Where this years AAs were ranked in HS

Good info....all in all....I would say the h.s. national rankings are pretty inaccurate.

I looked at the numbers in a slightly different way. About 30 of the 80 wrestlers were rated 75 to NR. 50 were ranked #1-75.
500 ranked wrestlers in the 5 years and 50 were AAs. If you count multiple AA guys then the numbers get worse but I don't want to take the time and I'm not sure I could do the math. Let's say with 1 4-timer that means over the course of time that brings the # of top ranked guys to AA down to 46 from 50, throw in some 2 and 3-timers and you have about 50% of AAs in any year that were ranked in the top 75 rankings coming out of HS.
Look at Ruth and Taylor, by themselves they took the number of top 75 recruits to AA those 4 years to close to 50%.

What all this means is that rating the 5-10 top recruits is easy, but even then you can miss big and you're only rating an average of 1 guy in each weight class per year. This is not an exact science. Every year about 50% of the AAs come from the top 375 ranked guys. This year there was only 18 out of 80 AAs that were ranked in the top 8 out of HS. 20% of the top 8 ranked guys out of HS every year will AA.

All of this means to me that recruiting is an art and coaching is a big part of that art form, I think TNT do a pretty good job of it.

I really want some top 5 kids though, I can't help it!!! When was our last top 5 guy? Stache?

This year 18 guys out of the top 80 guys to AA were ranked in the top 8 out of HS.
This year 13 guys out of the top 80 guys to AA were NOT RANKED AT ALL.

Much like everything else in life, being lucky is a good trait to have (as it relates to recruiting).

All this is great info but I would look at what Iowa does with talent.

Gilman 10
Clark 15
Sorensen 62
Evans 6
Burak NR
Telford 16

So it would seem for Iowa that 80% of AA are top 20 guys. Small sample size but would be interesting to go back and do it for the last 5 to 10 years. It's always great to have guyscome out of nowhere but perhaps we don't need top 10 but instead top 20.

All I know is that IMO the staff needs to lose the lump of coal into a diamond mentality. There is only so much that can be done with some guys because they just don't have the phsyical attributes and athletic ability to move beyond a certain point no matter how dedicated they are. We need to avoid recruits who are incomplete, who can not score in multiple ways. We need more blue chips and our non blue chips need to be guys that when you look at them you think, hey this guy has a shot to do something someday. That has too often not been the case. I do think they are improving but a ways to go.

Look at next years assumed llineup:

Gilman- Was around #10 overall, is quick and strong. Good in all postions. Could be better at turning people and needs to let his shots go and trust his skills.

Clark- Good in all positions, was top 20 overall I think. Quick, good scrambler, great on top. Could use a bit of strength.

Carton- Kind of short, not dominant in any position. Can struggle on bottom and getting in on people. Not great at turning people either. He seems strong ansd goes hard but needs to improve some things to get to the next level.

Ryan- Very quick, pretty well rounded. Could be stronger. Seems to have lapses in matches and lose his edge to easy.

Gross- Needs to be better on his feet, a bit slow footed and ends up with the trick knee situation more than he should. Very good on the mat, needs to get stronger.

Sorensen- Not highly rated overall but is a very well rounded wrestler and very strong. Foot speed and quickness are plenty good enough. Would like to see him turn people more from top and divercify his escapes. If he stunk on bottom or could not ride he would not be near as effective. Must be complete. He needs to work on angles from neutral.

Brody- Was a good all around athlete in HS. The take down game has been his weak point. Good on top, has gotten better on bottom. Needs to be stronger.

165-?

174- Meyer is a big strong 174, he is good on the mat, not bad from neutral but could do better keeping guys off his legs. A pretty complete guy. Can hit the big move too so guys have to be careful against him.

184- Brooks is big and strong. Good on top and bottom, could use more turns. He kind of has slow feet and could be better at his leg shots. Needs to still use his body locks when they are there, just don't forced them. His strength and upper body game should help off set the slower feet. Needs to work on scrambling too.

197- Burak, not the best feet and gets out quicked at times. Very strong and keeps good position. Could be better with turns. Needs to let his shot go more at times. Finishes are better than they were but still can improve.

285- Stoll- He will not be mistaken for Gwiz from neutral. He will need to keep position and not be afraid to use his body locks when there like Brooks. Needs to be stronger! His game will need to be full sized 285 pounder with a mean attitude that is not afraid to throw you on your head. Getting of bottom and being able to keep people down will be critical for his success. He was great at turning people in HS and needs to transfer than to college. Confidence and a bull dog attitude!
