All I keep hearing is how iowa fans outnumbered Stanford 3:1, 4:1, etc., but tv video, tv noise, and airial images sure showed a different narrative. Were there a lot of fans who didn't go to the game itself? Were they wearing red?

From what we could see on tv, it looked like a 60/40 Stanford / IA split, and that's being generous.

You saw it wrong. I was at the game. It was 60/40 Iowa/Stanford, and I'm probably being conservative. There were a shit ton of Iowa fans there.

It looked 55/45 Iowa from TV shots...most shots were towards Stanfords side with a couple sections showing a bunch wearing gold so I'd say there were more Iowa fans

I was at the game, and Iowa clearly had more fans. Black & gold went from goal post around to the other goal post plus at least two additional sections on the Stanford side. My guess at least 60/40 Iowa.

I was there and thought it was 2/3rds Iowa fans. We were in the shade and the black must not of been visible on TV. As for the noise, we had nothing to cheer about the entire game.

There were absolutely zero Stanford fans on the press box side, north end zone and half the south end zone with Iowa fans sprinkled in the Stanford sections. It was easily 3:1.

I think having the Stanford section across from the press box and cameras made it seem like they had more than they really had. In fact, I hated that my photos from my seats have all of that ugly red in the background. Also, I think the Iowa athletic dept should have organized a "be bold, wear gold" initiative. We are proud of our fan support but no organized color scheme hid the amount of fans we had there. While the color schemes may seem lame to some, we have learned in previous years that our fan support has allowed us to be chosen for bowls over other teams. With so many buying tickets on StibHub, etc I like us to show off our good crowd at every opportunity.

You can take tv if you want. I was there and could see it first hand. Way more hawk fans. At least 60/40. You have 5-6 people here that were at the game telling you the same thing.

What happend to 80/20 like everyone was saying. Hawk family just got back ,said biggest waste of $$$$ ever. At least weather was nice but game was a complete and utter disaster.

I know what you are saying the shots on TV made it look like a fairly even split if not slightly more Stanford fans. But that was due to what ESPN wanted to show and the fact Stanford dominated the game. Nobody who actually attended the Rose Bowl has said it was any less than 60 - 40 Iowa.

Bottom line Standord easily outclassed the Hawks on the field but the Cardinal fans have never been able to touch the loyalty and support of the Hawkeye fans.

Saw a photo today that also made it look like it was mostly red. Two hours before game time, it was 80/20 Hawks. In the stadium, it was at least 60/40 Hawks. Maybe more because there was a big section of gold in the middle of Stanfords section.

Iowa is the only program in the country to focus on winning the attendance battle for satisfaction. The scope of the beatdown was slmost incomprehensible on the field. Ramifications in recruiting and prestige will hang for years. It WAS epic in that regard.

There was a graphic displayed on the video board at the game that stated Iowa traveled approximately 1,500 (1,535) miles to the game in Pasadena while Stanford trekked all of 315 miles. Perhaps that had something to do with the turnout.

It was not unusual to hear/know of Iowa fans dealing with weather delays and even some cancellations of travel arrangements. Some flew into Vegas then drove the approximate four hours to SoCal in order to be at the game.

Bottom line, the Iowa fans have nothing at all to be ashamed about regarding the turnout at the Rose Bowl.

That is such a poorly thought out remark that it is comical. There are fan bases from nearly every conference that take pride in how well fans follow their respective team. In fact, many bowl match ups take into account how well the anticipated fan support (attendance) will be when invitations are made to the teams/schools.

As for the "recruiting and prestige", we have heard similar things many time before. As recently as last summer, there were those predicting a much more pedestrian win/loss total for Iowa because they had 'MAC quality recruits' and were not even on the radar of national perception. They were wrong as are you now.

The tailgate and around the stadium was 90/10 or 80/20 iowa - game was probably 60/40 iowa.

Fans at all sorts of schools take pride in fan loyalty. Nerbaska is extremely proud of their sell out streak which is the longest in the nation. SEC schools Ole Miss and South Carolina often thump their chest about fan loyalty during lean years.

Iowa has a fantastic fan base and one we should be proud of. Stanford on the other hand had to reduce the size of their stadium a few years back and still struggle to sell out even with a top of the line product to sell.

One is for sure. All the fans besides children went back home broke or out at least 500 bucks, half drunk, and very pissed off.

Your argument here being that Iowa fans, as a group, are too f%$cking stupid to be able to dress themselves properly without some kind of help from the Iowa athletic department?
Wow, chill out double-deuce. You a bit touchy after the blowout loss? You clearly don't understand my point and I can't imagine anyone concluding that my comment suggested stupidity on the part of Hawkeye fans. Just saying a coordinated effort to best show off our fan support would have been nice instead of "wear black or gold, whatever you want" which was the message from the ath dept. All gold, striped, whatever would have helped to showcase our fan support.

