Austin Grandstaff decided to transfer mid-season.
Daniel Giddens announces his intent to transfer yesterday.
Mickey Mitchell announces his intent to transfer today.
AJ Harris is supposedly going to announce his intent to transfer soon.

They had a top 5 class come in last recruiting cycle and it appears as if only 1 of the 5 players will be back for year 2

Over signing possibly? Maybe Matta is going out and trying to find some new blood. Probably bringing 3-4 transfers and be near the top of the Big Ten.

Maybe Matta is going to be retiring because of his bad back. Who knows. MSU and UM both had two transfer recently.

The Columbus talk shows were surprised by the transfers. Totally unexpected, not forced out by Matta. Had a lot of young guys on the team, maybe they thought they were going to have a free ticket to shoot more and expected more playing time. They had a pretty good second half to the season, but were very inconsistent and had the two injuries, at the end. Actually one of Matta's better coaching jobs in my opinion. Usually he has been lucky enough to recruit All-American players like Odom and Sullinger to carry his teams.
As far as football, they are expected to have at least 14 players drafted this year, which is their record amount for a season. Meyer will have a little coaching to do this year!

Well, I hope ol' Urban is up to the task of "molding" all those 4 and 5 star recruits into something that resembles a DI Football Team.................................

There has been some buzz on the street that Thad Matta
is considering retirement due to physical problems with
his back. He might just walk away from the grind.

AJ Harris makes it official, announces his intent to transfer. Hopefully their football program goes to hell also.
I second this. If top tier kids are transferring in bulk from their basketball program, then they should do so with their football program as well...and not only that, but they should also lose more games too, and not just shrug off those losses and beat everyone bau. Thank you Ohio State for doing that and not just taking it into consideration. True sports, those Buckeyes are.

SOOOOO there are all these transfers, where are the Iowa kids? Are there any from Iowa transferring? Kind of odd you see all these other programs losing kids and Iowa stays the same.

Just let me go on record as saying, I love it that kids don't transfer out of Iowa. I remember when Lick was here, it was like 2-3 kids a year were leaving. It made the program look bad (not that it needed any help). I like that Fran has been able to keep the majority of his recruits.

I don't know that not seeing anything regarding Iowa players yet means there won't be guys moving on, could simply be a timing thing. I really don't have an issue with guys wanting more playing time and deciding the best way to get it is to move on (assuming it's the players choice), the issue with Lick was that his BEST players were continually leaving.

OK, that was only one of many issues with Lick.........

I guess I don't understand the angst over transfers. Lots of other factors like grades, girlfriends, family issues, playing time, not clicking with the coach, so it's not always the terrible coach kicking some pure as the driven snow kid off the team as some on here believe. I also do not believe that no transfers is the sign of a healthy program. I certainly hope that a: players develop and improve while here and b: that Fran is constantly upgrading the talent. If a kid gets recruited over, then that is the competitive nature of sports. Had we not had Meyer and Ingram transfer, we may not have had room for Uthoff or others....not exactly sure of time line. Take a step back and realize lots of kids change colleges who aren't athletes.

Coach Fran is big on team chemistry. He tries to make
the whole team feel welcome and part of something
bigger than the individual player. He and his wife invite
the team over to their home for fellowship and food.

It is true that it's not only athletes who transfer. According to a 2014 NY Times article, "60 percent of bachelor’s degree recipients change colleges, with almost half of them losing some of their credits when they transfer."

That's a pretty big number. The report also says, "At most public universities, only 19 percent of full-time students earn a bachelor’s degree in four years. Even at state flagship universities — selective, research-intensive institutions — only 36 percent of full-time students complete their bachelor’s degree on time."

Here's the link: http://www.nytimes.com/2014/12/02/e...-earn-degree-in-4-years-study-finds.html?_r=0

A transfer or two is no big deal, but when 4 players out of a 5 man recruiting class, all who saw minutes as true freshman, decide to transfer, I have a hard time believing it's coincidence. There has to be something larger going on within the program.

Agree, My response was intended for those who think any transfer is reason to panic and a sign of a bad coach who is Creaning kids. Must be something going on at OSU or Mata has given them the head's up he is retiring.

Exchanged emails with a colleague who is a Buckeye fanatic. His spin is that they return all starters, these guys knew they would return to limited roles, and in some cases, were the source of some drama in the locker room. So while he does not like Matta, he is not hearing retirement rumors or that this is a purge to make way for better talent. He said fans are wondering how they replace that many bodies so late in the game. Would not surprise me to see OSU make a big splash in the grad transfer space.

That's awesome news! Do you think they have deep discussion about how to go about winning games in February?

OSU has 6 of their top players returning next yr. which includes all 5 starters. They picked up Derek Funderburk who they expect will fit into their 7-8 man rotation. OSU lost only 8.6 pts. per game with the players that r transferring. According to Matta he expects them to be better next yr. and doesn't seem to be too concerned about the transfers. It sounds like playing time was the main reason for the players leaving. Not anything about Matta stepping down.

Time to play 'Which OSU transfer lands in Ames?' May have to hold transfer tryouts this year given there are so many choices. Might be a good reality TV show for Transfer U.

Giddens would be the only one I would want and I doubt he will go to ISU

That sounds like a very good summation. I have not heard any rumors in Columbus that Matta is leaving. He gave them their releases and wished them well, so it didn't seem to be a big heartbreak for him. The best one stayed, so it was probably about playing time for the rest.
