Iowa accepts bid).

According to Iowa media podcast the attendance is worse than the Lick years so keeping him in no way will improve attendance

This is what I think, or want to believe, anyway.

Bringing back Fran next year only continues the slow bleed out of attendance, etc. As for the boards, it wouldn't be pretty around here.

If Fran is back….he has a pretty good recruiting class.

Hawks could be better next year but will still suck on defense.

Probably punch a ticket to the bs Las Vegas tournament.

Yippee

My guess is Fran has another year no matter what happens in BTT. I would be shocked but pleased if they won 2 games in BTT. Fran is usually good for a 1st round loss, so that is what my projection is. IF Dix and Freeman both transfer out, that is bigger/more important knob than Fran status. Would those two stay if they new coach sold them on a better change in trajectory for program? The AD needs to ask.

I am ready for a change. I don't think next year Fran is any better than this year Fran. Next year they have to let him go. It would be really stupid to extend Fran's contract and guarantee more money to this guy beyond what is already guaranteed to 2028. He's an old man and NIL/Portal and idea of playing defense have passed him by.

IF he is retained next year, he needs to guard the inbounder when the ball is under their basket. If he's not retained next year, he can start doing it in the B10 Tourney in a few days.

So you think Beth will give him an extension?

Or they're going to stand pat with a coach with only 2 more years on his contract? This would be pure negligence and seems even less likely than an extension.

I can't see how a person who is in charge of a big ten athletic department could go with either one of those choices.

The fan base will continue to react with apathy. Actually, maybe more. This program doesn’t have a pulse under him.

In business we have the sunk cost fallacy. Don’t throw good money after bad, just because you’ve invested the previous money. There is no winning future with Fran, so time to move on and invest our money in some new future.

beth had the balls to fire the son of the dean of cfb coaches against his stated wishes. and this was despite KF and son leading the team to a record setting ~10 wins per season (good for top-3) in the conference over the previous 5 seasons.
so unless a lot of people are clamoring to retain fran it's probably over the instant we get kicked out in the final 4 by Duke per usual

And after a year like this one, a Fran extension would seem like a tough sell to the fan base.

Attendance is suffering.. Want to finish killing it off? Extend Fran.

I can't see it.

Don’t tease us.

Fran will be back. Excitement building with new recruits. The pre Big10 games fans will show up and cheer. If the Hawks lay eggs, then the apathy will start up again & Fran's seat will be hotter than hot & if he misses the NCAA's he'll be gone.

Most on here will blame it on Brock Harding, isn't that right LD. not saying it can't happen, but I'm in the corner that the decision has already been made and the wheels have been set in motion not to long ago. Watched the last 2 Drake games and I'm sold on McCollum. He can bring Bennett Stirtz along with him and any other underclassman he can convince to come to Iowa.
Wouldn't mind seeing the invigorated student section in white shirts and gold ties, it would be refreshing....

EXACTLY. Iowa fans act like it's unheard of to get rid of a coach with a few years on their contract... If you are waiting until they only have 2 years left, then you are doing it wrong. Good luck to any coach recruiting like that.

An AD that is worthy of the job needs to be looking ahead 4 years. Is Fran who you want coaching here 4 years from now? If not, it's time to cut bait and get this train moving.