Even the aerial shots of the stadium don't look like Iowa had many more fans than Stanford because the black just sort of faded to the background while the red (and gold) stands out. I agree the university probably should have organized a gold out. I saw several Facebook posts from people (not the university) trying to organize a stripe the Rose bowl campaign and I think that might have done more harm than good in terms of making the fan presence known at the game. It's one of the unique things about Iowa's program that I think we should try to capitalize on and it was a missed opportunity to not have Pasadena and Indy all decked out in gold.

Wait, someone said the trip out to the Rose Bowl was a waste of money just because the team got beat excessively?
Yes numerous people actually. Went expecting a good game , not to see the San Gabriels and drink and Stanford stop trying to score by the 2nd quarter. Could have done that at home.

I was there as well and it was easily 60-40 Iowa in stadium. On my 1.5 mile walk to the stadium it was at least 80-20 Iowa and the tailgating around the stadium was the same. I would say the beer tent was about that too. They ran out of most varieties or beer-again. Iowa fans did show up and were loud to start the game. After first quarter, well you all know!

At halftime I missed the infamous band show as I was getting a fresh beer. As I stumbled to get my money to pay I appologized to the vendor letting him now I was a little shaken by getting out ass kicked. As I gave him a nice tip he laughed and said, you may be getting your ass kicked out on the field but at the beer stands we were easily kicking their ass!!!! Made me laugh.

To be honest when you think about it I think the Pac 12 is the only conference that doesn't make a big deal out of attendance. That is probably due to the fact Pac 12 fans by and large only show up when their team is good. The attendance figures are embarrassing at all but the LA schools. Guess not many big sports fans out west.

Lol at some of the trolls here. Game was disappointing, but the trip was amazing and well worth it. The fact that some trolls think that the only way a trip is worth it is if we win simply don't get what being a lifelong true fan really means, and are probably bandwagoners of whatever team they support, if any at all. I played many years of ball, and coached some at several levels, so I am understand the ups and downs. Our players, coaches, and staff appreciate having the greatest fans in college football. I'm so proud to be a Hawkeye fan, and seeing our players look up to tens of thousands of cheering fans on their way out AFTER being beat so badly meant the world to them... and to us true fans. We understand they are 18-23 year old young men who chose the Black & Gold, worked their asses off, and gave it all they had for their team, school, fans, and themselves. I feel sorry for any fan who doesn't fully get this.

Another fan who was there. It was 60-40 I'd guess. Tailgating is always about 80-20 Hawks. orange Bowl vs GT was the same, if not 90-10 in the parking lot. I think most Stanford fans think tailgating is meeting up for a beer at the hotel bar. Oh well, they kicked our ass on the field.

I think part of the problem with some thinking there was more red was that the shots from the Goodyear Blimp were all from the West shooting toward the sunny side of the stadium thus the red side showed up very bright and the Iowa side was predominantly in the shade and those in black didn't show.
It was at least 60-40 IMHO

Watching on TV, I assumed it was was 99/1 Iowa fans. The only Stanford fans I saw while watching were those around Ed McCsffrey and his wife.

I was at the game. Tunnel 2 (SE part of the stadium) facing the press box). From end zone to end zone it was solid gold & black. We were on the Stanford side I'd guess but it was mostly Hawk fans around us. We went to the parade and it wasn't close at all. I joked with some deputies that they'd have to go help the Stanford folk cause they were seriously out gunned. Bought S Rose Bowl tshirt in downtown Pasadena (day of game) and it was easily 90/10 Iowa. The funniest thing part of the parade was when the Clydesdales went marching by, and a huge throng of Hawk fans stood up and gave a thundering round of applause and we just started laughing and the few Stanford fans around us said" Why are they applauding the horses?" I said we like our beer in Iowa :)

I agree, I was at the game and it was clearly 2/3rds Iowa. The fans were awesome, but obviously the energy was sucked out of the crowd pretty quickly. But people continued to cheer the entire game. Great showing by the Hawkeye fans!

The crappy part of being a Stanford grad is there is only around 6000 undergrads and 20% of those are foreighners who love soccer. With such a small base, especially compared to Cals school size, Stanford does pretty well with attnedance. I would love to go to an iowa game and I'm sure Iowa fans would love tailgaiting in the Eucalyptuses groves in Palo Alto. The trees make it so cars have to spread out some and allows more space for tailgating. Probably not up to par with Iowa though.

I figured there were a good bit more Iowa fans than Stanford fans, but I agree with those who saw more red than black and gold in the aerial shots. I think a lot of that had to do with Iowa fans being in the shadow of the press box. In hindsight, I do think a gold-out would have been more effective in showing the disparity in fan numbers. Was surprised by the aerial views that seemed to favor Stanford fans' turnout.
