What will it take to have our fifth All Big Ten first team guy in five years?

Can it be done? Obviously Bohannon and Cook are the most likely of all the guys to reach that level.

Going for us: If we can be among the top three teams in the league it will be hard not to vote for somebody.

Going against us: We are so dang deep we could be looking at multiple guys on the All Big Ten team.

My thinking, Bohannon has to have an outstanding year and outshine all the other Big Ten point guards.

I agree. The minutes distribution will probably hold someone back unless the player steps forward to be the impact guy. Question is, who might that be? Certainly a guy whose minutes far exceed the others. Bohannon and Cook come to my mind, but you never know if somebody could break out.

Let's just keep in mind how much paladinhawk knows about basketball.

"They can play in a few games (3 maybe???) and still redshirt, correct? So all 3 new recruits could "see floor time" and figure out if they're likely to play regularly, or only get garbage time (like Dailey for the most part this year)." paladinhawk, 4/13/2017

Not much.

dont feed the troll Dan...

Obviouisly a longshot given how young our best players are and the amount of depth we possess noted above. JoBo and Cook would be the contenders.

Here is how last year fared, 3 have graduated from first team. I think 2nd team is very possible.

FIRST TEAM
SECOND TEAM
THIRD TEAM (# additional honorees due to tie )

A lot of those guys are gone, along with the honorable mention list. Cook and Bohannon were on the all freshman list. Will they make the next move up the charts? I say if we finish in the top 3-5, they make it to the 2nd or 3rd teams. Depends on their improvement, and some help from the rest of the team (got to win to get noticed). It'll be interesting to see!

IMO, depth will not hold down a player exhibiting first team potential. If someone is playing that well, he will play a lion's share of the minutes, possibly at multiple positions.

Team success always helps the cause, also. Jordy gets assists when players make their shots. Points per game goes up when you make your shots. A stronger rebounding team should yield one or two more dominant individuals.

This team needs to establish an unquestioned 7-8 player depth and let the rest sort itself out. Obviously, injuries, etc., will mess with the depth, but when has that never happened.

I think Garza has as good of a chance at 1st team Big 10 as any player we have.
Remember, his dad, mom, and grandfather were all high level players and he grew up in that environment . He has been coached and is very skilled and he appears to be highly motivated. He has lots of skills and can move for a 6'11'' man.
Bridges will be the power forward which will knock out Cook and others. Bohannon has lots of good competition at point.
I think I'll take a chance on Garza.

I like your optimisim DHawk, but its really rare for a freshman with no advance billing to be a first teamer. Plus I think at least intially Garza will be in a battle with Kreiner just for minutes. Excellent post though Dan. It will be a challenge to have our first non senior on the first team. If it happens the I'd bett the Hawks go dancing for sure next March! :D

Our 1st teamers have all been seniors. Dom Uhl is our only Senior. End of streak.
Yes, this is the easy answer: no seniors for Iowa = no 1st team all-B1G honorees.

However, this year, Cook could be as good as other 1st-teamers for Iowa have been in the past, and not get awarded that honor because of competition on his own team for minutes. For example, 15/7 for him on this team might equate to 18/9 on past Iowa teams. If this year Iowa challenged for the league crown, 15/7 (as highest team scorer) might get him 1st team accolades. But that is what it will take.

BTW, it would take double figure scoring +7rb for Garza to get freshman 1st team honors (a very tall order as he's got experienced competition on his own team just to get minutes), let alone regular 1st team all-B1G.

Hope you're not turning into one of the weird stalker type posters quoting 3 month old posts....

If Happ, Bridges, Hill, Mason, McIntosh, Edwards, and Murphy don't get hurt, they are likely to be on the top 2 all-B1G teams. Not sure which other players would compete for all B1G, but Wagner (UM), the big soph for MSU, the center for Minny, are a few that come to mind.

I'd take All Big Ten whatever team for several players, as that would be no slap in the face. All conference is all conference.

I think the streak ends this year. Probably the only player who has a remote chance is Tyler Cook. And If Cook did have a season worthy of 1st team all-conference honors, that would likely mean he'd be jumping to the League, which would not be good for Iowa.

My point was that Iowa does not typically recruit one and done type ball players. Our players take some years to build into all big ten type players. Maybe Fran can change that but I'm not seeing any 1st teamers on our squad for this year.

My opinion is bohannon has the best chance of anyone on the roster, but it's certainly a long shot. If the Hawks finish in the top 4 in conference and JBO is averaging 15 and 7 assists it will garner some attention. But I agree with suterman, streak ends this year but good chance it will pick back up the year after.

That's pretty much the thought I have. If the Big Ten is short on anything it is proven top notch point guards. Minnesota's guy is probably the biggest challenge. And he has the edge in seniority. It'll take Bohannon clearly being better than Mason.

Bryant McIntosh will be your first team point guard. Nate Mason and JBo will probably be your #2 and #3 point guards unless I'm forgetting somebody.

Iowa is one of only two teams to boast a first team All-Big Ten honoree each of the last four seasons. #MyTopCollege #Hawkeyes

If Bohannon plays the whole season like he did down the stretch last year, he would easily eclipse McIntosh and Mason. Fortunately for the Hawkeyes, they won't require that level of production out of him to be successful.
