From the Gazette:

Connor and Jordan Bohannon had some things to say Tuesday about officiating they didn’t particularly care for in Sunday’s 67-65 loss at Indiana and in certain other recent games.

Connor was asked Tuesday if he has to play differently based on who is officiating the game.

The question came in the wake of Iowa’s 67-65 loss at Indiana on Sunday in which star center Luka Garza picked up two early fouls, and in which Fran McCaffery was called for a controversial technical foul.

“For me,” Connor McCaffery said, “there’s one guy in particular that we’ve had in a couple of these games where I feel we haven’t had some things go our way. And I know pretty much everyone else feels the same way. I don’t want to say any names.”

Bo Boroski officiated Iowa’s last two games, three days apart. The only other ref who has worked two of the Hawkeyes’ last four games is Paul Szelc, those being the Jan. 21 game at Illinois and Sunday at Indiana.

“There were some just insane foul calls going back to the Illinois game (Jan. 21), ridiculous foul calls and non-foul calls in Ohio State (Feb. 4 at Iowa),” Connor McCaffery said. “I didn’t think Ohio State was nearly as bad with the refs at all, for the record.

“The Indiana game was pretty nuts in my opinion. ... We put ourselves in a position to win, a lot of things could have still gone our way. But I think with maybe a different ref on a crew that you probably see a different outcome.

“I will say the technical foul (on Fran McCaffery Sunday after Connor McCaffery got called for a foul with 10:16 left in the first half) is ridiculous. That is what I’ll say to defend my dad. That was one of the more-insane technicals I’ve ever seen. It was a horrible call. It was a charge. The kid pushed me down, I’ll say that. It was a charge.

“But to then turn around and call a technical when he didn’t swear, he didn’t run out on the court. … It was an awful technical foul call.”

Fran McCaffery said “You gotta be kidding me!” If he said anything worse, it wasn’t audible from the front row of the Assembly Hall media area that was close enough to the Hawkeyes’ sideline to hear him.

“I think that’s something that probably goes back a couple games,” Connor McCaffery said. “Refs aren’t supposed to do that. They’re supposed to have short-term memory.”

Bohannon said “I think there’s definitely some background bias with some refs with Coach McCaffery. Coach McCaffery literally said ‘Are you kidding me?’ and he gets ‘T’d up for that.

“That’s what you’re getting ‘T’d up for now? I don’t want to see what basketball’s going to be like in a couple years if that’s the case.”

This doesn't seem like a good move for a team that's lost 4 of their last 5......I'm sure the officials appreciate hearing 'what' they're supposed to do' from C.MCaffery......Nothing like putting a target on your back....Blaming the officials for blowing 10pt leads is not very becoming.......

Its interesting, because they're not wrong and we all see it. Sure, there are plays that are bad, and performance by players and coaches that lead to the losses, but to say that the officials don't have an effect, and Bo in particular, is silly. The one that sticks in my head is Murray's 5th which he got on a rebound, where he went nearly straight up and made very, very little contact with anyone. It was a total joke of a call.
The coaches and players are responsible for their play and mistakes, why shouldn't the refs be? And if the B1G office takes notice, or at least takes a peek at this, then perhaps it's a good thing in the long run.

Like father Like son. It’s always someone else’s fault, no leadership or responsibility taken.

Why would any official respect Fran with the way he routinely acts? He regularly goes ballistic and acts abusive over calls that are obviously correct. Any ref is going to grow tired of his act.

This was Fran after a 20 point blowout loss on the road two years ago in a game that was never even close:

Boohoo. Play the game. Make some shots and don’t miss bunnies. Officials suck, always have. Every time plays with shit officiating.

I didnt see the game until late second half... Early Sunday was hard to catch, but who gave Mccaffrey the technical? If it was Boroski, I can think of atleast 4 times including an ejection he was a part of. After that many incidents it sure seems to me it's either personal or he just sucks at the job. Mccaffrey is a hothead but he can't be wrong all of the time. There are plenty of other guys we see regularly doing these games who are terrible, but no one else seems to be giving them at a similar proportional rate. If they did he'd have a hundred in his time at Iowa.

I'll add to this:

Boohoo. Play the game. Make some shots and don't miss bunnies..

