What made you become a Hawkeye?

This is a funny story. When I was 9 (due to an expanding family), my dad made me move downstairs in our house. He gave me a broken radio to keep me company. Only 1040 and Z would come in on this radio. None of my family were Hawk fans. All of my family are now Hawk fans. I went. My bro is a grad and my daughter graduates this year. All over a broken radio.

let's see........
it was something about Nebraska, UCLA, and Michigan in the span of less than six weeks.
I was totally blown away, but the details and the year escape me, though.

Parents divorced when I was 4. Both had season tickets for football. Went to all the home games and usually 1 road game per year

My best bud in 6th grade (a life long friend) had relatives that worked for the University. He was able to get tickets now and again. I got to a game at the old Fieldhouse and a couple games at Kinnick. From there, I was hooked.

My loyalty was only reinforced seeing the two different camps in High School; the Iowa State fan and the Iowa fans. Pretty clear which one I wanted to be part of and belonged in.

Was born and raised in Illinois and was an Illini fan but when Iowa had the teams in the 50s and won Rose Bowls I was converted. It helped that my best friend in HS later had his son star for the hawks.

I was BORN a HAWKEYE and WILL DIE a HAWKEYE. It didn’t hurt that I grew up close to Kinnick and was going to games (knothole) from a very young age.

Grandma and Grandpa would always watch the games, mainly basketball. My parents were not big sports fans but they got divorced when I was young. Stepdad, good dude but a Fusker at the time, made a big deal about football when I was in grade school. I turned 13 the summer before Ferentz took over, and we were BAD, but I would always ask him "What are the chances Iowa will win this week?" I just always bleed Black and Gold. As a way of building the relationship my step dad has turned full hawk over time and we have gone to a several games, even though I spent over a decade living in Nebby. As others have said, I was just born a Hawk.

My father decided we needed to do more as a family and so he purchased season tickets in 1980 and We went to every home game from eighth grade until I graduated college. I then moved out of state.

i was born a hawk 3rd generation my kids are 4th generation now

My dad told me we were Hawkeyes. And I believed him. Also grew up in western Iowa with a massive hatred for all things Nebby. I was 13 the year Hayden Fry took them to the first Rose Bowl. Watched Rob Houghtlin's kick sail through the uprights when I should have been getting ready for my senior year homecoming dance. It was worth it being late. Loved every minute of college in Iowa City. I will always be a Hawkeye.

Can I ask where? Missouri Valley here. A stone's throw from Omaha.

Basically I listed to the Hawks when I was about 5 or 6 years old on 1040 WHO and 600 AM radio... with my father as a child.. “monkey see monkey do” as my dad was always my best friend growing up.. so it was instant love and everything from there on this wild roller coaster I am still waiting for my childhood dream of undefeated national championship ... we flirted pretty heavily in 2015 but didn’t get the date I hope sometime my dream will come true before my end of days

My now late grandpa, on my mother's side, was born in Iowa, and then moved out of state but came back and went to law school at Iowa and was a Hawkeye fan, along with my father who was born in the Quad Cities, then moved to Durant and later Clinton who was a hawkeye fan. They had season tickets and saw a lot of games together along with my mother and my grandmother. All of them were in Kinnick for 1 vs 2 in '85. My mother and father were off to the side of the endzone Houghtlin was towards and my mother asked my dad, "How will we know if its good?" my dad said, "just watch the band."

I was born in 1987 and when I was coming of age my first game was with both my dad and grandpa to one of Kirk's first games and remember getting a fan that said "I am a Hayden Fry fan." I was enthralled with the whole environment and being an Iowa fan just became the only option.

Since my Grandpa passed, being his only Iowa grandson, my grandmother gave me his personalized Hayden signed football and book. It has become some of my most treasured possessions.

I knew the Gophers were losers so I chose to be a Hawkeye.

[mQUOTE="grayhair81, post: 5491802, member: 8244"]That was my story too. I was a freshman in 81. The Nebraska game was my first college football game. Nuff said[/QUOTE]

I recall this vividly. I recall two things about this. Living outside of Omaha as a kid. My uncle took me to this game. Nebraska came into Iowa ranked 7th in the country. Iowa won 10 to 7 right? I'm going of memory here. I remember the uproar this caused in Omaha. How could Iowa lose to lowly Iowa. There were Nebraska season ticket holders that actually wanted the university to buy their season tickets back! Husker fans were much more arrogant back then. I also remember my folks and and a ton of other families taking me to a football party in Omaha at a hotel to swim (indoors as a kid) and to watch Nebraska play. Iowa got beat badly in the Rose Bowl by Washington (Gordy Bohannon) Jordan's dad was QB. Nebraska got beat in the Orange Bowl if I remember correctly by Clemson.

Grew up 28 miles from IC. Went to school there. For some reason when I was around 10 years old I listened to the Iowa - Ohio BB game on the radio when Don Nelson pretty much played against the Buckeyes by himself. Not sure how i even knew about the game or that it was a BIG game.

Attended my first football game in 1948 (against Northwestern) with Dad a Law graduate in 1931----older brother with us was more interested in pop corn and coke than game so went to Iowa State--I was an undergraduate at Iowa finishing in 1958 and Hawkeye since first game in 1948. Must edit----error reference to 1948 should be 1949---I played tennis at Iowa and learned from Dr. Klotz what an athlete really is

I was born into it. My folks both graduated from the U of I and are big fans of football and wrestling. They used to throw "Herkey's No Turkey!" parties for big games and bowls that they didn't attend. It was so much fun growing up around that....in Hayden's best years in the mid-80s. Those were some magical teams.

Both my parents have undergrad and grad degrees from Iowa and so do. I was born in Iowa city and lived there until I moved after school.

Go Hawks!
