What if Iowa won the national championship?

Imagine that.

If you think about it, this year is probably the best shot at it we have ever had?

I think 1985 was our best shot. We just had to beat tOSU just like probably this year and then win the Rose Bowl. Unlike this year though, I think we were favored in all of those games, maybe wrong about the tOSU game.

I'm not so sure. I love this team, but we've definitely had more talent in the past. With the way the Big Ten West is set up now, I can see us having more shots than ever before.

Yeah, that year was awesome, although I was only 10, so the details on the season are a bitch sketchy to me.

I remember exactly where I was and what I was doing for that FG win over Michigan though.

I suppose if we are counting basketball as well that final four team would have to be thrown into the conversation.

I am not buying the talent argument. How do you know? A lot of the kids producing are sophomores and juniors. I think CJ is the most talented QB we have had under Ferentz - that's a big one. Iowa is very deep and dare I say has a lot of talent at RB. There will be OL and DL drafted to the NFL JJ is a beast.. The LB position is looking very good and is very young. I think the secondary is the most talented under Ferentz. The fact that Iowa has done so well with all of the injuries doesn't back up talent assessment.

NFL Talent on the D-line, and O-line. NFL potential in CJ, 4 pretty good RB's, a whole stable of talented TE's, a talented kicker, NFL talent all over the defense, decent enough talent at WR, we aren't bad by any means. Iowa has shown depth at multiple positions.

If Iowa won the NC it would be bad for my team since Iowa would have beaten them. But it would be good, no great, for the conference.

Agreed. Everyone looks at the 2009 team and sees, with the advantage of perspective 6 years later, which guys made the NFL. Who would have argued in 2009 that Karl Klug would make the NFL, let alone be in his 5th year in 2015?

There are a lot of guys like Niemann, Jewell, Mabin, James Daniels, George Kittle, etc., who could end up in the NFL, when it may not be so obvious right now.

And a 15-0 season will make their NFL odds much better. :)

Guys, Lone Clone is 100% right. We won a split national championship in 1958. The College Football Writers of America voted us #1. We are working on our 2nd national championship.

I think its fair to say we don't have a lot of day 1 draft talent. We may have a lot of late-round, try-hard talent. The one thing this team has going for it is pretty good talent distribution throughout the roster. We don't have any really weak units. The LBs upped their game, the DL lacks depth but is hanging in there, the O-line came along, and our top WRs are pretty decent.

Well, since Iowa won it in '58, I wouldn't say this year is the best shot Iowa's ever had at it.
They won 1 poll out of about 12 taken. This year will be legit. This is no doubt the best Hawkeye team of my lifetime. Need to finally cash it in.

09 team was crazy, this team is crazier. Though 09 had the 2 best receivers in Iowa history on the same team.

I was thinking specifically of the 2002 squad. CJ is amazing, but Banks was a Heisman runner-up! Our receivers were probably better in 2002, but that's maybe close. RB we're possibly better today, definitely deeper. But everywhere else, both lines, linebackers, and defensive backfield were hands down better in 2002. Take that squad and put it in this year, especially with the other talent I see in the top 10, I think we run the table with no questions asked.

Please don't take this as bad-mouthing this year's squad! They have a chance to do something amazing. But as a whole, I think the 2002 squad was the best in the Ferentz era.

I'd put the 2002 team as the best I've seen. They lost to ISU because they didn't realize yet how good they really were, and Banks with his thumb issue. They lost to USC because despite how good Iowa was, USC may in fact have just been better. Plus of what we heard from KF and how he felt he didn't practice well enough for the game. Despite that I think few teams could have beat Iowa as soundly as USC did, or even at all. Including thug U and the Ohio State that year.

Give 2004 team a running game, and they may be the best, or have Shonn Greene and a healthy Hampton come back in 2009 and they may have also been the best.......I'm confusing myself. Actually though, I'd say 2009 was still the best. Stanzi stays healthy and they probably win out.

I get your point, but It wasn't a poll -- it was the Grantland Rice trophy that the Football Writers of America give to their national champions. Pretty legit.

It's not like it was the Hills, Iowa Rotary Club outstanding achievement in the field of excellence award.

Our best shot IMO was 2002. Up 24-7 at half to a not great ISU team and we know how that played out. Also, couple that with OSU pulling freaking magical wins out of their ass all year to get the championship game. We win that game and OSU loses...which they should have 3-4 times. Still cant believe they got that 4th and whatever 50 yard play to win at Purdue. Here are their final games that year.

Those two things happen and we are at least playing for it.

I am out on the defensive comparisons. The 2002 defense got lit up in several games. Several.

If Iowa won the national championship it would probably mean they beat Ohio State, and 2 other no loss or 1 loss highly ranked teams to end the season. If they won all 3 of those games they would deserve to be national champions and the world would see that at that point.
I love Rotary Club smack! I guess I didn't mean it wasn't a title, just that the AP, coaches and a bunch of others named LSU national champs (even though they only played against teams comprised of what George Jefferson would call "honkies"). Instead of 'legit' I should have written 'undisputed'.

1985 was Iowa's best shot at winning a national championship even after Ohio St. loss. Everything fell Iowa's way during the bowl season except Iowa lost to UCLA. Sporitng news had four helmets on its cover before the New Years bowl games saying one of these will be national champs. Iowa was one of the four. I still have that Sporting News.

They won the poll that was conducted after the bowl games. The AP and UPI polls were not. And I don't think any other poles had the legitimacy of those three.

I agree 1958 counts IMO. If Alabama and ND claim all of their NC, why can't Iowa claim their one?
