What will it take for Iowa to become an Elite program?

You don't think Nick Saban would bring in much better athletes? Look at what the Zooker did at Illinois. That guy was pulling in 4 and 5* athletes. He didn't do much from the coaching side, but he brought in some stellar athletes.

Maybe. The core of recruiting is still our state. The Zooker had the Illinois base to work with. I am not saying that he would not do well, I just question if his record would really be all that much better than KF's over time.

Hahahaha. I would take Nick Saban on a 4 year LSD bender over Kirk in a heartbeat. That guy wins championships, accepts Zero excuses (did you seem him stick to his guns about ripping kiffen) and runs a pretty tight ship.

First, KF is set in stone. So....we need to go out and get some stud DL and DE. Defense wins for Alabama all the time. We do not have an elite pass rush. Hopefully we have some recruits that will fill this bill. But we have to get speed with power at DE, and a couple stud DT's that we can rotate in. MSU has won the last few years with some stud D linemen. It is a must have to win.

If this isn't feasible, here is an off the wall idea to add parity to college football. Teams that finish in the top 10, lose 5 scholarships for the next 2 or 3 years, Teams that finish in the top 10-20 lose 3 scholarships for the next 2 or 3 years. I don't know if these are the right numbers, but find some formula to level out the playing field in college football. Maybe teams like ISU gain 2-3 scholarships, based on losing records.

What championship did he win at MSU?

With all due respect I am not in favor of punishing those who are successful to help those who are not achieving at a high level.

A lot has to do with the coaching staff to start. You gotta be able to recruit blue chip talent. USC is down a little after losing a top notch coach. Oklahoma sucked for a spell until Stoops took over. Nebraska was great until their coach retired. A lot of those great coaches knew how to cheat (USC) or get away with criminal activity for long periods of time. Penn State comes to mind there.

MSU has had some great coaches and they do very well. Iowa is an 8-4 7-5 team for the most part. Our talent won't allow us to do much better. We have some plow horses going against race horses. It takes more time to develop good players than it does to develop 5 star players. That is why Iowa struggles to win over good teams and can't beat real good teams. Last year is a great example. We took care of some good teams but lost against real good teams.

Michigan struggled with some mediocre coaches, Hate to say it but They are back with a top notch coach. Right now Iowa is maybe the third or forth best team in the west. We will struggle against Wisconsin, Michigan and yes Nebraska. I don't see us winning any of those games. We are capable of playing with the rest of the teams but we surely are not a notch above them.

We pay Kirk $4.5 million a year. He isn't going anywhere unless he gets the boot. So you ask what it will take for Iowa to become an elite team. The answer is it ain't happening.

Agreed...cut them across the board to 65. NFL teams play with 53 guys.
That could possibly open up a can of worms to which school has the greatest walk-on program, and what "benefits" those schools offer the walk ons. College football is a step up in developing players. It is not the NFL, who now have a 10 player developmental group on each team.