Don't sit your best player 12 straight minutes.

Let go of the nepotism.

Coach a little defense.

Put your quicker defenders on the floor when the only meaningful possession left in the game has your team needing to defend.

I will also agree with all of that.

I forget the whole story but wasn't Teddy V banned from doing Iowa games at the request of Iowa?

And Teddy V is no longer contracted with the B1G, correct? And that was because of bias & horrible officiating.

Why can't the same be done w/ Bo?

Maybe it puts a target on the zebras back that they are being watched, ?
Who blamed them for the loss. Is it possible to be critical of someone but not place blame for your own failures?

Serious question.... is there a review board or person for the BIG 10 that coaches can send complaints to? I would think that would keep officiating honest. I know the NFL has a scoring system for their officials that makes them accountable for their calls and non-calls each game. Anybody know?

Thanks guys.....you just signed Iowa’s death warrant with the officials for the rest of the season.

How stupid. Other than wearing an "Our Officials Suck" t-shirt I'm not sure of anything they could have done which would qualify as more stupid.....from our 5th year senior and coach's kid - presumed leaders of our team.....explains a lot.

If anybody is officiating based on their feelings towards one team/coach or the other, then that person already sucks at their job and needs to be gone. One of the most basic principles of officiating is impartiality, which unfortunately seems to be a quality that is lacking amongst Big Ten officials

I know Barta has sent in tape to the B1G in the past

Btw, for those who haven't, or won't listen to the audio, according to the guys on KXNO this morning, it sounds like the tone of what they are saying is different than how it reads on paper, and thus they didn't have as much of a problem with what Connor and Jordan said.

Just sayin........

Not saying its a good look for players to be commenting publicily, and it will probably cost us down the road, but having said that, your kidding right? Fran acts like Mother Teresa compared to guys like Izzo. You can't tell me there is NO bias from the refs toward certain coaches, because its obvious. It would be nice if the league stepped in and addressed this but we all know they won't........

There is a 2 tier standard with coaches in the big ten. The ones that can get away with stuff when it comes to the refs, and the ones that can't. You earn your way into the upper AND lower tiers. We all know where Fran is...and he ain't getting out soon and comments like this just throw another anchor around his neck.

Remember when Fran first got here, where when they were trying to turn things around, the officiating sucked & he was not gonna sit back & allow Iowa to be screwed over by opposing coaches & officials?

He fought for his guys then & he does now.

There's definitely bias for certain coaches and certain programs.

I heard a portion (most?) of Connor's comments, and what I heard was very calm and 'respectful'. He was answering a question and didn't sound like he was whining at all. I didn't hear Jordan's commenting audio and there may have been more of Connor's. Based only on what I heard, I would agree with what you're saying.

How does Izzo spend 40 minutes badgering the officials and walks away unscathed? Double standard here. Yeah I watched his great defense beat PSU last night with a forearm shove into the back of the PSU players all night and then a guy goes over the top on the missed FT and no call. Iowa needs to hand check on defense every night out just to see the discrepancy in haw the game is called...

Is there any way to listen online? Link?

Have you ever watched Izzo? Or for that matter, 90% of the other coaches in college? McCaffery is tame compared to most. Yes he may throw a few F bombs around but I guarantee he isn't in the minority there.

People pick and choose clips based on what they want to side with. It's edited to fit the narrative. Then they go on about what was really meant and what the person was actually thinking. Many just assume the narrator is correct. Pretty common these days.

If there is one you sure wouldn't know it...... o_O

When you lose and you have no answers......you blame the refs.

Bohannon said “I think there’s definitely some background bias with some refs with Coach McCaffery. Coach McCaffery literally said ‘Are you kidding me?’ and he gets ‘T’d up for that.

Did he say 'Are you kidding me?' or did he say 'Are you f-cking kidding me'? Big difference.

If EVERY team thinks the refs are out to get THEM, then that proves that the refs are out to get NO ONE.

You ever watch how Izzo whines, pouts and shouts at officials..Then there was Bo Ryan..Are you supposed to just sit there and take it and ask 'sir may I have another!'

All we need now is McCabe to bang someone’s girlfriend or someone bang his (can’t recall how that all went down, order) and we’ll have a nice cozy familiar cherry on top of this poo pie slide.
