The reason they got Reilly is NOBODY WANTS THAT JOB. Its why they had to settle for Bill C and then Bo. Firing Reilly after one year only underscores the problem with their fan base and they are quickly running out of people to take that job.

Yes, another NE thread (the horror).

For me, the beginning of the end was firing Solich after winning 9 games...the fan base is the program's biggest enemy. Entering the BIG was a reality check, they were the lone big dog in the yard and the rest of the B12 north was pissin on the porch like puppies. I have to say...I had a hunch this would happen, and it's one of the most enjoyable parts of this CFB season.

Osborne's success was double edged. Unbelievable winning % and NCs but it also created (unavoidably so) a spoiled, whiney fanbase with unrealistic expectations.

Yep. And even though they now deny having said and believed it many of their fans crowed about how they were going to dominate the BIG10 when they entered the conference. Its also true that many of them predicted that the Huskers would win the BIG10 West in a walk with Riley at the helm this year.

We have high expectations, and there is nothing wrong with that. Outsiders looking in see us canning a 9 win coach in Solich, but what they don't see is the terrible recruiting and personal issues Solich had going on (think Sarkisian). From there, our ADs have botched the hires terribly. Callahan was awful, and Bo had just too many issues and at the end of the day didn't want to be there. Y'all are correct in saying the fan base can be a big enemy, but it is also an asset. Not sure how smilin Mike will turn out, but he is definitely going to need to pick it up. I guess we will see how his plan unfolds. He needs to have 2 good recruiting classes.

That's the best part...and even before they entered, for years and years, the same fans told us how lucky we were that they weren't in the BIG. It is simply beautiful how it's playing out...

If he is smart, the new AD will hire a Nebraska alum or a coach with a strong Nebraska connection to take over the helm after Riley is canned.

Former AD Peterson started the downfall (or at least accelerated it) IMO by letting Solich go and selling big blue sky with Callahan.
Should have stayed with a coach with Nebraska ties. Callahan, then Pelini, now Riley...... three coaches outside the Nebraska family. Lost identity. Abandoned the Power-I, power run offense for west-coast passing. What happened to the Nebraska walk-on program Devaney started and Osborn maintained? Blackshirt defense - puhleez.

They need to get back to their roots.

You guys realize you're the only team in the country worried about a walk on program right?

Actually there are a lot of things they haven't figured out yet.

-How to play defense
-How to make it through a Football season without being embarrassed multiple times.
-How not to drive a head coach insane.
-How to do math
-How to get back into the AAU
-How much people hate them outside their state
-How not to drool while speaking
-How to find women outside their family for marriage purposes
-How to survive the boredom of driving through their state(I just sedate myself)
-How to bring their minds into the present times, and back into their fat bodies.
-How to think without Football dictating their every thought.
-How to beat Creighton in Basketball
-How to deal with Iowa being a superior school, etc, etc.

Yup, they deny this over and over, and yet they said it over and over when they first joined.

I'd say they have been tamed pretty well in our conference.

I would like the challenge of having unbelievable winning % and NC's and not let it spoil me or cause me to have unrealistic expectations.

Nebraska's walk-on "tradition" is really nothing more than a massive experiment in modern pharmaceuticals. Get those big farm kids on campus, 'roid them up for four years and voila, you've got an All Big-8 player. Devaney and Osborne are two of the biggest frauds in the sport's history, largely because the walk-on "tradition" is a complete farce.

For example: http://articles.latimes.com/1988-09-08/sports/sp-2456_1_bill-lewis

What happened to the Nebraska walk-on program Devaney started and Osborn maintained? .

You can't have a standout walk-on program when no one worth a crap wants to walk on anymore...the days of kids leaving quality scholarship offers on the table to walk-on at Neb are very much dead and gone. So that's what happened to it I guess...

Yet 3-1 vs. Io_a. Yep it is bad, but I guess at the end of the day... Scoreboard.

I understand having/wanting high expectations for your team. The bottomline is Nebraska football will never be dominate again like it was in the 80s, etc. Just like Iowa wrestling will never dominate like it did "back in the day." ... While Iowa wrestling is still one of the top programs in the country, Nebraska football is a "nice - but nothing special"-type of program.

Ridding of Pelini ... and then hiring a Mike Riley was doomed from the very beginning. I specifically remember telling a friend Riley will last two years tops in Lincoln. Having expectations is good ... but unfortunately, the only people who think Nebraska is still this unique football powerhouse ... are Nebraska fans ...

Your "AD's botched the hires terribly" comment tells me that you are, to my point, a Nebby fan that doesn't get it....your AD's soon realized in their search that no one wants to coach there and so they had to settle for not Plan B or Plan C but Plan D or E.

You act like fans make the decision. Yes, our AD's botched the hires. If fans made the decisions, we would not have Bill Callahan or Mike Riley. Bo Pelini might have been hired because of his good graces with the fans after coaching during the bowl game in 2003. You can say what you want, but you have no idea what goes on behind the scenes. Making a comment that no coach wants to come here is laughable. The AD had their target in mind and went after it. Fans of the program now deal with what they are dealt. Maybe you Io_a fans don't get it?

How to put their damn initials in proper order. UN not NU.

I act like the fans made the decision? That makes no sense. Also, you saying Riley was the no.1 target of the AD? lol

Riley was the #1 target of the AD, and I agree with the lol, and would follow it up with a facepalm.
Dude, you are drinkin WAY too much red Kool-Aid....everyone but Nebby fans know Reilly was a fallback hire, just another in a line of em recently for NU.

I think on paper, both the Callahan and Bo hires were OK. BC Trying to convert to a pro-style O. And with the demise of the black shirts, bringing in Bo as one of the hottest DCs in the nation.

But, I do think the fans helped their demise.

Most of that may be true but Iowa is the 16th fattest state and Nebraska is the 21st. This indicates that your Nebraska counterpart in the same percentile is marginally, but measurably, thinner and trimmer than you with a longer life expectancy and better quality of life.

On that note, Nebraska is the 7th happiest state in the country, while Iowa is the 16th. This means that your counterpart in Nebraska, posting on the same bulletin board and in the same percentile of happiness is, generally speaking, a person more satisfied with the quality of his life. He is also better adjusted with somewhat higher income and success at work- along with better employment opportunities.

Nope. That was a poll of the general population. If they polled the husker and Hawk forums- the results would be quite different. ;)

It seems to me that the trends would be magnified on this board. There seems to be a particularly virulent form of acrimony in the rampant schadenfreude in evidence here. That can't be healthy at all.

Ooohhh, big words and an admirable vocabulary from someone trying too hard. Are we the ones who have a suicidal fan base right now?

And Ames has better water than Iowa City. So there's that

Sakes alive! I only hear suicide mentioned on here. Nebraska fans are well adjusted and content. We take the long view and are cognizant of the ebbs and flows of time, college football and the universe at large.

We are also tied for the third best water in the country!!

If everything you had said here was valid, this would be another admirable post from you. You are as far from well adjusted and content as I have seen. Grown men running to get autographs from a team they now execrate, driving a former coach(and some of his staff) to the point of mental exhaustion.

Don't even get me started on the Universe. To you there is Nebraska, and the great beyond(everything else). Your water is placed so high, because you only have a few dozen or so that actually live there. Children of the Corn originated in your state for a reason.

Nubraska's biggest issue is it's fans.

The fans couldn't tolerate Solich after Colorardo.

The fans wanted a "Sexy offense" so they got Callahan.

The fans begged TO for Bo, though he had no HC experience.

Now the fans forced Bo's extraction and now got the anti-Bo in Riley.

Reap what you sow. "Greatest fans in America".
