WHAT ONE TOWN/CITY IN IOWA INFLUENCED YOU THE MOST

Manchester

Even an abundance of extremely douchey middle schoolers in the mid 90s couldn't detract from the best aspects of the place

Ames. But in my defense it’s the only IA town I ever lived in, I was a poor grad student so I didn’t get out much, and I was only in IA for three years.

Why do you find it humorous?
Because it offers almost nothing of a cultural or entertainment value. I would say the same thing about most places in Iowa, including where I live in Ankeny. Ankeny is a great place to live on a day-to-day basis, but it is not the "crown jewel" of Iowa. That title would go to either Des Moines or Iowa City.

For me it's probably Tingley, IA. Also a little shitty town, but it's where my grandparents lived and I spent large parts of my summer there every single year when I was a pre-teen kid fishing with my grandpa and just basically being a kid in the country. Some of my fondest memories occurred in/around that town. It really sucked seeing the pictures of the town after it got hit by a tornado earlier this year. Multiple places I played at as a kid got completely destroyed. That hit harder than I thought it would.

Leon, Iowa. Shithole country. Only spent 2 days there for a trial.

Edit: Don't live in southern Iowa was the influence
I go hunting down there. And yeah you're pretty spot on. I knew a guy who told us how to have sex with sheep. And I'm pretty sure he spoke from experience. (No I never took his advice)

The whole area kind of screams if you're not from around here we don't like you.

Des Moines the crown jewel? Don't make me laugh.

Pella has no cultural value? Do you even hear yourself?

Yes. Having things like the Wells Fargo Center for concerts, the Civic Center for broadway touring companies, the I-Cubs, the Wolves, the Barnstormers, the farmer' market, all of the festivals, and good restaurants tends to go in the plus column. I suppose you would prefer to fill your days with eating dutch letters and looking at tulips.

I know Pella is a well kept and clean town. It's not debatable. What I find humorous is thinking that makes it the crown jewel of Iowa.
Agree, "crown jewel" is a little steep.

Not sure what Iowa town could rightfully claim that honor? What town would you consider quintessential Iowa? I wouldn't consider our largest ones to be that.

Prolly Ames with that top notch water they have

Don't forget the stabbings, gun shots, theft, drugs, assaults, poverty, crappy
schools and poop in the skywalk.

To me, quintessential and crown jewel are two different things. For quintessential, I suppose it matters if you grew up small town or in a city. For small town, I have no idea. For cities, Johnston, Ankeny, Waukee, West Des Moines, Bettendorf, Pleasant Valley, Marion, Cedar Rapids, and I guess even Cedar Falls are all basically interchangeable, so take your pick. For crown jewel I would go with either Des Moines for the reasons stated above, or Iowa City because of all it offers with the university.

So Pella is importing cheap labor from the south? 😉
at least they used to. in the 80's. I drove up there one time and filled out an application, probably like 1986. cool story bro: I also filled one out at the chillicothe power plant, I got beat out by class mate of mine from ottumwa, found out he is still employed there 30+ yrs later.

Also from dirty Osky
since they made the avenue of the saints... there are these youtube guys who do car shows, they fix old cars, etc. or go on power tour which this year was I think in tenn. or kentucky. anyways, they are from like Ames, {junkyard digs} and like minnesota but moved to tenn. { vice grip garage} and they drive south thru iowa headed to st louis or tenn, and they go right thru osky and eddyville but now that road bypasses ottumwa. so I am always watching them drive thru iowa and looking for ottumwa stuff and it never happens cause they are in osky or eddyville instead. Probably Remsen, as that’s where I spent most of my influential years. Although Iowa City tought me there’s much more to the world than small town Iowa and put me on the path of undoing a lot of my biases.
Where I first got drunk. Watching The Rumbles at The Avalon. Good memories.
