What's everyone's thoughts on when Hayden should have ideally quit / retired?

I've always been of the school of thought that he should have retired after the 1995 Sun Bowl victory over Washington. It's too bad that Hayden's last season had to be 3-8 with the first loss to Iowa State in my lifetime. He also left the talent level extremely low when Kirk took over.

Most coaches hang on for too long and nothing good ever comes of it. I hope Kirk gets to go out right, as he deserves it. I also hope he doesn't try to hang on too long. If Kirk can win the west again I think he should hang it up. I hope he remembers how high Hayden had the program, but how low it was when he took over.

A common mantra is to leave the jersey better than when you got it. I hope Kirk can do that. He has done so much for the program, and deserves to go out in style. A lot of Iowa fans forget how Fry went out, and it wasn't pleasant. I doubt Kirk has forgotten though.
