And that is within our own species. Then look at how we have treated species on our own planet that are truly intelligent, just slightly less intelligent than us. We've driven them to near extinction, gathered them to exhibit in cages, and used them to perform experiments on.

Now think of a species of aliens advanced enough to travel to Earth. We could put forward our most intelligent human, and they would likely think, "look at cute Stephen Hawking, he can perform advanced quantum physics. He has the intelligence of one of our seven year olds."

The odds that they would treat us as equals are slim. More likely, they would take our resources and treat us like we treat chimps.
