My wife and I would always go to Universal. You can't beat the deal. Stay at one night at one of the three hotels and you can you use your room key as a unlimited fast pass, early park entrance for the Harry Potter area and walk or boat ride to the parks. We always went around Christmas so couldn't do the water rides. Albeit, I am curious what Volcano Bay is like.

For me, there is not comparison between Disney and Universal. I really hate going to Disney because it is always overcrowded (even on a random weekday in Oct) and the lines absolutely suck. Plus the rides do not compare to Universal. I will probably check out the star wars park sometime. Even the line and waits are far better at Universal when you are walking inside the Harry Potter castles.

Favorites Universal rides:
Revenge of the Mummy (USO)
Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man (IOA)
Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts (USO)
The Incredible Hulk Coaster (IOA)
Jurassic Park (IOA)
The Tower ride next to Hulk
Transformers (USO)

Hagrid's Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure (IOA) -- almost vomited with combination of screen moving and being on an actual ride.
Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit (USO) --getting too old for that drop
Men in Black: Alien Attack (USO) -- haven't been on
Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey (IOA) --too new
Popeye and Bluto's Bilge Rat Barges (IOA) --water ride

I guess my one quibble would be your placement of space mountain. It was the second best ride at Disney at the time (pre Star Wars and avatar) behind Everest.

I got to thinking about this and realized that I have never been to Disney world.
Went to Epcot center with my wife(you don't want a pic)
Took my parents to Epcot center. And then my mother in-law on another occasion.
So I have been to Epcot center 3 times and still no Disney World.
At my age now I don't need all the kids running all around me so guess that won't happen.

Volcano Bay is off the charts good. It was only open until 5pm when I went. It got super crowded around noon and we were only able to get in 2 more rides after that. They also let hotel guests in early.

I like Universal better if I’m just going for a day for the rides. For a three day or longer vacation Disney is way better IMO. Better food, nicer hotels, better staff, more activities outside the park, and easy transportation.

The one with the shortest line

I was the king of avoiding lines at Disney. My wife thought I was nuts the first time, when I spent the weeks leading up preparing a strategy to get everything in with minimal waiting in line. But when we spent the entire week relaxing and enjoying ourselves, and she saw the misery that everyone else seemed to be suffering, she agreed it was worth the planning.

We did research but you only get 3 fast passes. Or at least you did at the time. So we stood in line for 75 minutes for a sucky ass ride like the 7 dwarves. What are your pro tips?

- Get there early, like 45 minutes before the park opens. You will ride a bunch in that first hour.
- get FP for 11am, 12noon and 1pm if possible.
- Once your 3 Fast Passes are done you can get more on the app if they are still available.
- Understand how the crowds flow. Everyone starts at either Space Mountain/Buzz or Pirates of the Caribbean. Those rides are shorter later in the day.

Things have probably changed, because those years there were no limits, but you could only have one fast pass at a time. Let’s day you got a FP for Space Mt with a 10am to 11am window. You couldn’t get another FP until 10. But a couple of them secretly didn’t have that limit.

There were also common times when some rides didn’t have as long of lines, so you basically charted out your day around the FP. And you always arrive an hour before the official opening time, because typically they actually open a half hour early. The first hour and a half you could go on ride after ride with no lines.

I can’t remember everything. I do remember at Magic Kingdom we would also immediately make lunch reservations at Liberty Square Tavern for 11:00am. It was air conditioned and had clean, private bathrooms. By eating early we had a relaxing, cool lunch break.

It also helped that my wife and daughter didn’t like roller coasters and such, so we would get FP using their tickets, then my son and I could go on twice as many rides.

I actually had an entire Orlando strategy. Theme park one day, wrap it up by 3 or 4 in the afternoon then cook dinner in the condo and chill. Relax by the pool the next day and go out to eat or a dinner show at night. Repeat the every other day schedule for the trip.

I haven't been since I was a kid in late 90s early 2000s. Pirates of the Caribbean was always my favorite. Created a love of pirates that I still have.

I hope they didn't ruin it with the success of the movie.

When we went a couple spring breaks ago, we got advice from friends who have gone several times to book fast passes 6 months out. We also got some advice (and there are website and apps out there that can help) on how to strategize fast passes. You can often get on one or two of the popular rides by taking advantage of the early-open hours for hotel guests. Those apps and websites do a pretty good job of anticipating normal load putting you in a pretty good situation to avoid lines. We waited in a few long ones, but that was really kept to a minimum.

I believe last time we were the the ride was closed for a re-do; presumably to mimic the movies.

The ride is the same with the addition of Johnny Depp Capt Sparrow. The difference was a lot more Pirates movie merchandise at the exit.

Go early
Don’t eat lunch at noon
Stay late - lines get smaller and really start opening up during and after the light parade

Finally, it must be crystal clear to all family members - keep up or you’ll be cut loose. No stragglers. No exceptions.

Never mind wrong thread.

I’m a coaster fanatic and a history buff, so Space Mountain does deserve some extra love as the first completely enclosed indoor roller coaster, but much better roller coasters have come out since. It’s got a max speed of 28 mph and a max drop of 26 ft. Even the “kiddie coaster” Hippogriff at Universal has a drop of 28 ft and the same speed of 28.5 mph. So essentially it’s a not quite as good Hippogriff enclosed in a building. And that semidarkness does make things seem more intense which is why with the history I have it much higher than the slightly better on its own Hippogriff. But the Mummy has a max speed of 45 mph helped along by three magnetic launchers and a max drop of 40 ft plus much better theming and show elements. So Space Mountain can’t really be that high either. I have it one slot ahead of Dudley DoRight which while it’s a water coaster it has a max speed of 45 mph and a drop of 75 ft and the water (especially in Florida where in summer it’s a great break from the heat) is just as good of a Schtick as being indoors.

Fair points but do have data on the Gs? Those are pretty thrilling when you are winding down in a spiral, IIRC.

For comparison purposes here’s the Hulk

And the Mummy

Note that the spikes appear bigger on Space Mountain because the scale is different, the others go to 5gs. The other thing to keep in mind is that humans tolerate negative g changes less than positive so the big spikes to almost zero g on the Mummy is going to feel much more impactful and give you a big sense of “air time”.

Damn the Hulk pulls almost 5 Gs! Sad it was under repair when we visited.

Flight of passage is awesome. Only ride that if I won the lottery I would want to build in my house.

Everest was a blast we got lucky in November when we were there and got it go on it 10 times in a row. The kids were losing their minds.

for nostalgia though it’s space mountain. The smell and the music they play take me back to when I was a kid and went there with my grand parents.

Crazy story. When I was there in November I was talking to a prospective business client from Boston and told him I was at Disney world and couldn’t talk long. He said “hey my brother is at Disney today”. I said “well actually I’m at Animal Kingdom” and he said “pretty sure that’s where my brother is as well”. So it get on the raging river ride that I was in line for when I was talking to him and notice the family on the ride is all wearing Boston gear like Celtics and patriots. So I say “this is going to sound crazy but are you related Jared A?” The husband and wife look at each other nervously and say “yes why?” What are the chances?!

Epcot is in Disney world. You must be thinking of the magic kingdom, which is the park with the iconic castle.

Yea you are right now that I think of it.
We could take the rail to the ride side but always went the side where all the small villages were.

Are any of the choices part of the new Star Wars Experience? Where whole trip is a role playing theme and you stay in a space ship cabin

I'm trying to talk my fiancee (no pics) into doing that for a weekend during our next stay. Hard to justify the cost, but the experience looks like it's worth a billion dollars. Have you done this?

I have not. Have not been to Disney in a long time. Work colleague has three young kids and went recently and looked into the Star Wars experience. He didn’t do it but did the diligence and didn’t think it was right fit. Money was a concern but he said if his family LOVED SW it did look and sound amazing.

What's the story of the "secret" bar that was on the grounds of Disney World BITD? I read about it once a long time ago. Is it still around?

My wife and I did it this spring. It's pretty friggin' awesome, and I'm not a super Star Wars nerd. It's all inclusive and totally occupies the entire time you're there. We thought of it as more like a choose your own adventure story. You pick the tasks you complete, and pretty much everything you do goes towards how you interface with the story. You spend 1 day in Hollywood Studios, and you can go wherever you want, but we never left the Star Wars area. You also get fast passes to the front of Rise of the Rebellion and Smuggler's Run. And priority reservations to build a light saber (DO IT) and a droid (less good than a light saber). The whole experience is top notch, the food is AWESOME, and you literally are on the go from 7AM to 10 PM. Yeah, it's really expensive, but it's pretty worth it once. Oh, and don't go on youtube and watch all the videos about it, because they'll spoil the whole thing. The awe and surprise is half the fun.

Yeah we’ll probably do it, that sounds amazing. Is the light saber included or extra? It’s the nice one, right?

There's a lot of stuff I haven't done yet at Hollywood Studios, namely all of the Toy Story Land rides, and Smuggler's Run. I've done Rise of the Resistance in Disneyland, though. I think. Whichever one was open first, I did it.

Need to do Guardians of the Galaxy and Remy's ride in EPCOT.

Pretty sure I've done every thing in MK. Not sure about the new kiddie rides in whatever Toon Town became, though.

Splash Mountain. But imo, WDW can’t really be judged like other amusement parks. And their rides shouldn’t be judged the same way we would roller coasters at Six flags or Cedar Point.

It’s the whole package of the complete experience. It’s an artistic quality that nobody ever quite matches. It’s like how public buildings and universities often have 1-2% of building construction costs dedicated to buying art. It doesn’t have a functional purpose, it’s part of the whole aesthetic that makes the building look more valuable than the sum of its parts. I feel like most every ride and experience at WDW is like that.
